I also use my dish cloths until they are thread bare. They last forever! So quite worth it
I started (and then frogged) a garter stitch blanket (like The Cozy Comfort Throw). I used a 5 mm needle, held fingering weight double, cast on 300 sts, and worked an icord edge on the last 3 sts of every row. It was very squishy and cozy!
Another idea for a scrappy blanket could be the 10 stitch blanket. I think Opal yarn would make a very interesting pattern in the few stitches used. Plus you can make the 10 stitch blanket rectangular and add a solid border to finish it. Now I’m wanting to cast one on as I tell you all of this!

I started a Ten Stitch blanket years ago but I frogged it at the end. But the garter stitch blanket sounds so fun and cozy!
I have a drawer full of hand knit cotton dishcloths. I use a fresh one everyday and they always smell nice and look nice. You have a great podcast!

I don't think it's too early to start knitting Christmas yarn. I'm working on a Christmas cowl and then will do matching socks. I'd love to do a blanket like any one of the beautiful ones you've done. Thank you for another great podcast.
Thank you! I started knitting my Christmas yarns into a pillow cover and I don't regret it. That way it will be finished in time for the holidays.
Like stockinette stitch, garter stitch is not an individual stitch: it is the stretchy and corrugated fabric that results when you knit every row. Garter is a much older word than stockinette, going back to the 1300s. It originally referred to a band of fabric tied around the leg to keep stockings up.
I think garter and stockinette stitch both get their names from the making of stockings. Stockinette was the stitch for the leg and foot of the stocking. Garter stitch was used at the top, where garters would hold it up. P.S., really love the anthracite/gray ABO socks!

I do a seed stitch 34 to 40 cast on.I like small ones. 3-5rows of garter. Then 3 stitches of garter at beginning and ending. Seed stitch across, k1,p1; next row purl the knits, knit the purls. I make some rather small and some larger, but I try to make them square. 3-5 rows of garter. I use worsted cotton dish yarn on a size US 6for a tight scrubby, 7 or 8. Whatever you.Ike.

I always use store bought dish cloths until they’re unusable. I think the hand made ones just last longer. But I’ve never known anyone to throw away store-bought after one use.
Hi Anna! In 2022 I made 4 Cozy Comfort Throws. I cast on with what Molly called for. I used 10g minis rather than 20g minis. I think I used 52 colors in each blanket. I went until I felt it was a good length for snuggling under while on the couch watching shows. Eventually I will make another one, this time for me.

Yes...I absolutely wash all my dishcloths! There are disposable ones you can buy, but I haven't noticed them in stores for ages. Our little nearby town has held an oktoberfest every Sept since 1966! It's very family-friendly, and from what a relative from Germany told us, much better than the one in Munich!😊😊😊

The pickle tradition isn't common here but on some Christmas markets you can buy pretty pickle ornaments for the tree. ☺

I started the cozy comfort blanket and got through 1 mini before it went in timeout. I cast on 175 stitches.
And a suggestion for Novembers prompt: clear off the needles / finish up wips (so we can knit all the Christmas stuff in December! Also I have a lot of wips I need to get off my needles lol)
That's a nice prompt but I think I will save it for #finishingfebruary
A garter is a "Strumpfband" and they used to be knit tightly in garter stitch... The origin of purl is probably not so clear, but it does look like little pearl bumps, with the spelling having wandered (as so often!). The Swiss also have different expressions for knitting, like the Austrians, there is a strong sense of right/wrong and doing the "right" thing, so I think that is also part of it! In garter stitch, they call one ridge, so two rows, "Rippli" so you will get the instruction for x number of "Rippli" rather than the double number of rows. They also don't call a row "Reihe", like German, they call it "Nadel", the word for needle, which can also be pretty confusing! I do love the Alpine knitting traditions, though, especially the traveling stitches that are used so much, whether they are Swiss, Austrian or Bavarian...
The Norwegians say needle instead of row too I think. I heard Arne and Carlos saying something like that.

Thank you Carin! How is your Opal Abo knitting going? I consider making a little challenge next year and I am looking for other people who would like to join. I would like to try to knit the whole Abo within the same year. That makes 25 balls of yarn. Crazy? Yes, probably. But colors I don't like sp much I could gift or sell and that would count too.
@@annaknitter I didn't have knit any of the opal abo's from last september and from the march and april I only knit (I think) 2 balls. I don't think I can manage to knit each of the 6 balls every time, I'm not a fast knitter hihihi and I also like to knit with other yarn. But I can try.
Another lovely episode! I missed a lot of the photos, because you were keeping me company while I put the house back together 😁. (we had workmen installing new windows, so there was a lot of moving furniture to give them room to work 😅).

For scrappy projects, to use up my fingering weight scraps, I’m thinking about knitting a temperature scarf. I’ll do it in a tube, and knit one round for the low temp and one for the high temp of each day do that it will be long enough. The colors could be anything, right? You don’t have to use blues for cold temps and reds for warm days.

That sounds like very much fun. You can use every color you want. Especially for garments or accessories I think it’s better to do it this way instead of the traditional color palette.

Some people use paper towels (I think in some places it can also be called kitchen roll) for everything. I don’t even buy paper towels, I just don’t see the need. Maybe this is what people are comparing to when saying knit dishcloths are more reusable. I also use my dishcloths until they fall apart. They get washed often.
According to google the word purl, (as in the purl stitch) comes from the ancient Scots word pirl, which meant 'twist'. The word dates back to the fourteenth century.
Garter stitch was taken from the name for garter bands which were (assumed ) to be knitted and are more elastic than stockinette stitch.

More commonly we call a pen a pen but yes we do also say Biro, although Biro was the name of the inventor, the name just became attached to all ball point pens 🙂
Are you in the UK? I’m in the US and never heard the word Biro, didn’t understand what she was talking about until she held it up. I would call it a ball point pen, or maybe just pen.
Yes I'm in the UK. Biro was the surname of the Hungarian inventor of what we more commonly refer to as the pen nowadays, although sometimes people here do still use the term biro and would know what it was. I suppose its a more old fashioned term. X

Dean Anna as a adopt Münchnerin I have to answer to your comment about octoberfest. First, thé Dirndl a Bavarian will never wear a Dirndl that you describe but a traditional Tracht. i wear mine at church Event and opera. Only 15 year old or Tourist wear the bad Dirndl and it is not well seen. Second do not go to Octoberfest on a Saturday evening but on a weekly afternoon in can be lovely there is a lot of of children in the tent. The mass is one liter ( you can get alcohol frei and Apfel Schorle) I Shared it with my boyfriend also the meal. The back thing it is really expensive. But the atmosphere is unique and you will get it in Kirche weihe fest anywhere ( even if I like it as well more quiet, better food) . I thought exactly with you before living munich And going there. Now I just hate that my lovely city becomes crazy 3 week per year, but going there one afternoon I do not say no . And there is always a lovely catholic mass on the event.
I know that the people who wear cheap dirndl are usually from other parts of Germany where they don't keep this tradition and have no clue. 😅 But it is not only teenagers who wear dresses like that I showed. When I lived in Austria I wore my dirndl for church and special feasts as well. I miss that very much.

Yes it’s a biro. Someone in the comments said it’s the name of the inventor of this kind of pen and it seems like this word is only used in British English and that’s the English we learned in school in Germany.
