Asics Gel-Kayano 30 First Run Review: Two runners try the max-cushioned stability shoe

  • Meet the new Kayano, which is very different to the old Kayano. Asics has overhauled the popular stability shoe by maxing out the stack height and changing the structure of the shoe to deliver stability throughout, rather than using classic techniques like a medial post. Tom and Nick have been out for a first run in the all-new Asics Gel-Kayano 30 to see how it shapes up; here’s how they got on.

    I'm excited to see how it would compare to the Saucony Tempus 2 whenever it drops (I hope it's soon).

    A little disappointing that both the testers are “non-stability-runners”….as someone who does need a stability shoe, I’d like to hear the views of someone else in my boat. If this suits a “non-stability-runner”, does it actually suit a “stability-runner” ?

    • @PaulWilliams-dl4fn
      @PaulWilliams-dl4fn ปีที่แล้ว +3

      And this is the issue. As informed and knowledgeable as the testers may be, they don’t actually require a shoe of this nature and therefore the opinions shared about the function of the shoe have to be considered in that light.

    • @q20a08
      @q20a08 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't disagree, but it must be tough to keep any 'serious stability' testers well employed. There are so few serious stability shoes left, how many different shoes can that guy test before crippling himself ? Not to mention that his stability problems might not match up all that well with ours.

    Worthy update, that price though! You can get the Endorphin Pro 3 in Aus at the moment for AUD270 on older colorways, different shoe but a light, stable, soft, brilliant racing shoe, that you can run all day in - which I literally did at Comrades last month.

    Been thinking between this and the Nimbus. Since the Nimbus is relatively stable overall, I could probably go either way.
    Or maybe the Magnify Nitro 2.

      @@filoIII Seems like an excellent area for K30 reviewers to zoom-in on. These new thick slabs seem to have the potential for "unstable squish" problems. How effective is the K30 design at conquering any such unwanted potential ? Especially, compared to the new thick Nimbus.

  • @supwell
    @supwell ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Nick I hear you on the price but unfortunately $160 USD is square down the middle of the plate these days for a quality cushioned daily trainer. The way the market's moved in the past year it's $140 for a "regular" daily trainer (Peg, Mach, Ride), $160 for a cushioned cruiser (Nimbus, Triumph) or plated daily (Endorphin Speed, Magic Speed). I hope the market cools down but it seems that with more runners coming into the fold and driving up demand (a good thing!) it's unlikely

    I’d go for the Superblast instead. The Superblast is very stable without it being a true stability shoe. It is also lighter. The FF Turbo foam is firm enough and very responsive and can handle faster paces. The Superblast’s price is justified because it can do so many things: recovery, easy pace, tempo, long run, and even race a marathon for non-elite runners.

    • @Fozzee.1970
      @Fozzee.1970 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The Superblast is not actually stable for someone who needs stability. It's ok for neutral runners. I have both need a more stable heel on my left foot.

      Yes, interesting contrast there when you look at the outsoles around the midfoot. K30 goes with the "stay wide", Forever is significantly more trim-waisted.

      Stay tuned. These guys are bound to do the "one on each foot", A-B test for you. One would certainly expect a bit less unstable squish from K30, especially if the magical 4D's are doing anything.

    I think "stability shoes" still get a bad rep from all runners.
    I don't think any one needs to hve pronation issues or if you roll outward to NEED stablity shoes. I think people who don't hae any running form issues could still benefit. Why not use a show that helps keep your feet "on track"...lessening the chances of our feet rolling...
    ...why i also prefer "flats"...working our my body conditioning//stamina v....spending little time thinking about whtat kind of shoe I have on my feet. e.g. if you have bad form...i don't think ANY shoe will magicalyy fix or improve" things....e.g. a sports car with good new hi-perf tires on a car with suspension and engine issues...

    • @supwell
      @supwell ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you need stability? If not then do the nimbus or v4. This will be much more stable than more v4. The more doesn't have any prescriptive stability elements built in (also in my experience the fresh foam in the more feels less responsive than the FF Blast+ Asics uses in their max cushion cruisers)
