Why Bass See RED in the Prespawn! (Pro Tip to Help YOU Catch MORE and BIGGER BASS!)

  • The prespawn can be one of the very best times of year to fish. It allows you to catch bass as they move to spawning areas and typically those fish are the biggest they will be all year. One great debate is why fish eat red baits during this time of year. In this video, I break down what I think the reason is and a bunch of great baits to help you catch more of them. I really hope you like this video. If you have't yet, please SUBSCRIBE!

    this help me remember a trip to Lake Fork 30 yrs ago in the month of June. Everyone I talked to said to throw a red ratl trap, red ratl trap. i bought 6 of them to make the trip cause i figured i would lose some. Well after 2 days of not getting a bite I cut the thing off and let it fall in the lake. The last morning i put on a chome with blue back and caught 13 fish before noon and one even pulled the hock off my bait. Yes red does bring back memories.

    Catching numbers are for spotted bass and small mouth tournaments to get a check also win it. But in a big bass lake tournament at some point you specifically got to go for the big bite instead of numbers.

      Agreed... I fish Hartwell a lot and our SC herring lakes are a different animal. Most youtube videos don't really apply to how to fish them. I do know where some grass is on Hartwell and it always holds fish. But Ive only found 2 spots on the whole damned lake that have grass.

    "I'm a human obviously"🤣 good stuff. I know everybody is looking forward to spring but I am not. There is going to be tremendous pressure when it warms back up. I'm only getting 6 or 7 bites a day right now but I've got the lake to myself and have been able to enjoy the peace and beauty of my fisheries.

    Great video Andrew I think a lot of fisherman are like myself they look to mimic the forage and use a lot of realistic looking colors. I never had much confidence in throwing a color like red. I feel that is why it works,the fish are so pressured and so use to seeing the same color patterns they become harder to catch. Like you you touched on do something different than the norm is what will get you more bites,more bites more fish. I got schooled on this up inN.Y. while I was throwing jigs,and soft plastics "finesse fishing" my buddy schooled me mugging them up on a red hard bait. I have a ton of hard baits not much confidence though trying to get out of my finesse style of fishing it's so tough to do because I do so well. I always start out power fishing but just don't stick with it. Trying to get out of this rut. You are so down to earth. Thanks for the video. Hope you have a great 2021 fishing season👊🎣 God Bless

    I did this last March. It was really cold I wasn't sure why I was going fishing. One and a half hours into throwing red lures, 4 Largemouths and a White Bass were caught. Orange works too. I'm pretty sure it's because they think it's a crawdad. It also helps that the fish just went through a long winter and are about to start spawning when the water warms up so they're eating for two reasons. Using red in the early spring really works.

    I have looked at the pre-spawn period as a time when the juveniles of many species are present in the ecosystem. The young crawdads I find show red shells. Trouts bellies always contain baby crawdads at this time here in the Big Sky.

  • @rainandaprilwillis4980
    @rainandaprilwillis4980 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Crawfish normally comes out during pre-spawn season. It's typically why bass are attracted to it.

  • @danielkinn782
    @danielkinn782 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bass are keyed on Craws in late winter/prespawn because that's when craws are coming out from "hibernation". They are coming out of the rocks, the mud, the thick deep grass lines. They are also molting during the same time. They are going from the browns and green Pumpkin to pinks, oranges and red shades. Both are moving shallow to eat. They are waking up after winter and both are hungry.

    Concerning the jackhammer- I do the same and always look for something different.. But have learned sometimes you need to concede and go with what works.. I Believe the reason why read works so well during pre-Spohn it because crawdads carry a lot of protein and nutrients in them which is very beneficial towards the bass Especially calcium in the shell it’s very good for there bones. also calcium strengthens their body in some kind of way. Calcium really helps the bass get ready to spawn since they get beat up. But that is my theory. let me here yours

    It’s interesting, but red is the first color to loose its color as you go down the water column. As a scuba diver you notice they make nothing in red because it turns to grey once you go down. I would be very interested to see how fish react to grey baits instead of red. A red bug worm thrown in 20’ of water on Rayburn will have zero red color to a human eye. Maybe a red trap in 4’-8’ has a shade of red but it’s going to be mostly grey.

    • @AndrewUpshawFishing

    Calcium for the egg growth is what i've heard. From the shell have not researched it but might make seance. Either that or craws are an easier target in the colder water.

  • @NickWitkowskiFishing
    @NickWitkowskiFishing 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey Mr. Upshaw...I completely agree with you. I've never understood why RED works so well in the pre-spawn either. For over 30 years I've slayed bass on lakes like Lake Washington Banks Lake, Potholes to name a few here in Washington State. The KVD red eyed shad is a far the superior lipless than anything else on the market IMO! Also, why are there way more companies that make RED hardbaits and like zero companies that make RED soft plastic baits? I'm sure there's a few, but I've yet to find any!?! Yamamoto? Strike King? 6th Sense? Zoom? IDK? Maybe I'm blind? I can just imagine how well a pegged Texas rigged red craw, or a wacky rigged 3" or 4" RED Senko tied on around 4" up from a dropshot wt. could work bed fishin in late spring even!?! Greater vid brother! 👊👍🤙

    • @AndrewUpshawFishing
      @AndrewUpshawFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks a lot buddy. To answer your question, a lot of companies offer red soft plastics, you just have to dig a little. Zoom, Strike King, Gene Larew, Big Bite all offer red and some pretty good ones. And reeling soft baits work really well too.0

    Andrew I have a couple questions for you who knows maybe more. Anyway here we go. When I comes to Chatter Baits have you thrown the Googan Squad Chatter Bait? Also would you throw any of the baits that you showed on spinning gear? And if you would what line size, what action on the rod? I know this is hitting a lot of areas but one last question for you and I will try to quit thinking of them to ask you. Now if you have fished places like Lake Tarpon in Florida or Lake Seminole in Largo Florida what would be you hands down go to bait for these lakes. The reason that I ask is I am a Tennessee Boy moved down here and dang if I’m not having a rough time with these picky Florida Bass. And lastly thank you for a great video I learned a ton from it, and I am really glad that you are a Lews man as well. Take care, stay safe, and tight lines brother.

    • @AndrewUpshawFishing
      @AndrewUpshawFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, I’ll do my best to answer. 1) I have not used the Googan baits chatter bait. I’ve seen it in stores. But just haven’t thrown it. 2) I would and do throw Shad raps and flat side balsa baits on spinning rods. The flat side I throw on braid/flouro 10lb/10lb and on the Shad Rap I throw 10lb braid to 6-8lb fluorocarbon. 3) best rod size and action for those are a simple 7 foot medium action spinning rod. 4) baits for Florida, where you mentioned. First off, you can’t go wrong with a lipless crankbait, if the grass is shallow. Go to a 1/4. If it’s just too thick, make it more simple. Get you a 5” Ocho in black/blue or June bug and Texas rig it, weightless, and fish slow. You will catch some with it. Tight lines buddy!

    This is a great video Andrew, I'm digging your channel man I just subscribed today! You're definitely spot on about bass loving red in the spring.........they love it in the fall too shhh! But to your point about everybody throwing the popular bait and trying to set yourself apart, I throw red in the early spring just like everybody else because they eat it so well, but a few weeks into the pre spawn I'll switch to Orange and a few other loud colors because everybody is throwing red and they seem to get a little conditioned to it. Of course this is just a theory of mine and bass are gonna do whatever they wanna do regardless of what we think about it lol, but I seem to have some success with it from time to time. If you have any thoughts on this please let me know. I'm always trying to elevate my game and I'll definitely be watching more of your videos!

    Well how i look at it for some doesn't have lot money or just want break into fishing. Strike king, cordell, og rattle trap are cheaper than lucky carft 500, jackall tn, mega bass vibration-x. You can pick up 2 or 3 more for price of one. Easer build your inventory up on qty of each color. Unless you have money drop go head buy bill, cordell, strike king, 6th sense, mega bass, jackall, lucky craft, duo, livetarget get 3 different red and 3 different shad/minnow color and 3 of each going run $1800-2000 easy lol.
    What your favorite rod size, power and action using lipless, flatside, bladed jig, deep crank, shallow crank? Do you use same rod for different baits?

      @AndrewUpshawFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use the same rod for lipless, Spinnerbait, Thunder cricket, Squarebill. It’s a Custom Pro Magnum Hammer by Lew’s. The Magnum Hammer comes in a few cheaper rod models too. But it’s a great all around rod.

    Hey Andrew what trailer(color/style) do you like to put on a red vibrating jig? Good video!

  • @hehasfallen74
    @hehasfallen74 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Crayfish are red in the spring because they've been buried in the mud/clay for the winter, and because of this, they have absorbed a lot of the iron oxide that is in the iron rich clay. As the season warms up, they are less buried in the mud/clay and start to return to their "natural" green pumpkin state. Hope this helps.

      Fish a red eye, 3/4 ounce, delta red. Fish it extremely slow near the bottom on shell beds. Also a red flat side crankbait is killer too!

  • @adamcawthon
    @adamcawthon 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you're throwing a red Thumdrr Cricket or Jackhammer in red, do you try to keep it close to the bottom, or does it matter?

    • @AndrewUpshawFishing
      @AndrewUpshawFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don’t think you have to keep it close to the bottom to throw red. I think it’s more about figuring out what kind of cover the fish are in and fish it effectively.
