  • After spending some time in Taipei, Taiwan it didn't take us long to find a favorite restaurant in the city specializing in Taiwanese soup dumplings known locally as xiao long bao 小笼包 - 小籠包. Heading to the original Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐 - 鼎泰丰) we placed an order for Xiaolongbao along with various other Taiwanese dishes that caught our eye. Below is the complete list of what we had for our meal:
Xiaolongbao or Xiao long bao (小笼包 - 小籠包) = Taiwanese soup dumplings
Oolong Tea (烏龍茶 - 乌龙茶) = Free tea with our meal
Noodles in peanut and sesame spicy sauce - (擔擔麵)
    Taro Xiaolongbao for dessert (芋泥小包)
Lo mai gai sticky rice in lotus leaf wrapper with pork (糯米雞 - 糯米鸡)

Taiwanese Food (Xiao Long Bao - 小籠包): Eating soup dumplings at Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐) in Taipei, Taiwan Travel Video Transcript:
Hello again from Taipei (臺北市). Today we're on a bit of a food mission. We've been hearing about Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐 - 鼎泰丰). Apparently, they specialize in soup dumplings. So that is what we're going to try today.
This is the look of excitement. So the star of the meal has arrived. The Xiaolongbao (小笼包 - 小籠包) is here on the table in real life. And this is cool. So you eat it with a special sauce and they actually give you instructions on how it is done.
So here in the restaurant they actually give you a guide how to enjoy Xiao long bao (小笼包 - 小籠包). This is how you eat it. Um, and they basically explain how to prepare the sauce so we're going to try our hand at this. The waiter actually wanted to make it for us and we're like no. We are filming this. Haha.
    So allow me to demonstrate.
Okay so first up we have our little plate with ginger right here. So it says put some soy sauce and vinegar. So it is one part soy sauce. One part soy sauce. And three parts vinegar. I'd say that is about the right vinegar.
Next up we grab our little Xiaolongbao (小笼包 - 小籠包) and dip it into the sauce. Once it has been dipped we place it on the spoon. Let us see what is next. Oh, let's not forget you have to poke a little hole to let out the soupy broth that is hiding in there. Can you see that. Oh my gosh. Oh wow look at it seeping out. Pouring out.
Alright, so the Xiaolongbao (小笼包 - 小籠包) is amazing but we did order more food so we have to move on. We did.
So we've moving on to noodles that are in a peanut and a spicy sauce (擔擔麵). So yeah. Yeah, peanut and sesame. Yeah, it has got sesame. That look so good. So I'm just going to give it a real good mix here.
Yeah, just basically trying to soak up all of the noodles in the sauce. Alright. I love peanut sauce. Me too. So I'm super excited. I'm really excited for this one I have to admit.
Okay, time to move on to the third dish. Yeah, so we've got sticky rice wrapped with pork (糯米雞 - 糯米鸡). So what I'm going to do is just try to dissect that to see. Oh, look at that. You can see the pork right there. Oh my.
Oh, look at those colors. Turn it back around. Show us that baby. It is so sticky. There we go. Look at that. Look at those colors.
So I'm going to go in for the pork and obviously the sticky rice (糯米雞 - 糯米鸡). That pork looks so juicy.
We finished every last morsel of our mains so now we're moving on to dessert.
Yeah, so we're trying Taro Xiaolongbao (小笼包 - 小籠包). Yeah.
Going back to the Xiao Long Bao (小笼包 - 小籠包). Okay, that is the star of this restaurant.
I can't wait to try this. I bet it is going to be amazing.
    Mmmm.
Lasting impressions of Din Tai Fung (鼎泰豐 - 鼎泰丰). Oh, this place was fantastic. Not only was the food really good but the service was very attentive.
So in terms of the price point looking here it is five hundred and twenty eight Taiwan dollars which is sixteen dollars and fifty cents US.
So you're looking at roughly eight dollars per person and that was for four different things and unlimited tea. And it includes the service charge. Yeah.
So I mean that. How can you get better value than that?
I mean we're leaving full. We're leaving satisfied and it also didn't cost a fortune either so highly recommend this place. I know for a fact we'll be back again before leave Taipei.
This is part of our Travel in Taiwan video series showcasing Taiwanese food, Taiwanese culture and Taiwanese cuisine.

Dumplings must be my favourite comfort food. It began with my MOM who would do dumplings whenever the weather got cold. Her Mom taught her to make them when making a thick stew. Each little delicious morsel is handmade with different fillings and dropped into the stew on low simmer. Often we would lob home from school to find the kitchen filled with this rich aroma emanating from the area when the old wood burning stove would have the large iron pot simmering. I'll tell you that we all had multiple helpings but with the warning to ," Not eat just the dumplings. Leave some for the others." " Yes , Mom.", (pinching one more.)

What a great story Steven! LOL, leaving some for others might be an issue for us as well ;) I think it is great how most cultures have some variation of dumplings and that they're considered comfort food :)

That sticky rice is usually wrapped in bamboo leaves to diamond shaped, boil in hot water till rice is cooked, or lotus leave to shape rice/filling to square and steamed. So, it’s called Taiwanese Rice Tamale of Mexican tamale version.

It is NOT Taiwanese origin. It is the famous food from city of Jiaxing in Zhejiang province of China. If you buy the Taiwanese styled ones, you will not get the same kind in DTF. DTF is a Shanghainese styled restaurant in Taiwan, NOT a Taiwanese styled restaurant. The food served there can be generally found in Shanghai and the two nearby provinces (Jiangsu and Zhejiang). When Old President Chiang went to Taiwan, he brought his hometown food as well. Therefore, DTF and many Shanghai styled restaurants in Taiwan.

Awesome! As far as the cold noodles, this is one of my favorite recipes, and it takes ten minutes to prepare. Boil spaghetti (one minute less than the package advises) and cool them in cold water, make sauce: peanut butter, soy sauce, hot pepper oil (or just pepper and water) and sugar. First, make smooth sauce with a fork, and you could use cold water to achieve mayo consistency. And then toss the pasta with the sauce. As the dish is cold, it could be eaten several times, and could keep in a fridge. Now, if you are decadent, use cashew butter instead of peanut butter. instead of Chinese hot oil, you could also use Sam & Audrey's favorite thing in the world, which is a Korean hot sauce paste.

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Wow! We're really going to have to try that someday at home. I think it would taste amazing with those two substitutes you suggested (cashew butter and Korean gochujang) :)

    • @MatthewMaly1
      @MatthewMaly1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

You are lucky because you are in noodle heaven. But the key is to make noodles really al dente, not soft, so you can bite and chew. It is too tasty to just swallow -- what a waste of product! And you could add some chopped scallion (not a lot).
      A xiao long bao story
I was born and raised in Moscow, Russia. We lived in the very center, right next to the restaurant named Peking (Beijing) that was opened in Moscow on direct orders of Chairman Mao. It was in a grand building, it was a huge restaurant obviously manned by the best chefs China had.
Thus, it was THE ONLY Chinese restaurant in the Soviet Union (because there was nothing private, no unapproved restaurants, and no Chinese citizens living in the USSR outside of the Chinese Embassy).
As the restaurant was authentic, it was absolutely empty as people could not eat there. It had ginger (a root so pungent it could kill you) soy sauce (a horrible brown salty liquid cleary unfit for human consumption), and they also served sea cucumber!
At that time, Moscow did not have great food choices, but there was a lot of black caviar. The Soviet ad at the time said. "Force yourself to eat black caviar: it is very good for your health". My grandmother was running after me trying to force-feed me some caviar, but I was faster and more agile than her... I never ate it because I thought it was yet another type of cod liver oil. Another food that was everywhere and that nobody would touch: Kamchatka King crabs. They cost virtually nothing, and still people would not touch them. Funny how life is.
So, the Peking restaurant stood there empty. And they introduced a takeout. Takeout is when you order, they cook, and then they put the food in a box and you could bring it home. Obviously, it was the only restaurant in the Soviet Union that offered the cooked food takeout Another famous restaurant, Prague, was allowed to sell its cakes as takeout, but that was it. I believe this privilege was granted to Prague personally by Khrushchev.
So, my mom went to Peking and got six dumplings as a takeout. These were xiao long bao. They smelled from ten feet away. I believe I got ONE dumpling because my grandmother believed it could kill me with that ginger and soy sauce and who knows what else. (And the secret ingredients were sesame oil in the filling and the wonderful aspic they made). Anyway, after I ate this one dumpling, I knew I did not want to live in the Soviet Union. I dedicated my life to the search of the xiao long bao smell.
Thirteen year later, I ended up in New York City. The year was 1980. In New York City at the time, there was no bread (with crust and smell), no honey, no cheese, sausage, tomatoes, cucumbers, or eggs. Eggs are supposed to have yellow yolk, not off-white one) The first real tomato appeared in Dean & Deluca (a very expensive gourmet store) in 1984. It cost $3.49 a pound. Plastic tomatoes cost like $0.59 a pound. I could not afford to buy that tomato, so I smelled it.
Also Dean&DeLuca had ONE Italian salami, sopressata. I eventually got to try that marvel because I had a very rich girlfriend at the time. Now, you could have xiao long bao in New York City. Not when I lived there, 1980-92. Times have changed.

The leaf wrapped pork is NOT Cantonese 糯米鸡 (sweet rice chicken). It is the Zhejiang province Jiaxing city's Famous food Pork Zongzi (leaf wrapped sweet rice with pork). DTF food is traditional food from Jiangsu and Zhejiang region (including Shanghai) with a little bit of Taiwanese mix (like Toro Bao, etc.) and a little additions from the now popular Sichuan dishes like the chilli pepper wonton and the dandan noodles shown in this video.
And Zongzi is a traditional Chinese leaf wrapped sweet rice food for the proper Summer Festival day (端午节).

Then you go on to the sticky rice with pork that looks so succulent. You also have the desert dumplings.
I have to add that I also appreciate the Taiwanese women featured in the video. While I like blondes I also have Yellow Fever. The girl with the short shorts showing her legs really added value to this video. ;-)

The soup inside can keep the heat very long time, so be careful. In the worst case, the hot liquid can kill a person.
