  • Come join us for dim sum in Hong Kong as we revisit our favorite restaurant Tim Ho Wan (添好運). This Michelin star restaurant is one the best bets to grab dim sum (点心 - 點心) in Hong Kong for those on a budget. We end up ordering seven different dim sum dishes along with unlimited tea.
    1) Lo Mai Gai 'pearl chicken' sticky rice in a lotus leaf wrapper (糯米雞 - 珍珠雞)
    2) Har Gow shrimp dumplings (蝦餃 - 虾饺)
    3) Rice Noodle Roll 'Chee cheong fun' (豬腸粉 - 猪肠粉)
    4) Lo Bak Gou - Pan fried turnip cake (教做蘿蔔糕)
    5) Baked Barbecue Pork Bun 'Cha siu bao' (叉烧包 - 叉燒包)
    6) Steamed egg cake or Malay cake 'Ji Dan Gao' (鸡蛋糕)
    7) Tonic Medlar and Petal Cake
Below you'll find the address for Tim Ho Wan:
Olympian City 2, 18 Hoi Ting Rd, West Kowloon, Hong Kong

Dim Sum in Hong Kong at Tim Ho Wan (添好運) Travel Food Video Transcript:
    Food! We're going for food.
It is a bit of a strange entrance, I know. It is like we're going behind the scenes in the mall but it is this way. Food Garden.
Alright guys we have three words for you! Tim Ho Wan (添好運)! Tell us all about it. What is this place?
This is basically one of the best places to try dim sum (点心 - 點心) in all of Hong Kong. Yes. It is a Michelin starred restaurant yet it is affordable. So we're going to go in, we're going to order a lot of food and we're just going to scarf down some dim sum (點心 - 点心).
And we've been here before many years ago. We sound so old saying that we've been here before. But the food is so so good and we're super excited to be back.
Alright guys so we just finished placing our order. And this is what the menu looks like. You basically grab a pencil and you tick off the different dishes you're interested in. The first one has already arrived. Oh wow. So we got a little bit greedy because it is like three in the afternoon. We haven't had lunch yet so we ordered seven different dishes and we're going to be showing you those once they arrive. First one is here and this one is the sticky rice wrapped in a lotus leaf (Lo mai gai - 糯米雞 - 珍珠雞). This is one of our favorite ones. I love this one. So let's not waste any time. Let's just start unfolding this masterpiece.
Wow. Lots of steam rising. Ooh! Look at that. It is a huge leaf. It is a huge one. And there you've got the sticky rice with chicken I believe and a nice mushroom. So we're going to be sharing this. We'll be back in a second.
The food is arriving so quickly here we haven't even touched the rice yet. And Sam's barbecue pork buns are here. The baked barbecue pork buns are already here. So our table is filling up we better start chowing down.
Alright so I'm just going to serve it right in to my bowl. Um, I'll go for the mushrooms a bit later. Oh there is more. There is more turnip cake. Oh my gosh. We'll get to that.
    Mmmm. Wow.
So good. Well what do you think? I love it. He loves it. And there is more food. Oh my gosh.
The funny thing is we literally sat down like ten minutes ago and the food has already arrived. Hey, they must have somehow known we were coming. Yeah. Super fast service. They can read our minds. So yeah, anyways that rice is just so good. So sticky and I just love the has a lot of flavor. And you can taste the meat. The meat is really chewy. It is very aromatic. Very aromatic. Once you unwrap it you get this nice whiff of like food smells. So much better than just normal rice. It is just so good.
So yeah, in terms of price point that was a 146 Hong Kong dollars which was $18 dollars total. Nine dollars per person. Really good value considering like we had seven things. Seven things. Seven dishes and tea. Unlimited tea. And we are stuffed. We are so stuffed. So so stuffed. So if you're having Dim Sum (点心 - 點心) for the first time my biggest suggestion would just be to order confidently. Just order a whole bunch of different things and find out what it is you like because this is such an awesome meal.
This is part of our Travel in Hong Kong video series showcasing Hong Kong food, Hong Kong culture and Hong Kong cuisine.

I think Dim Sum is one of the most sophisticated cuisines in the world. As you may not know, the chefs need to go back to the restaurant at 3am to start the preparation work every day. And don't underestimate how many steps there are to make these little cute dim sums. Lets take the rice roll as an example, each ingredient needs to be handled separately at first which might take at least 3 hours, then mixed together and wrapped over, and finally get steamed. If they only start making it after you order, you might have to wait for 5 hours or even longer. It only takes you a minute to finish it, but it takes half a day to prepare it. There is a say in Cantonese "It might only take you 10 minutes to watch the show on stage, but it actually took the performers 10 years to practice in the backstage", which means don't superficially judge anything on its outside, it might take much longer to accomplish than you expect.

I just learned how to make the turnip cake at home and I was told that the texture depends on the ratio of turnip/radish to rice flour; good turnip cake is more vegetable than flour which gives it a nicer texture and less nice turnip cake is chewer because it has a greater ratio of flour. That turnip cake is probably on the better end if it's a nicer texture!

The square rice cakes are called 'carrot cake' in Malaysia and Singapore, where I'm from. Audrey, you are right, it is the same thing. The Cantonese (Tim sum) version sometimes has bits of Chinese pork sausage in it, whereas the Hokkien (Fujian) version of it in Malaysia and Singapore is plain rice cakes, roughly chopped up and fried with egg and chives ('white' version of carrot) or with a thick, sweet, dark soy sauce, preserved chopped turnip and chives ('black' version of carrot cake).

    • @samuelandaudrey

Great video and strong descriptions of the dim sum! One thing...eating sticky rice first is a rookie mistake. Rice expands inside you and fills you up. It's the equivalent of eating a ton of bread in an Italian restaurant. I can't really hold anyone accountable as it was tempting you like Pandora's box of dim sum goodness.

7:45 It IS carrot cake, except that the south east Asian version is jazzed up with more seasoning and ingredients. And you're right... there is "no carrot" in carrot cake. It's turnip/ raddish, which is carrot in Chinese. The orange carrot is foreign to China.

it's a turnip cake...turnip and carrot are different in Chinese..they don't call this a carrot cake in Hong Kong, probably only in Malaysia do they call it carrot cake

They're both A+ restaurants in our opinion. Actually they have a Tim Ho Wan in Taipei as well and on a couple of days we visited both Din Tai Fung and Tim Ho Wan on the same day. Those we AWESOME food days...haha

2nd and have a happy, healthy & prosperous 2017 to you. R U currently back in HK from Thailand? I wonder how does it compare to Kirin's here in Vanc? Have U ever been there?

    • @samuelandaudrey
      @samuelandaudrey  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Happy New Year! Actually we filmed this several weeks ago. We're behind on our content. We've never tried Kirin's but thanks for recommending it. I haven't been back to Vancouver since 2007 and Audrey has never visited. We're going to do a trip there either later this year or early next year.

Wow, here I thought you were a B.C. native. Vanc. had the best of times at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the worst at the 2011 Stanley Cup finals. Hard to imagine it was the same city.

Unfortunately my parents moved to Fredericton back in 2002 so that is why I don't visit as much. I really miss it though. Ah yeah, I was watching them win Gold in Buenos Aires back in 2010 :) I'm a Hawks fan so the Bruins beating the Canucks didn't sting as much as it did for my friends on VI.

Samuel comment of "normal rice" is inaccurate -- it called Plain Rice. Sam said "Dimsum addict!" then cut to a waitress passing by him. Sam said "That's ridiculous." at the same time a waitress enter the frame behind him.
Audrey's comment of "sketchy" about the alley was unfair -- it's well lit and clean.

Fun Fact: Carrot cake is actually the same thing as Turnip cake.. its just called carrot cake in Malaysia and i honestly dont know why.

    • @KHobbies_cina
      @KHobbies_cina 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Christopher Keroro allow me to explain, the word used for carrot and radish/white carrot is the same for malay/chinese . So when we mention " carrot" cake, its actually white radish, hence the white colour. And its made with rice flour as well.
