  • We went to Din Tai Fung for, perhaps, the best dumpling experience of our lives. Xiaolongbao, aka soup dumplings, are dumplings in their perfected form. They can't get any better. We'll show you how to eat them in this week's Food Adventure Program For Awesome People!

    You guys are a prime example of cultural appreciation rather than appropriation. It's really refreshing. You guys have great personalities and it's cool how open you guys are to new experiences.

      Beary the Bear lol what? The disrespect of other peoples lives and culture is so insignificant to you that you'd put someone down for bringing it up? Assuming you've never had to deal with appropriation, it gets VERY tiresome after experiencing it for a while, and most of the time it borders on racist. So, I'm sorry that you've been made uncomfortable by a topic that is still an ongoing issue for many cultures (because it's not like members of the appropriated culture are more rightfully and justifiably uncomfortable or anything...) But it makes YOU cringe, so I guess we'll just have to deal with it, right? :/
      It's like saying "the concept of cancer makes me cringe, never speak of it." (obviously not to that extreme but it has the same underlying connotations).

      @@bearythebear69 Please never use the word " retarded " in that respect, ever again. It doesn't just make me cringe, it physically enrages me to see other people in the modern world, using an outdated term that heavily insults the mental capacity of others. Never. Never come to an adult conversation, and throw around outdated insults, talking about current events/topics/concerns. Cultural appropriation, exists. for real I cannot watch most of the SImon & Martina's food & FAPFAP videos without eating something similar to what they are eating....but in this case I have to eat my xiao long bao along with them otherwise you instantly regret it. That and I definitely follow the rule of having those chinese soup spoons and poking the whole of each on otherwise it hurts like a mother because you burn the roof of your mouth & tongue and then lose like 50% of your taste buds which is a damn shame for such a delicious dish.

    Wanna know something weird that I miss from traveling in Asia? Sharing food with strangers. It happened a few times but one of the most memorable was when I was in Bangkok and I was sitting at this huge long table and the couple sitting near me saw me staring jealously at their fried fish cakes and they just gave me some. Just passed one right over and smiled! We attempted conversation as best we could, I shared the cucumber sauce that had come with my (already finished) crab cakes and gave them one of my black pepper prawns, and they showed me where their favorite places to eat were. This happened so many times too! I miss that friendly hospitality of the people I met while I was traveling.
    Some other foods I shared with strangers: curry, dumplings, some street food dessert thing I'll never know the name of, crickets (seriously), sesame candies, and a container of fried quail eggs

    You guys still need to go to the original xiao long bao restaurant in Yuyuan garden in Shanghai. Those xiao long bao are the OG of xiao long bao and they’re best enjoyed with Chinese black vinegar and maybe a dash of soy sauce and a bit of ginger if liking ginger. I’ve never been to a Din Tai Fung myself but considering it’s a chain restaurant I’d probably dare to say it’s the McDonald’s of dumplings. Nothing wrong with the taste and quality most likely and I’d still love to go to a DTF as I love dumplings, but the fact remains it’s a chain and not a small mom and pop shop. And I like McDonald’s as well, so there’s that lol Even though the local little privately owned burger and hotdog joint is by far superior when it comes to burger menus. Same price range as McDonald’s but the burgers at the small place are just to die for! It’s so crazy good and they even use brioche buns which hardly ever happens here unless going to some very fancy place that charges overprice for fast food dishes

    Did anyone see that Ginger fly off of Martina's Dumpling?

  • @Nannerchan
    @Nannerchan 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have a DinTai Fung here in Orange County California and it is amazing. I did a short video on the dumpling preparation. I think that the menu may be slightly different but it is the same cuisine. My husband, who is from Japan says that there are a lot of great chefs in Taiwan because all of the talent fled to there after the Chinese Revolution. Din Tai Fung is always crowded, partially because of the food and partly because South Coast Plaza gets a lot of Chinese visitors doing a lot of last minute shopping. Before that, mom and kids go to Disneyland and dad goes to Vegas to play some Pai Gow.

    You don't need to poke a hole in the bao just wait a little while for it to chill and all the soup exploding in your mouth when you take your first bite is much more satisfying then poking it.

      Lee Deltronsbet Not knocking Taiwan or anything, but I live in Singapore, which is also a country in Asia and I feel that transport, education and safety is a lot better in Singapore... 🙂 Taiwan has better food though, but there's a great variety of food in Singapore too, from Chinese to Malay to Indian cuisine and more.

    In mongolia, we also have many types of dumplings. But dumplings we have are much different than other asian dumplings. To make dumpling with soup in it, we add water into the meat when seasoning and mixing the meat. So meat is usually very juicy due to water being added and when it is steamed that water boils and soup is made inside dumpling.

    • @PandaBaby51
      @PandaBaby51 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! I'd like to visit Mongolia someday. Do you use lamb meat?

    • @Fnatic2010
      @Fnatic2010 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      PandaBaby51 Not lamb meat but mutton aka Old sheep meat. The reason is that we are nomads and our livelihood depends on our livestocks. We get milk, meat, wool, cashmere, leather from them in other word we get everything from them. So for us consuming young animal is impossible. We would rather get few years worth of milk and wool than eating tender meat.
      But also mutton tasted different than lamb, you know. Also we eat beef and in very rare case, horse meat. In gobi desert people very rarely consume camel meat. So you can say we only eat mutton and beef. There is nothing exotic about our cuisine :3 we even don't eat fish that much. Most nomads have eaten fish handful of times in ones lifetime, i guess, considering we have numerous rivers with plenty of fishes in them yet people don't care about them. Only exotic one I can think of is marmot meat which has been delicacy for people of eurasian high plateau for centuries. Though nowadays we came across marmot meat then once every few year since government has enacted ban on hunting them.

    I'm Chinese and I've been eating these since I could remember, and I eat them with chopsticks and a spoon BUT instead of breaking it open on the spoon, I eat it by biting a small hole and then sipping it from there(also sometimes a spoon to catch any leaking soup) while then dipping a part of it in the soy sauce/vinegar. It's a bit more enjoyable that way too tbh^-^ ALSO totally recommend the GIANT ones that come with a huge straw right in the middle. They're amazing!

    • @kat7020
      @kat7020 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      was it bad that they ripped a hole in the bottom to drink the broth or?

    • @Courroxxi879
      @Courroxxi879 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Kat Deras it is because your suppose bit the top of the dumpling first then drink broth then finish the entire dumpling afterwards.

    • @adbreon
      @adbreon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +Kat Deras there is nothing wrong with the way they do it. There are a lot of people who get nit picky but to be honest, at least 30% of the people in the restaurant are eating the same way. The people who insist on nibbling the top usually do so because they like to put some of the sauce or vinegar inside the dumpling.
