  • How To STOP Your Puppy From Biting You. This video will tell you how to stop puppy nipping and biting. Getting this sorted when a dog is young is important as it does become harder to deal with the older the dog is so putting in the training now will help as your puppy grows up.

    Perfect timing for me.
    Except my puppy is 2 1/2 stray who was feral for a while.
    01:50 - Correct (strong verbal)
    03:45 - Redirect (chew something appropriate)
    04:25 - Reinforce (good puppy!)
    Thanks.

    We just got a Bernese Mountain Dog puppy a week ago and my 4 year old daughter wouldn’t even be in the same room with the puppy without being perched on a sofa out of reach or having me pick up the puppy so it couldn’t “eat” her. I wasn’t sure an 8 week old puppy could take to training, but after about 15-20 minutes of using the techniques in this video, the nipping is almost completely gone. My daughter is finally comfortable walking around the house with the puppy around her. I’m so glad I found your video. Some of the others I saw promoted much more violent methods and I just don’t think violence can ever be part of a loving, trusting relationship. With humans or canines. Thank you for making our home a happy one once again!

    I actually saw the puppy biting video you did 3 years ago first and was going to share that in my puppy group until I saw this one. Why? Only because it is a bit shorter. Your advice is exactly how I trained my dog not to bite or chew on things from the first day I brought her home and she is such a great not biter and she has never chewed up anything in my home. Given that she's an Aussiedoodle and they are notorious for their herding behaviors which includes nipping, I believe we have already tackled one important hurdle on our journey together. I love sharing training videos that help people live better with their dogs. Thank you for your great training videos.

    He finally fell asleep so I'll have to give your methods a try later.

Tried some of the other correction advice with no joy. 10 mins of this instruction, and if by majic, it's stopped!! I've found that if seated with him, standing up as part of the correction does offer a more reinforced understanding.

      Two kinds of dog trainers: the ones who understand operant conditioning and the ones who don't. Same thing in certain mental health fields. Just because someone is a psych nurse doesn't mean they understand operant conditioning. The ones who do have calm, relaxed patients, the ones who don't...don't. As a mental health professional I can definitely confirm that what Fenrir is telling dog owners is the way to go.

    We’re on our third dog and have forgotten how constant and persistent the puppy biting is.
    I’d learnt from books of old about the ‘making a high pitched yelp’ is supposed to let them know they are not allowed to bite. I’ll have a go with this approach and see if I can get some quicker progress

    I have to say what he said is correct.
    I've had Manchester Terriers and the traditional Jack Russell and if you don't start straight away you won't have a house.
    They soon learn but make sure when you use your 'sound or word' the puppy gives you eye contact, then praise and maybe a treat, I then direct the puppy to the thing I want it to bite.
    They learn fast.
    Patience, repetition and praise.

      @politicallycorrectredskin796 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Be predictable and slightly boring IMO. Dogs and kids love it when adults are predictable and slightly boring, because then they are easy to understand and also you want to avoid boring things. If you waffle you just invite experimentation while the client tries to figure out your responses. As a mental health professional I always nag my trainees constantly about this. It almost doesn't matter what your response is as long as it is predictable and boring. I will take the wrong response in a boring and predictable fashion any day over erratic, more or less correct responses. Dogs and kids will adjust to your weirdness as long as you keep this in mind. They're highly adaptable. Just not to chaos.

    It's helpful to know that some breeds are just going to bite more than others when they're young; Doberman pups, for example, are absolute alligators, and they take lots of consistency and more time than some others to get over the biting. Herding dogs are probably going to bite your legs. Etc.

    I get this. Rowdy is 8 months old and when my grands come near to pet him, he growls then bites. Doesn't break skin. But scares them, leaves a dent that goes away and they cry which makes me cry. I don't know why he won't snuggle with them, like my pit. I Don't want them to be afraid of him. I want them to love him like I do, and my 5-year-old grandson is persistent and hasn't given up but I'm afraid. This is the biting I'm talking about. Now, from another video you said I need to make them tired. This I'm working on even more so with more what I call tricks. This dog for sure is getting me off my butt!! I just don't want him touching the skin of my grandson's.

    What about what I heard that this doesn't allow them to develop bit inhibition? I never thought of such a thing but when our old boy started nipping and then out-right bitting it scared me. He was old and in pain but he received very strict reinforcement from my dad as a puppy and never was allowed to do anything unacceptable. I don't even remember if he ever tried with me and it may have been him or dad. But is bite inhibition a concern later on?

    I have a rescued dog, approximately 2 yrs old. He is responsive to training but seems to have had some trauma in his past. When I try to move him physically from a place he wants to be he gets aggressive, growls (warning) and then snaps, badly. So far, not bitten. If I place a lead on him he will go just about anywhere. Is there a method to get him used to me being more physical with him when it's needed or should that just be avoided? I'm more worried about others who don't know his temperament.

  • @floydsaban4897
    @floydsaban4897 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I want to Love the videos. However, You don’t ever say how to “take it up a notch” when the puppy ignores your strong verbal warning? Is it bad if I hold the puppy by his muzzle until he is done? I can’t exactly “just walk away” with my 13week old GSD puppy attached to my ankle. 😜

    • @NathanMcClintock
      @NathanMcClintock 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can take a month or two to fully address puppy biting so lots of patience is required. A puppy can bite if its hungry or over stimulated or tired as well as playing incorrectly with you. Sometimes allowing them to calm down helps. Walk away, put them outside along for a minute, put the lead on etc... you'll.pick up the signs and reasons pretty quickly.

    • @xblizbroke
      @xblizbroke 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well by now you should be most of the way through the teething phase, so hopefully this isn't too little too late. When he says to take it up a notch he means to be more assertive or jarring with your corrective noise. It's meant to shock them to attention.
      Shepherds are extraordinarily smart, even among dogs. Because of this you can see a "stubborn" streak if you're not handling things right. You have to be consistent. Make sure to use a firm, loud no or whatever your corrective noise is. It has to get his attention and make him stop what he's doing. You then redirect the behavior like giving him a chew toy or bone, and when they start chewing that, you give positive reinforcement. Also, because they're so smart, if you're effectively communicating (meaning correction and rewards timing and consistency) it only takes a handful of times for them to learn and know a command. I house trained my GSD at 10 weeks in just 24 hours and he will recall and obey even hand commands in distracting environments like a dog park or busy sidewalk. I encouraged biting while playing but the command "settle" that I taught him immediately stopped the biting and got him to start winding down. My mom tried the "ow" method with her golden doodle and she was a biting monster BUT never bit too hard because of the "ow" thing. My first time visiting and playing with her I got her wound up, encouraged bite play and got her to settle down, never once using "ow", which had her biting me much harder than she bit them and when my mom went to play she was still biting too hard and my mom complained so I spent about an hour and got the dog to stop biting unless encouraged. It doesn't take a dog months to learn but it might take the human months to teach.

    • @politicallycorrectredskin796
      @politicallycorrectredskin796 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think maybe you missed the redirection bit. It is fine for dogs to bite. They need it. Just not your ankles or your furniture. You're not trying to make the dog stop biting. Just to bite the right things.
      1: Tell it to stop in a stern voice
      2: Give it something you don't mind if it bites
      3: Praise it for doing so
      Rinse and repeat for anywhere between half a day and a month. Just make sure you are not accidentally praising or correcting the wrong thing. Timing is the key there. Corrections ONLY when the unwanted behavior occurs, praise ONLY when the desired behavior is taking place. It'll get easier as long as you set the stern voice aside for things that it is not OK to bite. Don't use it for anything else until the behavior has been moved, which is essentially what you're doing. You don't have to start again from scratch with the couch. If it's the same voice, the dog will remember and usually go find its chew toy on its own.

    When I verbally correct my lab mix puppy (14 weeks) she goes zooming around the house. Like it's just a game to her. She drags a leash while in the house, so I have to grab the leash and put her in time out (gated area). It isn't working. She's still biting us and our older dog. I'm so frustrated with her. 😫
    She's not respecting me. How do I take it up a level?

      eng play, she bites, you stnad up and look another way. ignore her till she calms down. when she calms down praise her.

      @@hariskh8357 that is what I try to do, with little success. When she is excited demanding attention, if I stand up, she'll bite my feet, or jump and bite my clothes, making a hole on them every single time she tries. It happens so fast I can´t stop or redirect her before that happens. My wrists are full of scars and scratches, that bleed again and again, as new bites tear my skin before it has time to heal.

      Firstly make sure she has enough exercise. She may have to excess energy to get rid of! Secondly you need a collar that can correct her behavior with. A slip collar, or prong collar. Start from basics. Use an old shoe or clothing etc If she goes to bit/ chew it firmly say no. Give her a second or two to see if she stops herself. If not give a small correction on the lead and repeat. When she leaves the shoe or whatever alone, praise her and reward. If she tries to bit you say no like you mean it with immediate correction on the lead. Praise her and reward with a toy she can chew!

    I've tried giving a strong NO or AH AH. But no matter how loud i shout he just doesn't care or listen to me. The only way i can stop him from biting me is my removing my self from play. Getting up and just ignoring his behaviour. Is that good or not? I have no clue. But it works

      There’s a channel I like called 1st508th airborne. The guy in that breeds and trains dogs, and he did a video about puppy biting. Where if one of his dogs bites, he places his thumb under the puppy’s tongue gently. Says it doesn’t hurt it but makes it unpleasant for the puppy. I have no idea if it works or not. But might be worth checking out, he has loads of videos like that.

      Jordan walking away is one of a few good methods. So is placing them outside for a minute or putting the lead on them. All gentle ways of showing that you are in control. With my male boxer @ 8 - 12 weeks if he didn't listen I would firmly push him on him side, hold him down, and say UH! until he made a small sigh. At that point he had submitted to me and he would be calm. I had to do that quite often and now I don't. Voice commands now work without problem and he's 14 weeks old.

    Our 1 year old rescue continually nips mainly wanting attention. If we correct her and try to redirect her she just comes at us that much more. All she wants is for us to play with her with a toy. I feel that when we give in and do this it is just reinforcing the bad behavior. We are really struggling to get around this and have her stop her jumping and biting us (mainly me)

    find things THEY like... not all dogs love a stuffed toy enough to chew on it . Raw marrow bone, bully stick, pigs ears, stuffed kong etc are great pacifiers.

    Hopefully adopting a dog named Amber in these next few weeks. My family and I know she’s got some issues but we’re hoping for the best! 😁
    Update: She got adopted before us and now we’ve got a pit named Buffy 💀🤍
