Talking about sit and stay before meals. I started at day one and day 6 I wondered were she was. 🤔 She was sitting in the dark at her sit/stay place and wanted food. 😂

As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

Great tips Wil My pup was 8 months when I got her She absolutely refused eye contact no matter what!
But making her sit and stay til I told her to eat started the eye contact. I just didn’t allow her to eat til she looked at me for five seconds initially. Now she’s looking to me while walking on the lead.
Nowhere near the perfect walk yet and so many rabbits where we walk but persistence is paying off.

    Well said!
The worst part is that most of these negative experiences/incidents COULD HAVE been prevented, had people just done their homework and put in the time and effort with training and working with their dog from day one.
I really love that you are someone who uses bribes with treats constantly. I appreciate that you stress the importance of establishing & building connection & relationship as the priority.

Early socializing is such a good tip. I've had my Chihuahua puppy for 3 weeks now and people in the park are complimenting me on how social he is when most Chi's are barkers. Whenever he hears a human talking in a high pitched voice, he knows they're talking about him and he goes over to greet them and they are absolutely mesmerized. He also runs up to much bigger dogs (unless they're aggressive - he can sense it) and lets them sniff him. Noises of traffic don't bother him either. So proud of my little pup!

I socialised my dog as soon as he was able to after his injections, he was never picked up unless he was tired of course, he met all different dogs and people went to pet stores on his lead, and he has turned into a great little dog who is a friendly well rounded dog, it does work xx

We were very lucky that our vet offered a free 6 week socialization course one day a week we dropped off our gsd puppy for 3-4 hours to play with other dogs and the staff and after the free six weeks we have taken her 1 day a week for group play at 6 months old she is a fantastic dog we made the mistake with our last gsd not to socialize her as much and she only liked us

Our puppy would jump up at her food bowl and basically go bonkers. Now as soon as she sees it, she runs to her spot sits and does a little bum shuffle then we say yes and she gets it. Best thing we ever did.

So true! I have a 3 year old black lab called Bodhi he's the 1st dog we have owned. I managed to find a book by Pippa mattinson on owning and training labs. The 1st chapter was about psycology and i must say at first i thought this was quite deep but looking back it all makes sense.
This was a cracking example of training and the reward of how the bond grows is a real self of achievement. Keep up the good work👍

I wish I’d seen this before we got our puppy especially the first point. We thought we couldn’t take him out to places at all, he met mother in laws dog fully vaccinated day after we got him, but he’s a bit wary of people & some dogs. I started hand feeding him 1.5 months ago most of his meals if I can & train at the same time, it’s a habit now. You’re an amazing k9 leader.

We just adopted a 5 month old sheltie from an elderly lady with health problems that couldn't keep her. The pup is sweet but has had little to no socialization other than the lady and her other dog. We are struggling with fear of strangers, noises, anything new or unknown, anxiety and fear aggression to our cats with her. Not entirely sure how to go about changing this. She is not entirely treat motivated. I have begun to look at your videos and wondering if you have one about this? We are in need of some guidance and help.

That's all very well about socialising puppies early on, and carrying them around to get all sorts of new experiences, but I have a 15 week old puppy not yet vaccinated or able to take out on a lead as not used to one (working on it) and I can barely lift her up, let alone carry her!! She's a Scottish Deerhound. Say no more!

I picked up my puppy at 12 weeks and he was well socialised. Lived in a family with an older Lab puppy, his mother and two boisterous male children. His siblings had already left prior to me picking him so he was used to being the youngest without his siblings. Has far as routine with food is concerned, that isn't how dogs live in their natural environment, they are naturally random feeders and it is also advised to let them fast for at least one day a week once they're fully grown. Especially, if they are on a raw food diet, their bodies have to be given the time to fully digest it. I notice that now that my puppy is 8 months old, he usually prefers to eat his breakfast after he has been out for some exercise and able to empty his bowels. Some days he will eat more than other days, just like they do in the wild. Random feeding is far more species appropriate.

So proud of my little girl. now 7 months. first time restaurant I was dreading it. She was a little star. after initially woofing at another older dog and a couple of whines. She settled to watch all around her. Having her lunch ONLY when she was quiet and still. Yippee xx I'm convinced she was mirroring the behavior of the older dog, who was very good. Biggest mistake people make with puppy's: Taking bad behaviour to heart and over reacting or giving up on training methods because they didn't behave how you would expect a human to. Stop being reactive like your dog. Take a deep breath, calm assertive leader, firmly tell them to stop, re direct or put them in a time out untill they show signs of giving up ie laying down looking relaxed and sorry. Esculating the situation by shouting won't do anything. It lowers your value and makes them ignore you. These are the main issues I find with anybody I know with bad behaved dogs, or bad behaved owners reallly.
Be the fun but firm parent you wanted growing up.

Nice. I too am a big softy, but I also know doggy kung fu. Once a big American Bulldog on San Onofre beach was confronted with US Marines on Camp Pendleton in a hum vee (because his humans went a little too far south). Since the dog was deaf and couldn't respond to vocal commands or sounds, and didn't flinch when the hum vee honked it's horn. Even gunfire couldn't flinch this beast (he was very large and powerful, and deaf). The human (not me) saw the Marine calling it in. Informing his CO, nodding his head, nodding yet again. Did nothing because the American Bulldog is the mascot of the US Marines. So the dog, sensing his triumph, trotted forward and peed on the hum vee with 2 US Marines, with their rifles and other accoutrements and sat there until they left.

Do you have any advice? I thought of putting his food in a Kong so he can work for it, but since he is free-feeding already I feel like that won't do anything. I don't want him to become food aggressive.

question, my son and i come down in different sides if this debate. do you feed the dog first and then walk it so it can do its bussiness, or do you walk your dog and then feed it and expect the dog to hold its bowl movements until the next walk hours away. say 6 to 8 hour wait

For puppies? Both. Give them many chances to be successful outside.

Sir i have a gsd 4 months...good learner....but sometimes gets a little aggressive...though he had never bitten us...but suddenly get a high temperament...like when we suddenly picks him up or anything like that....but then we scold him and he gets quite....is this a alarming issue or its just a common thing and he will stop this as he will grow.

I love all your work, it has helped me so much with my puppy (9 month
old beagle). Just wondering, do you have any advice on how to deal with
stopping my dog chewing all of his beds to pieces. Even if I take him
for a long walk or to the dog park and he exercises until he can no
longer stand. He still wakes up in the middle of the night and chews his
beds apart. I now have him sleeping on a towel which he has less
success pulling apart, although it does have holes in it, but I feel he
deserves a good bed eventually. Any help will be much appreciated

Hi Will! First of all thank you for all the amazing training videos!
I am going to have a golden retriever puppy for the first time ever in mid July and I’m writing to seek your advise!
He is 10 weeks old (right now) and will be coming from abroad (Romania) once he’s 12 weeks and has got rabies vaccine, then he can come into the UK (21 days after vaccination)!🤦🏻‍♀️ He’s staying with my brother in law till then!
It’s such a hard time for me waiting, and I know that I’m missing great opportunity training him these days…
Do you have any advise in regards to his behaviour and training while he’s away? Your help is highly appreciated!🙏🏻

its just fine as long as it does not touch what other dogs have touched. Ie people.

First off not sure why you need a vets permission. I have GSDs and have owned them for over 40 years. Second, I have not controlled their food as pups. My dogs as pups have all been socialized even before their last shot which was their rabies. You neglected to say they can be socialized with dogs that have had all shots. Just wanted to add, I compete and title in ScH III, certify in SAR and Therapy. So I do know about training 🙂
