Thank you so much. For 20 years I was helping people fixing their roofs where as other contractors wanted to replace it. I never made the money that other roofing contractors was making due to the type of service I was providing. But, little did I know that my knowledge would came in handy in my later years. For the last 4 years we have been posting videos regularly and have helped many. Your comment is very heartwarming and encouraging. I wish more people would take the time to say something. How the flying fuck can you install a felt roof then apply a different product to a detail to dry in. I felt roofs there all felt I epdm there all epdm I single ply upvc they all single ply I liquid whole system is liquid When you start mixing one with the other your clearly not doing it right
I like this video, how u shop around home depot. Most of time, it is hard for a DIY person, to find the right product locally, because we don't understand some of technical terms.
Thanks! That was very helpful. I paid for a flat roof years ago. Its leaking. After your video I can now see three things. 1) What they did. 2) What they did poorly 3) What I need to do. Perfect
I have been helping people all my life. That is how I was brought up. This is just an extension of my life to help. What I show is what I have learned and practiced over the years. But the last 5 years is when I started putting out videos. I thank God for my 3 sons who, not knowingly, got me into a "GoPro" camera and other techniques and materials of roofing. I am an old-school guy. I had a $6000 video camera to drag around, which was a nuisance. I only did "Torch Down" flat roofs and never ventured into other materials. My one son started his own roofing business, and he investigated other materials and told me about it. So, I am trying to say that God Orchestrated everything so that at 66 years old, I could still help others. I really appreciate everyone's comments and support. Without you guys, this will be for nothing.
Great job! I've done similar with a building I have in the back of my property that has a 1/12 pitch. After applying the cap sheet I coated the entire roof with Henry's 587 Dura-Brite White Acrylic Elastomeric Reflective Roof Coating. That roof lasted 20 years and probably could have gone another 5 before absolutely needing replacement.
I have a huge flat roof house that I bought in 2016. Roof last replaced in 1992. Since I bought the house I spread that rubber roof coating white stuff all over it to extend its life a bit longer since it was leaking till I could afford a replace. Learning a lot from you here so will be attempting a re roof project soon. Thank you 🙏
I learned something, and you're a better man than I am for going to church. My neighbor wants to hire me for his roof, but I have to first talk him into it not being a shawdy job. His first attempt totally failed, so I would first have to demolition it, and then adjust it to a slight slant that he is a little stubborn on. I am going to have knuckle his head a little to make the adjustment. I'll just work for the same wage he's working for, and he should lay that out straight; being a decent fellow.
*nice video for DIYr's* *worked on many construction sites, done roofing too. i am thinking of using "roofing granules" on one side of the roof. too many roof companies nay NO! but in flat roof repairs we've installed new rolls and added granules. i've been wanting to experiment and i'm going to do it. brother is a cheap skate buy his roof needs new shingles where the sun has beat it to death. i've used a mesh with Henry's and has worked. so i will try the Roof Granules. yes i can put new shingles over it, but i want to experiment* *FYI it has only 1 layer of shingles so adding another will be 2. maximum allowed is 2. i've seen worse 5 to 7 layers / piles of shingles making roof too heavy as Photovoltaic / Solar Thermal Tech. we cannot install solar panels on more than 2 layers because of weight and hardware cannot be mounted* *i've seen bad jobs* *for cheap brother and my wanting to prove a point i will do that one side of roof where he also has solar panels. if doesn't work i'll fix roof. so granules or that liquid sealer you roll on* *your roof expertise input would be appreciated*
The GAF Liberty system works great, and you can use any self-adhering underlayment. GAF also wants a primer on the plywood before installing the underlayment, but the underlayment + cap sheet works great.
Hello, interesting video. I have a question, why does the video show roof of 2 different colors? At minute 4, the roll is brown/red and then at about minute 6 until the end the roll is light grey? Is it 2 separate projects? Or gray roll went on top of brown roll?
Hey great video. I'm about to do my own flat roof and am really curious how to cut my gravel-stop flashing so that I can bend it for outside corners. Pretty much what you just did in this video with the drip edge only with gravel-stop. Do you know where I could find some info? Have you ever addressed this in a video?
Hello, can I use the regular asphalt underlayment tar paper stuff and then put this peel and stick cap? The base they recommend to use is also 116$ I’m only doing a shed and really don’t wanna spend another 250$ for base
Head's up folks! This is the only video which shows you how to remove the release film while the sheet is laid in position! Which works way better, and if your piece is long than 16' good luck by yourself. Everyone else flips the sheet long was and let's the flap fall, which is fine with three people. Warning! The Liberty Cap sheet comes packaged with tapes wrapping in two spots to hold the roll, if you start pulling your release film from that end in will tear underneath and you won't be able to get the sheet up to remove it!! The tape years the release sheet as you pull, just make sure you start to pull from the other end. I was able to quickly roll the sheet up long ways and get most of it free of release plastic. Just a warning. I ended up rolling the sheets long ways, only 16' feet long ways, but it was pretty cool today, don't try it when it's hot or you'll have a sticky wicket!!😊
I have a flat roof that needs to be recovered. What is the best method of going over the cap sheet with the Liberty system. My thoughts, would be to add another base and then the cap sheet. This is in Florida and I can go two layers before I have to rip it all up.
Metal flashing is of the past. There is still a place for it, but I have been using liquid flashing for the past 10 years with great success. Metal flashing has to be embedded into a cement wall, or covered with siding. Not so with liquid flashing. They have been using termination bars for EPDM roof on brick walls that was not to successful in many cases.
Hi, I would be tempted to nail the dripping edge directly on the plywood, then the base, then the cap sheet, so that in case of a leak the water goes on top of the drip-edge, not under (towards the edge of the plywood), No? Also, it would be nice to put a piece of cardboard, a tarp or whatever to avoid tar stains on the white roof, doesn't take much time and so much nicer. I have an other question, if you have a chance, I have a torched roof on my work shop, it's porous and leaks in places, could I use the cap-sheet directly on top of the old roof? Thank you.
You're correct.. in theory at least. This is not the proper way to do this install. First step should be a 4-6" rubber flashing directly onto the plywood, then drip edge, then asphalt primer and THEN your base sheet
Since the flat roof material is only has 10 year warranty, I wonder if it would be better to prep the the base sheet the same way as installing a flat roof then install galvalume on top for a carport. I can order one continuous sheet so if my flat root is 24'x24, can I order 8 of 24'5" x3' and last much longer.
Help !! Who stocks Karnak 81 ? I've called many roofing supply companies. I'm in Philadelphia area. If your son would like to fix my small flat roof, I will hire him. Thank you much. Enjoy your videos !!
You make everything look easy! I need a little advice on something a little different from the video, I bought a place that has a shed with metal roof panels. upon inspection the roof panels are either overlapped 1 hump or not at all and I can see daylight where the edges didnt overlap veryy well. I wouldnt mind trying to save the panels, what would be a good way to remediate the overlapping issue?
That turbo poly stuff is like 300$ in this economy but I’m sure it’ll last a life time just like gramps said. I might just see what kinda of crap the depot has and work with that.
@flat roof doctor. Help me install a flat roof. I will do the work, you supervise my work. I will pay for your airfare, food, accommodation, and time. It will make a good youtube video. Let me know if you are interested.
That is so wrong. Another torch of flashing up the wall and down on the cap and your seams torched properly then not counter flashing like you said. Counter is for side walls. Wall flashing after the cap flashing but leave enough space for siding the wall also. Man oh man in winter and heavy snow and rain storms your method would last maybe 3 years
It appears you are talking about "torch Down" This is not torch down. This video is not for you, iy is to help home owners and DIY people. The liquid flashing I used will last 20 years. I don't know what the problem is.
Peel and stick directly over OSD with metal edging first around roof perimeter works great in sunny areas like AZ for light roofs to provide sun shade.

I put this same product on a roof, a good alternative to torch down. 2 years, no leaks. 👍 The coated fleece flashing method is news to me. Good info.

Typically on a pitched roof you want the metal edge overlaps top over bottom for water barrier, same with flashing I think.
