    As an old roofer who installed many roofs of all sorts in the Lake Tahoe basin back in the 1990s, you can't beat the standing seam, snap roofing. They are rated to withstand much higher wind speeds than other metal roof panels and their fasteners are hidden which means no "walk-outs" over time. Standard metal roofing panels with regular roofing screws (with the rubber washer) have a tendency to "walk" (back) out over time, especially in environments with temperature extremes and where roofs have snow loads in the winter. We were always squeezing in metal roof "tune-ups" between our installs which consisted of resealing all the flashings and re-driving in all the "back-out" screws. Tune-ups weren't cheap back then, and I imagine aren't cheap now. Standing seam roof panels are a bit more expensive (or they used to be years ago), but worth every penny.

      Thank you for posting this. My wife and I are planning our home on our own land, and I knew I wanted metal, but was literally in the middle of researching the different types. I’m in northern New England, so we have snow/ice loads to worry about. How does standing seam integrate with rooftop solar?

    • @Graybeard_
      @Graybeard_ หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@k1sfd1974 Solar came after my time in roofing (lol), but I cannot imagine installing panels on standing seam would be any different than other steel roofing panels, as the solar panels have short legs that hold them above the ridges of the panels.. Of course it always pay to inquire with the solar panel manufacturer, asking them if there are any installation issues with standing seam panels.

    My wife and I built our own house. We used weather watch (Ice and Water layer) on the whole roof, not combination of weather watch and underlay. We did not worry about rain. I say this for people watching that might be planning their own build, if you delay roofing use weather watch on the whole roof.

      That's a great time saver, as long as you have load bearing walls in the spot where you drop the bundle of metal (or a bunk of plywood) if not you could very well have that bundle of metal crashing through not only the roof, but the floor below as well. Seen it happen.

    Putting on gutters in a cold climate is fine. However, you should also install "avalanche protection". This is metal that goes at 90 degrees to the standing seam a bit back of the low edge of the roof and prevents the snow from sliding down and destroying your gutters. All that will get in the gutters is the snow melt, not a huge heavy amount of snow. I live in Colorado where we get snow and that method has worked well for us. The alternative is to have NO gutters and to skip avalanche protection. But, then you get a huge amount of snow sliding off the roof and piling up around the perimeter of the house. The official name for these is "snow guards".

    • @salttea8926
      @salttea8926 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I don't know why to use snow breakers or avalanche protection or snow guards when roofs are made in snowy areas to get rid of that snow to stay out of your roof... It is better to replace those cheap gutters than blowing all of your house..

    Back in the 80's myself and family put on 4 roofs on a 40' x 108' barn I was building. We used a standing seam roof from a company in Salem, OR called Dana Brothers. The worst part of the roof was getting it off the semi as I had no fork truck or lift available. we ended up damaging a few pieces but a friend of mine was into auto body repair and fixed the bends that were put in the metal from unloading. It took myself and family all summer long to tar paper and lay the metal roofing. There was a 50 year warranty on the metal and 30 year on the paint. I had to build my own break for the metal which was made out of 1" bar stock and rebar for a handle. I learned from that journey that it is better to hire a professional, not that the roof was installed incorrectly, but the time it takes to install. Since then I have had a standing seam roof put on my current home and love it! Stay safe you guys!

    We live in central Washington and routinely get snow and below 0 temps in winter. I have composition roof and gutters. The front of the house faces north and rear faces south. (Obvviously😀) During long cold spells of below freezing weather the north gutters fill with snow melt and freeze the water in the gutters solid. The following summer I installed heat wire in the gutters on the north side only. I leave the wire energized during the coldest part of the winter have had no new freezing episodes since.

    We're building a pole barn house. The builder used the typical ply-vinyl roofing underlayment on the roof, which leaked like a sieve during all of the last round of rainstorms. When I spoke to the builder about it, he said it would be fine once the metal was on the roof. Sure, what could go wrong with 50,000 screws through your roof. We opted to go buck wild and tore off the underlayment and put Epilay Epistik peel and stick on the entire roof. I hope the cost is worth it. Good on you for trying this install yourself. It looks great.

    We have a 27 gauge metal roof. Found out by accident a good snow hack. They were supposed to put gutter guards on some of our gutters. We have a steep roof. They told us we needed a strip of metal along the roof to slow down the water so it would not shoot over the gutter. They then forgot to put the guards on but we have the strips down. The snow, what little we get in TN, builds up and slides off the roof and rips the gutters off. Except where those strips are that holds the snow from sliding on metal roofs. Or you have to lower the gutters below the arch of the snow that curls off. Or replace the gutters a lot.

No ice jams in the winter...no leaves clogging the gutters. The rain falls off the roof and waters the shrubs and flower beds below! It works well for us! (Love you guys! You can use cheap pull through scissor sharpeners to sharpen tin shears like Accusharp or a sharpening stone.

    Opinion on gutters in cold weather, from a long-time East Idaho subscriber. (1) absolutely necessary; we went without gutters for a couple of years, and it was miserable; (2) always hired it out, but I'm only about a quarter as ambitious and talented as you. I'm a believer in continuous gutters manufactured on site; (3) get leaf guards.

    I HATE Gutters.
    I LOVE 24” overhangs that shield my one story home from most rain, moisture and summer sun while allowing winter sun in.
    With proper grading and rocks around the wall base there is no splashing on siding and water runs away from the house on all sides.
    No need for gutters unless you are trying to capture water.

    Metal roofing. Technically challenging. Physically easy. Love getting hired to install this stuff.

    Used to do seamless gutters in Michigan. Depends on length and downs. 1 down spout long run start high and just off level to down end.
    2 downs centers high just off level down to end caps

    We just installed the same roof on my buddy's new house. Same... Steep learning curve and he had peaks and valleys... But we did get it. and just like you slow and frustrating in the beginning but "WOW" when we got it done. He went with black in a white house.

    Solid sponsor today. Just ordered a set of those ratchet straps. They addressed all my frustrations with that product! Also, thanks for the pro tip on the harbor freight metal shears. You guys rock.

    The one thing to be aware of when using a "peel-and-stick" membrane underlayment, is that there are different types that have different temperature ratings. The ones to use under metal roofing materials have a much higher temp rating than those used under composite materials. We used Grace "Ultra"™, for ours. It's a high temperature rated ( 300 deg. F ), self-adhering butyl roofing underlayment. The temperature of metal roofing in direct sunlight can cause under rated membranes to degrade, harden, shrink and crack over time.

    I hate Monday morning QBs. But here I go: use a 12-18-24” bit extension when screwing down the roof. Also, glad y’all used plywood on the was horses to brace the roof panels. Y’all have such a loving energy!

    Pro tip; don't buy consumable goods at the Big Box. Things that have sharp edges or points are usually best sourced elsewhere. It's easy to see why Kyle likes that particular "standing seam" roof. It has the look, if an installer has paid attention to dimensional control, it's a dream. And it's weather tight. And now you know why they put all that tape on those fancy schmancy green boards! You picked a good roof to learn on- one plane, relatively low fall- a great place for Ambitious folks to hang out!
