I traded my SEGA Master System for an old C64 when I was a kid and this was the first game i tried... needless to say the second I heard this tune I knew I'd made the right decision! =)
Tempest I find this better than chiptune since most chiptune tracks are made in modern DAWs. This was made on a machine with just 64K total memory, 48K usable (I think). Not to mention the processor was about 2 Mhz and all of the music was manually programmed at least in the early days.
@@HazelTheHare actually 1 MHZ only. And about 0.9 MHZ on PAL countries, that seems weaker than Atari 2600 (1.19 MHz) since they both have similar chip.
@SeeleDesTigers No, the sounds didn't come from a ROM chip, they were procedural sounds. The SID chip was not able to play sound samples or MIDI sounds as we know them today. Every little beep from all three channels had to be programmed manually into hardware registers with attack, decay, envelope etc and this would create the sound.

@JulianPaulCarter There are many different sound plug-ins you can use for emulators (depending on your emulator). You can go find other ones that are to your liking.
I also prefer this version to SID 8580. The 8580-Version sounds like someone used a softener which is quite nice for the melody sample, but the baseline looses its rough and dirty charme. I wondering which Synth could be used for a cover to keep the baseline as prominent as in this video. The techno version here on youtube is too soft. Anyone got an idea, which Synth should be used!?

Yeah as some others have said this is a jazzed up version of the music that was used for Cobra on the ZX Spectrum. Martin Galway made the Cobra track so I would assume he did this too?
Yep yep yep....commented here 3 years ago. Listening to this still gives me goosebumps even though the game was so relentlessly hard. Still, unlike modern "games" the whole family could enjoy these.
@zpunout even more amazing is how you are listening now (and listen to normal music) of recorded and not sinthesized sound that usualy can take up more then 90MB, compressed in a mp3 that only takes up 1MB.. and not pre made electric signals stored in a seperate chip triggerd in a time sequence to make music...that takes up 45kB

this one was recorded on a C64-v2 right? the bass/filters sounds much more numb than my own C64 box did as I recall this tune.
