The Lost Art of Handheld Consoles
In the 2000s, portable gaming was the big gaming trend. Handheld consoles evolved from the simple Gameboy into the futuristic DS and 3DS. Sony also tried portable gaming with the PSP and PS Vita, but it was no match for the Nintendo DS.
With the releases of the Switch and Steam Deck, though, portable gaming lost the quirks that made it unique. The games on the Switch and the Steam Deck are ports of games you can find on other consoles, and the nostalgic social features, such as Pictochat and Streetpass, were left behind. This video goes over the golden age of handheld gaming and the reasons why it has became soulless.

The plague of square buildings is real. The Y2K aesthetic of crazy buildings has been replaced with boring, Minecraft looking buildings. Companies no longer want to have cool, nostalgic interiors straight out of the 90s. This video goes over the rise of gentrified square buildings and why they are so prevalent now with fast food restaurants and apartments. chon.digital/ discord.com/invite/b4HGj...

I hate how Ebay and Etsy shoot up for like, millions of dollars now for DSes and Lites.
i dont mind the switch's form factor tbh but i also use a lot of public transportation and also carry a backpack most of the time so bringing around a big switch case never bothered me. I also missed out on the DS generation the last fully portable console i owned was a GBA SP back in the day
7:38 fly ain’t even been in shot the whole video
Excellent video.. I went to go play my gray brick gameboy the other day and the batteries I had left in there exploded and I got battery acid all over my hands. At least we don’t have to worry about that crap with modern systems I guess
I'm watching this on a PS Vita
Been playing my DS so much recently. I just miss that era of gaming. My local GameStop had a loose copy of Legacy of Goku 2 for like $12. Great condition too, and I’ve been playing that this weekend since we have a winter storm rolling through. Perfect time to curl up on the couch and play some gameboy games. I also highly recommend the RG35XXSP. It’s been such a great purchase. Can play any GBA and GBC games you could possibly want.
Woah no way I was the dude that told you about my road trip in the grocery store
I carry around a ps vita every day, it has a great mp3 player, modding capabilities, and has great games for it too. It may have not sold well, but it is an amazing piece of hardware that is basically a ps3 in your pocket.
Still walkin’ with that DS in 2025
Agreed. I never found the switch diff from an ipad, thus i was never interested. Also the controls
Turns out having 1 device that can do everything sucks ass. I love having unique devices with their own purposes. I got a Tamagotchi connection reissue for christmas and it's been more fun than any doomscrooling or bullshit my phone offers me. I've rediscovered my 3ds for the 10th time and why it's awesome. The PSP Go and Gameboy Micro are my dream devices tho. Theyre so slim and cute and can go with you anywhere! There's also just something so endearing and awesome about social technology up until the mid 2010s when smartphones became really good. The 3ds was a lot of Gen Z's introduction to the internet and it had some awesome features. The attention to detail and unnecesarry but awesome features are something totally lost now. Who needs social stuff built in to a Switch when you're probably pausing it every 10 minutes to check your phone. And a last though when you bring up price of Pokemon Red and Blue. I have a switch lite that I've only bought like 4 download play games and 1 cartridge game for. I cannot imagine spending $60 on a 6 year old re-release of a 10 year old game. The used market isn't much better either with Animal Crossing being $45-50 used. It's a combination of their strict pricing and so many games being bought digitally that there's more buyer than sellers on the used market. And the worst part is that digital publishers follow Nintendo and will be keeping their games at like $20-30 while the steam, xbox, and playstation ports are like $5. My Switch Lite is a paperweight because there's no option for me. Compare that to the 3ds which was $40 max a game, and regularly sold awesome retro games for $5 and under. There was something for everyone at a budget price point on the 3ds. But everytime I open the laggy ass switch eshop i just end up feeling anxious about money and disappointed
I miss how gadgety everything used to be. My sister had a Sidekick back in the day and I still think it’s peak phone design.
Nice video !
I mean many In Canada and Europe still have cable maybe move to one of those countries if you miss it so much.
WORLD TRADE MARKET
Even Minecraft looks better than these
the best mall near me (2 hours away thx rural america) before covid placed a new rule that any minors couldn’t walk around without an adult. me and my group of friends were 13 and got caught and the cops escorted us through the entire mall to find my friends mom. crazy bro.
Are u hate minecraft?
Thank you, Paul Blart (Mall Cop) You saved my favorite past time. Walking around the mall aimlessly just window shopping
My mall got destroyed by a tornado in 2020, I really miss having a mall.
Yeah sorry but you're really cool
Me and my family used both streaming and cable
That's why I don't eat inside, I always go home and eat because it's much more pleasant
Like you said, everyone saw one episode and you had time to talk and/or laugh about it. I miss that sense of community.
Housing should be near shopping centers
In 2007, I was in the 7th grade, and I walked into the bathroom during third period Spanish class, and some guy dropping a deuce shouted “1000 Miles seems pretty far but they got planes and trains and cars. I’d walk to you if I had no other way.” Your video and outro took me back to that time. 👍🏻
I still watch it.
Mall retailers do not carry “basics” that’s why you have Walmart
Who will win? Architectors with phd Or Some 13 year old Minecraft builder
The 13 year old, especially at making it look good.
America has two types of buildings, corporate and dull, or wooden and outdated. Go anywhere in Europe/the UK and you'll see countless styles of buildings, often multiple types in a single town or street that somehow work well together. It's the US that has taken the dull and boring approach to everything and it's a trend I hope the rest of us don't copy. My mate from Upstate NY was on a video call with me a few days ago, went to Mc Donald's and that building was so... dull and lifeless, I showed her our local one and the one further out, and both of them had a completely different vibe and style we've had there for years. The uniforms are the same dull, grey and "smart" types, but the restaurants are just as full of life as they were 20 years ago. Why does the US business look(and taste apparently) worse in the US than it does overseas?
Saying these buildings look like they are from Minecraft is an insult to Minecraft builds
7:30 Now I'm instantly reminded of that one SpongeBob episode. What was the place called? Tentacle Acres or Tentacle Oaks I think. And that was back in Golden Era of SpongeBob!
Finally! Somebody's actually complaining about it! Deary me, it took a while! I completely agree, these things are uglier than a Squidward close-up picture! But not only them! The bridges are now just a slab on a few poles. No fancy viaducts or girders these days. And the motorways! ...They just remind me why I prefer railways over roads. At least cottages are still the same. Or anything you design yourself. But good luck building that with these cheap scapes around telling you that their cheap rubbish they pulled out of some old Garry's Mod map is better and more structurally sound. 4:50 I know that feeling...and I don't have 18! Let alone 25! Nor even American! This is a worldwide problem!
To be completely honest, Minecraft and Garry's Mod buildings and maps look better than this "modern" "architecture", if you can even call it that.
Bro stop. I’m a grown man. You’re gonna make me cry.😭
I've never hearn anyone say "Minecraft look" before but true lol.
Lol, my family has the best of cable and most streaming services😂
To be honest I think people using squares is really perfect
Guys let’s make all our buildings spheres!
You funny I like you💯 and your rap taste🔥
Giving us triple digits with nothing interesting on for triple figure dollars made me kill my cable. Especially all the East/West versions of channels like Nick, HBO, ESPN, etc. which inflated the number of channels you were supposed to be excited about - they were the same channel but had a three hour difference. The downside to streaming now is the inevitable consolidation of the market and not having as much choice. And charging me every month all while still serving me ads is the ultimate cable company play. The best part about pre-digital cable was how easy it was to steal. Splitting a neighbors line, climbing a pole or lifting a sidewalk cover to connect yourself up - it was easy lol you just had to not get caught.
This is why I miss radio.
I miss the small local mall we once had. It no longer existed shutting down in 2012 if my memory served me right. It was such a great place. All that remains, a reminder of the past is a food court. Which used to consist of many of the former food locations. Different structure but did house them for a time. Aside from that a solution to help Introverts is to add kiosks where we can order our food and then optionally pay at the counter. Something some Taco Bells do. It would help some introverts slowly open up more.
I do miss the days where the newest episode was on one day of the week Like on Friday or Saturday or Monday I don't like having the option to watch all the new episodes all in one sitting I like being Able to watch one jew episode and just think about it. And tell others about it. And discuss about it.. And get excited for the new episode on whatever day it would come on. It would give me something to look forward to.
Before i cancelled direct tv ..there was not much new stuff on. Nothing much good. Just lots of reruns All the good stuff was on streaming.
America used to have some pretty cool fast food architecture. I actually was partial to the little Spanish mission buildings with real bells on them our Taco Bells had. And the huge electric lighted ten gallon hats at Arbys. Remember when KFCs had giant rotating buckets of chicken on them? Heh heh. Not to mention the White Castle restaurants used to be real little white castles. Now, all of them nothing but vapid, empty and cheap squares. No wonder our lives are increasingly meaningless. How far we have fallen, lol.
The proof that we are all in a simulated reality is really piling up.
3 words- Saturday morning cartoons We don't have them anymore I used to get up at 6am on Saturday to watch them. Then I get a VCR to record them .that way I didn't have to get up so early. But I do miss SMC's
You better go to the Philippines and how they are still thriving today.
I like malls because they have elevators.
Can someone tell me what the songs around the 4-5 minute mark are?? I recognize them but my memory is so trash I can’t remember where exactly they are from
