Today I received Tomb of Sand, I'm so excited. Even though it's long, I saw that the chapters are pretty short and the font is big and nice, so I hope I will fly through it. Great video!

I'm the same with Tomb of Sand, it's a book that caught my attention and the more I see it the more I want to read it!
Also your chat about your hoodie made me laugh, I always worry that people will notice I'm always wearing the same thing..but not enough to change my clothes to film haha

I've read both the other Olga T books (which are quite different from each other!) and am looking forward to Books of Jacob, but have a bunch of other doorstoppers going on at the moment, so it'll be a while yet. Tomb of Sand also sounds interesting, but one of the doorstoppers I'm currently reading is set in the aftermath of Indian partition - I think that one will also need to wait. I ordered Elena Knows in Spanish and hope to get it to it very soon - the reviews have all been so good! The other books on the list aren't tickling my fancy as much...

Two doorstoppers about partition would definitely be a lot.

Being a native hindi speaker, i'm glad a hindi book made it to the list.
Hindi literature and particularly novels have always been about sad events, social justice and satire.
It is antagonistic to sanskrit and persian that had dominated the literature circle of north india during pre-modern times and had elitist nature.
I hope to read this book soon.

Flights and Drive Your Plough, are both great on audio. I’m put off The Books of Jacob because of the length…. But I do want to read it. The one I’m definitely going to read is Elena Knows.

I loved Cursed Bunny! It is squeamish, but it's not quite Chuck Palahniuk level squeamish, if that makes sense. I think the first two stories are the grossest ones. (Also two of my favorites, but I'm a weirdo that enjoys body horror.) I would probably at least look up what the first story, "The Head," is about before diving into it. I also wouldn't let the "science fiction" deter you. Some of the stories have a sci-fi slant, but they're more folklorish than they are technical.

i think you'd enjoy Love in the Big City - it's a really bittersweet, quiet novel. I'm sad Paradais didn't make it!! I did really enjoy Elena Knows, it was so good!! I still need to read Tomb of Sand, A New Name and Books of Jacob

Tokarczuk is such an amazing author. Flights is my favourite, but I think Drive Your Plow…is more accessible. Both are great. BOJ is fine. Not my favourite by her. It has some great moments and sentences, but it’s a bit too much on detail.

    • @SupposedlyFun

Elena Knows has my vote for the win, but I’ve only read that one and Heaven from the shortlist. I thought Heaven was really great and well worth a read, but it was a bit below Elena Knows for me.

I’ve read Heaven, Paradais, and Elena Knows from the longlist. Heaven was middling in my opinion, but I’m not surprised it’s on the shortlist because a lot of people love it. Very happy to see Elena Knows on it though - it’s not going to be a favorite of the year for me, but it’s really good (could have been 5 stars for me, but I didn’t think the ending was as strong). Paradais was also great; I’m disappointed it didn’t make the shortlist, but I’m not completely surprised because it’s not as strong as Hurricane Season (again, in my opinion). Melchor is a really excellent writer though!
