    Why do I imagine a murder wall of book covers with sticky notes and string running off everywhere in your house as you to work out which works will be on your list? A great collections of titles and many of my favorites from last year and these last few months. But this is my first time at this rodeo, so I have no idea where to toss my allegiance. If I had to pick, I still would like to see The Great Circle get some literary book award love to secure a strong future and remain in print in the years ahead.

      That is a fairly accurate rendering of me preparing my predictions. 😂
      I think The Great Circle has a really good shot. If I were listing a top four it would have been (1) Love Songs, (2) The Trees, (3) Crossroads, and (4) The Great Circle. I just didn't want to go down that rabbit hole because at that point I would have felt obligated to rank all of the books I listed. We'll see!

Of the long shots, I am rooting for Gordo. There’s only one I really don’t want to win (“Please don’t do this to me.”). I don’t think JCO has much of a chance this year, but a win would make one BookTuber ecstatic and his reaction video alone would justify the win.

Hell of A Book was a hell of a book and might slide under the radar as Well as My Year Abroad as it’s always checked out of the library. I’m going to go with Lincoln Highway as the winner , which I haven’t read but there is a 20 person wait for 8 copies at the local library. I don’t know of any other book that they have 8 copies of.

    1999 was *such* an interesting year for the Pulitzer! I am ultimately glad The Hours was chosen, but Cloudsplitter by Russell Banks is so damn amazing, and though I’m not too keen on Barbara Kingsolver’s fiction (love her essays though) I was captivated beyond belief by The Poisonwood Bible (read all three of these thrice now!) - Russell Banks may be a true lovable long shot, but I haven’t read Foregone. But considering Cloudsplitter, Continental Drift and The Afflictions he feels a bit like a Louise Erdrich scenario to me!

    • @SupposedlyFun
      @SupposedlyFun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I loved The Poisonwood Bible so I think that’s where my heart lies for that year. Banks hasn’t been as prolific as Oates but he is for sure an author who feels like he should have a Pulitzer.

    I still can't believe Love Songs wasn't on the Women's Prize Longlist. Shocking. The Trees is really good! The only thing is Everett doesn't really like literary prizes. I read The Prophets when it came out and really liked it but I don't think it will win. If The Sweetness of Water wins I'll be shocked. How Beautiful We Were is a beautifully written story. I would love to see it win but it probably won't. No One is Talking About This is a no for me too. I tried to read it but DNed. I'm with you on the don't do this to me. Great video!

    OMG. No One is Talking… Surely it has to go away after this, right?
    What a great list of books. I’ve got to go back through this to add some to my TBR. As I said to you on Twitter, Love Songs seems like a lock to me, but I kind of hate the fact that this prize is so secretive. At least we know the board isn’t ALL old white guys…

    • @SupposedlyFun
      @SupposedlyFun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In a way the secrecy is refreshing given the drawn-out process the other prizes deploy (and the ways they seem to almost desperately crave social media interaction). On the other hand, it gets really infuriating a lot of the time.

    • @mradcaqbdb
      @mradcaqbdb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SupposedlyFun I think the way the other prizes do things is far superior. We get to participate in a way and we also get introduced to so many great authors and books along the way. But the Pulitzer is the Pulitzer, so they get to do it whatever way they want to. I was so thrilled when Colson Whitehead one his second.

    • @SupposedlyFun

    Several of your picks are on the Pen/Faulkner longlist as well---how often do those line up with The Pulitzer historically? Do you follow the Pen/Faulkner Prize? I would love a video about that prize as well!!

    • @SupposedlyFun
      @SupposedlyFun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do loosely follow the Pen/Faulker. Surprisingly, it doesn't line up with the Pulitzer very often at all. Since 1981, the Pulitzer winner has only been a finalist for the Pen/Faulkner 11 times. They have only aligned (i.e. the same book won both prizes) twice--for Michael Cunningham's The Hours and Richard Ford's Independence Day (both times in the 1990s).
