Ailey still performs this piece. When I saw it in person I was absolutely captivated. Easily one of the the most classic works of art in dance in my opinion
Such pain, this speaks so loudly, tears in the eyes. What a beautiful and concise way to sum up this feeling. One of our all-time favourites. (Reading the comments- of course, this is not for everyone. But for those who have exprienced what this woman expresses, you understand.!)
I love how synchronized she was with the music. It was as if her dancing and the score were one. Pure artistry. Also if you like this, check out some Martha Graham!
here because florence welch listed mary wigman and especially hexentanz as an inspiration for the music video for heaven is here and honestly i am so fascinated and freaked out at the same time wow
Amazing video. Do you have a year? This dance premiered in 1929 so assume the film was after that. Some of the comments are so disturbing to me. Sad to me that people do not recognize art history when they see it. Wigman was the earliest Modern dancer (her work predated Graham, Humphrey, Weidman and Hanya Holm, who studied with her ). This is expressionism and was supposed to be intense, disturbing and dark so I'd say she achieved that very well. Seeing this for the first time after hearing about Wigman as a dance major - it is so impressive. Thank you for sharing it.
People are talking about degeneracy but you are the ones who are degenerate. She is not crazy she is dancing to express her feelings. She is trying to express her anger, her feeling of being trapped in society and how she was always oppressed. Mary Wigman made dance a way to express not just entertain. She was a true pioneer in the dance community.
carloscream Japanese movie critic Tomo Machiya said she and her dance and actual events of hers are based for the movie suspiria (2019) so you are probably right.
Honestly, I don’t get why this is so disturbing to people. It’s just a dance. Maybe I’m not phased by it because I watch a lot of stuff like this, but still, it’s just a dance.
they're starting to track in china what kind of stuff you buy at the supermarket and award social credit points based on how 'virtuous' it is- do y'all really want this type of dance to die?
holy shit man... I need to watch this for my art history class, but this freaks the hell out of me

I found the piece very impressive, and slightly disturbing but not in a bad way. Also her presence is remarkable

There are two things that dance can never be again, beautiful and cheerful.

powerful! Is the sound simultaneously recorded, or did it come after?
I love her 💘

I loath modern dance...
modern in the best. so is contemporary. and ballet.
Modern dance and art is just EUGH!!! At least it's good to laugh at though when you're feeling down ;D LOL
Rob M, unfortuntely for you not everybody thinks this is art.
Hexentanz th-cam.com/video/0TAxs9exTvQ/w-d-xo.html
compared to great historical works from europe, this cannot and should not be seen as art
You are stupid
Veronica Hernandez just like the artist you are defending makes non-art, you make non-arguments
Why should not this be seen as art? Art is not only beautiful, art has often had the capacity to reflect emotions, certrain community trends etc...
Carmen Van Puyenbroeck compare this to any Renaissance work and you can see future historians will be laughing at what we saw as art
performance theory dawg you're short
This is garbage. I don’t think this should be considered art at all
JRoma89 Your comment confirms it is art. Isn’t that ironic.
