I love the idea of doing a review of your art supplies, I am definitely going to do that. I am also going to choose some to focus on using for the month. This will help me pull out some things I don’t use all the time. The only thing I don’t get is wanting to use up your supplies. I don’t want mine to be gone! I like to see a dent showing I use them but not gone!
Hahaha! Oh Meg I get this! But for me I'm trying to narrow down my supplies to one or two brands or sets per type (so one or two types of acrylic gouache instead of four!)! That's why I'm trying to use up a few of my watercolor palettes and some brands of acrylic gouache! Trust me, I'd probably have a panic attack if I truly used all my materials up (and that's definitely not my goal)!! 😂🤩🤗
Funny how much this resonates with me today. I have not been buying huge amounts of art supplies but I’m already getting to where I don’t want to have lots of supplies piled up not be used. I have found out that I enjoy watching someone else use or review how an art supplies product works before I even think 🤔 of buying it. Sometimes when watching them use it I see how it looks and how I really don’t want or love it as much as I thought I had. Thanks for sharing this this inspirational video!
I'm so glad it came at a good time for you!! I also love watching reviews, I just get SO tempted! That's why I like watching reviews of stuff I already have and get re-energized about them!!
@@CreatingCuteArt That’s a great idea. I also do a special swatch book for my art supplies, paints, colored pencils, watercolor pencils, markers, graphite pencils, and keep a list of my favorite watercolor paper brands and sketchbooks.
Fab video! I have different brands of colored pencils so I’ve been down the path of having similar products but from different brands. Now I’m really enjoying watercolor I am trying to avoid buying the same colors from different brands. I’m not a professional artist, I don’t have a TH-cam channel, or the space to buy the same colors but from different watercolor companies. In any case I would never be able to use them all up. I’m not even skilled enough to be able to justify the huge expense. However, I’m OK with buying different colors from different brands, but I like to take my time, and see how I progress before I buy another tube of paint. Swatching and trying to make my own DIY super granulating watercolors is my default when I want to paint, but I can’t be bothered to do something that requires more effort. 😅
I definitely didn't need different brands in the same colors but I definitely have them now 🤣In future I definitely plan to only buy my favorite of any given color rather than numerous dupes for each other!!
And of course there is an exception to the rule of Don’t Buy Any More. When you really can’t stand it, you can rationalize a driving need for something incomplete. I agree that you definitely need to acquire the missing super granulating watercolors!
I love doing that with my markers! Grabbing several and swatching them on the side of a page and letting that inspire me for a full drawing is one of my favorite things to do when out and about with some free time! 🤗❤️🤗
Currently doing just this... 1:11 Purged soooo many colors and supplies that I either never even used or barely used and didn't like! The only exception to my Watercolor Supplies freeze is paper... Ok I resonate so much with this comment! Definitely the pandemic time frame is when I went a bit overboard with the shopping, too! I would actually do anything for a printable/downloadable coloring book of your work! With your children’s book illustration, have you been proposed to do one by a publisher ever?
@@CreatingCuteArt One of the children books which I illustrated last year was turned into a coloring book as well. But I am working on a self publishing coloring book as I already mentioned in some of my videos and I want to make it available as a downloadable digital coloring book too, for those who will want to print it on other kind of papers. :)
Inventory is always great. I need to atop buying....as I just took advantage of the Schmincke sale today. 😩 you can't put Schmincke and "sale" and I not go well helllooooo there. Swatching is beyond relaxing to me. I'm still working on my super granulation palette I want to make. Oooh I love what you've already done in the Rita book!
Ok I too was extremely tempted by the Schmincke sale but I just reassured myself that if there is a sale now, there should be another sale later and later I will have used more of my supplies so I can justify it more easily! 😂🤗❤️ Thank you for showing the book it is SO gorgeous and I'm loving it!!
Sigh all is lost here. Making a shopping list now. Have you seen Daniel Smith's Hematite Violet Genuine? Just went through all of Kim Crick's Daniel Smith swatches-never do that!!! Will now inventory all the DS granulating colors I already have.🤪 Edited-what is that gold pen? See I'm hopeless. Again-I am really good at donating my unwanted supplies to a local school art teacher!
That's awesome! That's my weakness (actually culling and donating instead of convincing myself I'll really use them at some point). The gold pen is a uniball signo gold pen that I got at the Guiry's art store! It's SO good :) no I haven't seen that color yet but you're right that watching Kimberly Crick is dangerous for no shop times! 🤣

It’s nice to hear it though sometimes I need to hear use what you have before you get more! Hope your trip was super amazing! I hope we get to see the last of your 3 in your acrylic gouache. What brand of gouache is your favorite to work with?
So far the Holbein and the W&N gouache has been fabulous, with the sole exception of the Windsor & Newton primary set. The primary colors (other than white!) weren't as good as the other colors (and they do have a huge range). Like their perylene maroon is giving me LIFE but their primary red is bleh. I haven't tried the Schmincke brand yet and the queen of gouache, Sarah Burns Studio, says that's her favorite above all the others I've tried, so it's on my list to try that brand as I use up my H and W&N tubes!!
@@CreatingCuteArt I have purchased some Windsor and Newton but not any primary’s. So fingers crossed they’re amazing. I’ve been waiting to get the wet pallet but have yet to get it. I’m so excited to try them though so I may just use them straight out the tube.
@@mekagooden4915 definitely start with out of the tube! The palette is fun for me but definitely not a requirement:) I am obsessed with the W&N olive green, Cyprus green, Naples Yellow, raw sienna, and perylene violet, so I am sure your colors will be fire! I hope to see what you make on Instagram!! 🤗❤️🤗
@@CreatingCuteArt the little colors I picked out was yellow ochre, red ochre, cadmium free orange, sap green, pale rose blush, and I guess I did get a primary blue. Wonder if I can exchange it. Oh I love to get that purple.
This was so informative, thank you! I definitely needed this video, since I'm ALWAYS feeling the urge to get new art supplies (I come across a new medium/technique and I'm instantly like 'omg I need this in my life' lol) Another issue I have is I'm too scared to use up my stuff because of this weird fear of 'wasting it', so hopefully these tips should help me out!
I love the idea of a swatch book. I’m convinced buying art supplies is kind of like the joke most crocheters tell about their yarn stash. “Buying (yarn) is a totally different hobby than actually using.” LOL. I’m kind of joking and sadly kind of not - at least for me. I’m moving my stuff to a new “my room” and I’m going to apply most of your tips. Just getting things separated so I can find everything with ease will help me not end up with duplicates.
I've definitely ended up with dupes (and then I add one of them to my travel bag to use up a bit faster!), and I always feel silly! Like I have literally no excuse! But it's so true, they are totally different hobbies and I didn't mean to take the buying hobby on but here I am, fully entrenched in it!
I love this video but I only have one question. I have a lot of art supplies, I got rid of all the ones that doesn’t bring me joy. But I have heart problems and Rheumatoid Arthritis which leave me fatigue most days. What would be your suggestion on how to get started making art? I found that since my family are not into art it’s hard for me to get started. My daughters is a combination of drawing and writing stories. But since they are all adults I am alone a lot.
This is such a wonderful question. I would definitely start with building a daily art habit by keeping it small (especially with your arthritis). You could set a goal to draw or paint for 10 minutes a day. You could either aim for quick complete pieces, or to just do 10 minutes of work on a larger piece and just watch it come together slowly. If that doesn't fully scratch your art itch, you could slowly move the time frame up to 30 minutes or eventually an hour, or you could add additional ten minute slots at different times of day (like 10 min before breakfast, 10 minutes after lunch, 10 minutes before bed). If you need ideas on what to paint or draw, let me know!! ❤️❤️❤️
@@CreatingCuteArt Yes thank you for your help. I would love to have ideas. I was able to paint a stamp today but I feel like I could do more. I tried to draw a landscape but my hand started to hurt and I was in tears because I wanted to paint something other than stamps.
@@alexandriadesrameaux7208 I'm so sorry, I honestly don't know how I would deal with that and I am so sorry you are going through it. ❤️ I would suggest you lay down a solid background color (like burnt sienna or grey or a murky green) and set it aside to dry for a while. Then whenever you're feeling better, make some marks with a pencil to indicate whatever landscape you want to make (a wavy horizontal line for a hill, some verticals for trees, a loop for a lake), and set aside for a while. They come back and fill in some of the shapes with your preferred color for that layer (a blue for the lake, some browns for tree trunks, some other color of green for the hills). Just take it in short bursts of work and set aside so you are never working on it too long in a row. This will have the added benefit of giving you time to think about color and composition and feel unrushed!!
@@CreatingCuteArt Great idea, I need to slow down. I am soooo excited that I am forgetting to rest my hands. Thank you for your suggestions. I was to close to the problem to see a solution. Thank you so much.
I try not to watch hauls and reviews from artists who are constantly buying new things because they make me want to buy. It’s the same with makeup. I stopped following a lot of beauty creators because they could literally sell me dirty napkins. I’ll watch art reviews on things I want to buy or am interested in but when it’s like, “new palette!” I avoid cuz I love palettes (art and makeup palettes!). And I want to buy. Lord help me lol

But I also feel torn because when I do indeed buy new art supplies, my art family here are really the only ones who "get it" and understand my excitement over a new palette or sketchbook!
This is so good.. I had to watch again.. just a good reminder to use up what you have for sure..!!
I'm so glad it's giving you inspiration!!
@@CreatingCuteArt 👍🤩
❤️ I love doing swatches and the color wheels that I learned how to do with your video!
Oh my gosh that is so awesome!! That seriously brings me so much joy to hear Noraliz!
Love how organ you are from art supplies to the swatch book 😁🎨 I wanted to pet all the fuzzy animals live In Your sketch book lol
Haha! Thank you! I do aim for snuggliness in my animal art! 🤗❤️
And of course there is an exception to the rule of Don’t Buy Any More. When you really can’t stand it, you can rationalize a driving need for something incomplete. I agree that you definitely need to acquire the missing super granulating watercolors!
There's always an exception, of course!
I love swatching too. when Im in a slump or need inspiration, I swatch trios that go together
I love doing that with my markers! Grabbing several and swatching them on the side of a page and letting that inspire me for a full drawing is one of my favorite things to do when out and about with some free time! 🤗❤️🤗
Currently doing just this... 1:11
Purged soooo many colors and supplies that I either never even used or barely used and didn't like! The only exception to my Watercolor Supplies freeze is paper... I paint a LOT and go through so much of it. I honestly think I have Watercolor Art stuff to last me the next 20+ years! Okay back to the video lol!
Lol indeed!! I love that. You're probably right on how long your supplies will last you, I love that you're going through paper and just making a ton of art!! Enjoy!!
Love this video. Really good ideas xxx
Thank you so much, Louise!
I love videos like this! Been looking ways to motivate myself on using art supplies that I already own.
I'm always looking for that, too, and figured I would share what I have so far in hopes of getting even more ideas in the comments!!😁❤️👍🤗
I just found your channel and I resonate with this video so much
Ok I resonate so much with this comment! Definitely the pandemic time frame is when I went a bit overboard with the shopping, too! I think it made sense for that time but I really let it become a sort of habit and I want to break that. A no buy year is so impressive! I’ve done one no buy month (and it was February!) 🤣🤗❤️
@@CreatingCuteArt I am binging your videos right now and saw the march haul after the february no buy ;D
So many good videos. I guess I'll binge a bit more
I definitely over bought these past two years. Now I don’t buy anything. If there is something I think I really want I will write about it and put it on a list. My plan is at the end of the year to review the list and then decide.
@@megperry5586 That's an awesome plan!! Maybe I can do that month by month (I'm less disciplined than you 😂🤗😆)!!
Maggie, another great video - thank you! I'm going to bookmark it and watch it again to note your tips. Even though I only have things I use, there are some great creative ideas in the mix that I can use and also, pass on to my students. Again, thank you!
I'm so glad you found it helpful, and I hope your students enjoy, too! I did a one on one session with a six-year-old via Zoom and she loved swatching, very interesting to me what art stuff different kids enjoy!!
I am doing the coloring book part too, using up some of my older art supplies. 😊 and is very relaxing and satisfying
That's what I'm going to do then! Will keep my eye on your Instagram for any announcements! 🤗❤️
absolutely love this message, Maggie! Thank you for this... join you
I'm so glad my friend!! Thank you for watching!!
I really enjoyed this video. Lots of good advice! Thank you!
So glad you found it helpful!! 🤗🤗
Great tips!!!
Thank you!!
@@CreatingCuteArt Guess who has said gold pen & forget she had it. Have not forgotten black granulating colors-it's planting time! Working on a pollinator garden. We have always done monarchs but now I'm broadening my horizons!
Hahaha!
I loved this video!! Definitely struggles a lot of us face. I have certainly noticed that my art supply buy has increased hugely since I started my youtube channel, even though it's still really new! Of course, it wasn't difficult to convince me to buy art supplies before that, either. 😅 To keep my stash from getting overwhelming, I am already considering how I can use things up, and what I have that I should gift to others! Hahahaha also: but not domino pizza! You always sneak some goofy thing into your videos that really makes me laugh.
I'm glad you got a chuckle!! 🤣 It is truly the hardest thing to stop or slow because it's such a guaranteed happiness to order, look forward to, and then receive art supplies. All the fun we can have with them! But I just feel like when I have too many I can't enjoy them all because I literally don't have time to get to them all!!
You have no idea how much I needed to hear this! Literally 😆 although I do want to grow my collection as well.
Oh I loved the pale rose blush!! Yes you will enjoy, what an awesome palette :)!!
This was so informative, thank you! I definitely needed this video, since I'm ALWAYS feeling the urge to get new art supplies (I come across a new medium/technique and I'm instantly like 'omg I need this in my life' lol)
Another issue I have is I'm too scared to use up my stuff because of this weird fear of 'wasting it', so hopefully these tips should help me out!
I'm actually talking about these exact issues in my Sunday video, I struggle with this, too! I'm glad we have people to talk to about it on ArtTube!!
@@CreatingCuteArt Oooo nice! I'll be on the lookout for it then! :D
Thank you so much.
great video... ; )
Thank you my sweet friend! So glad you enjoyed it 🤗😊
Great ideas!! Thank you. Is your swatch book the Arteza watercolor one 8.25 square?
Yes indeed! I've filled four so far and this swatch book one is my fifth!!
@@CreatingCuteArt Thanks! I will be ordering some!! I’ve filled one of the 5.5 x 5.5 ones and I LOVE them!
I need to help in how to stop buying new art supplies. Please help😁 thank you for your video I appreciate it
I always feel that way, too! I'm glad you enjoyed it, Dawn :)
I so felt this comment (and I laughed out loud at the dirty napkin!), I definitely feel this way, too, as a consumer of ArtTube. But I also feel torn because when I do indeed buy new art supplies, my art family here are really the only ones who "get it" and understand my excitement over a new palette or sketchbook! So I just share my purchases but also my struggles with genuinely wanting to buy less and use what I have. Thank you for watching and for the great comment 🤗👍
we cant afford to spend any money on art supplies, and I have way too much that I will use before I die lol
At least you have enough to keep you busy 😂🤣❤️
true and uni i was always telling people ask me first before you go buy supplies
