I'm such a nerd, I have a paint inventory spreadsheet. I'm working on a marker/colored pencil one as well. I'll pull up the sheet on my phone when I'm in the store, and make sure I'm not getting what I don't need. (I will buy the same blue colors over and over again because it makes me happy buying blues! I'm a simple person really.... lol.) Plus seeing the NUMBER totals of paint tubes puts it into perspective. (I have totals on everything not just by brand but type across the sheet.) Love everything you do!!

Ok this is totally genius and I'm pinning this comment because it should have been in the video. I have an excel, too! But I never thought of individual paint names/pencil colors, you are so right --not just to avoid accidentally repurchasing but also just to be like WOO maybe I need to take it easy on this supply 🤣😂🤗❤️

@@CreatingCuteArt lol 🤣🤣 I love my spreadsheet! I found I was constantly buying the same colors because I would see them and go, "oooh, you're pretty!" Then go home and realize I had that exact same thought 3 times already. It also helps to see "I have HOW MANY tubes of hard body acrylics??? Wait what?" I have to inventory my colored pencils and markers. Especially when they have sales it's nice to be able to take full advantage by only buying stuff I actually need. Plus I can highlight when a tube is running out so I don't start a painting of a sunset and realize all my yellow is dead. 😋

Great minds think alike....I too also have spreadsheets that I created for most of my supplies...still working on my pencils as I have a ton! I created mine on my Google drive so that I can access or edit from any device. Its really helped so I don't purchase the same paints over and over. However I tend to want to own every pigment lol...so at least I can purchase those if and when I find a good deal or a rare pigment.

Glad to know I’m not the only one looking for positive reviews about products I already own to get extra happy/excited. But yeah I really prefer to avoid any negativity about supplies I already own when possible as I’m trying to be happy and motivated once I already own a thing. These are good tips.
I’d add using dice charts. Make and use random dice charts. For example a chart of media ex; d6) 1= watercolour 2= gouache 3= acryl gouache 4= ink 5= coloured pencil 6= graphite/charcoal. Etc. Add some randomness for surprise. I have many charts including for creature design, plants, animals, character design, and backgrounds. Some really useful ones are colours, human eye colours, types of clothing, types of animal (mammal, bird, fish, reptile, etc.), hairstyles, mythical creatures, etc.
I also advise specific lists such as random prompts for a monthly challenge; roll for which is next. ( 3 d10 lists roll 1d6 for which list 1-2= list 1 3-4 = list 2 5-6 = list 3 the 10 options and roll a 10 sided die to determine which one. Re-roll or replace used options as you go!
Get DnD dice (TTRPG) d = dice the number is the number of sides on the die d4, d6, D8, d10, d12. You can also roll 2 d10 to get and use d% for a number between 1 and 100. Some d10’s have 10,20, 30. 0 on a d10 is 10.
    Hope this helps someone!

I wanted to use neglected supplies in April and I tackled it by treating it like those subscription art boxes.
So late in March, I curated small sets of markers and paints into color palettes and put those into boxes/bags. And then the next month, I opened them again and used the supplies I'd set aside. It was really fun and I will definitely do it again! I got through 10/12 of the sets I'd curated and used barely touched POSCA markers, Karin markers, and Holbein gouache, for example.

I am a HUGE journaler but it has never occurred to me to really write about a new art supply. I have sort of done that, but again doing it in a dedicated swatch book is so smart. Also, I'm really glad you touched on the guilt when you have art supplies you don't use, and being willing to let go of or replace those things with things that do make you happy. Fab video! I have different brands of colored pencils so I’ve been down the path of having similar products but from different brands. Now I’m really enjoying watercolor I am trying to avoid buying the same colors from different brands. I’m not a professional artist, I don’t have a TH-cam channel, or the space to buy the same colors but from different watercolor companies. In any case I would never be able to use them all up. I’m not even skilled enough to be able to justify the huge expense. However, I’m OK with buying different colors from different brands, but I like to take my time, and see how I progress before I buy another tube of paint. This was so informative, thank you! I definitely needed this video, since I'm ALWAYS feeling the urge to get new art supplies (I come across a new medium/technique and I'm instantly like 'omg I need this in my life' lol)
Another issue I have is I'm too scared to use up my stuff because of this weird fear of 'wasting it', so hopefully these tips should help me out!

I love the idea of a swatch book. I’m convinced buying art supplies is kind of like the joke most crocheters tell about their yarn stash. “Buying (yarn) is a totally different hobby than actually using.” LOL. I’m kind of joking and sadly kind of not - at least for me. I’m moving my stuff to a new “my room” and I’m going to apply most of your tips. Just getting things separated so I can find everything with ease will help me not end up with duplicates.

I've definitely ended up with dupes (and then I add one of them to my travel bag to use up a bit faster!), and I always feel silly! Like I have literally no excuse! But it's so true, they are totally different hobbies and I didn't mean to take the buying hobby on but here I am, fully entrenched in it!

I love this video but I only have one question. I have a lot of art supplies, I got rid of all the ones that doesn’t bring me joy. But I have heart problems and Rheumatoid Arthritis which leave me fatigue most days. What would be your suggestion on how to get started making art? I found that since my family are not into art it’s hard for me to get started. My daughters is a combination of drawing and writing stories. But since they are all adults I am alone a lot.

This is such a wonderful question. I would definitely start with building a daily art habit by keeping it small (especially with your arthritis). You could set a goal to draw or paint for 10 minutes a day. You could either aim for quick complete pieces, or to just do 10 minutes of work on a larger piece and just watch it come together slowly. If that doesn't fully scratch your art itch, you could slowly move the time frame up to 30 minutes or eventually an hour, or you could add additional ten minute slots at different times of day (like 10 min before breakfast, 10 minutes after lunch, 10 minutes before bed). If you need ideas on what to paint or draw, let me know!! ❤️❤️❤️

@@CreatingCuteArt Yes thank you for your help. I would love to have ideas. I was able to paint a stamp today but I feel like I could do more. I tried to draw a landscape but my hand started to hurt and I was in tears because I wanted to paint something other than stamps.

@@alexandriadesrameaux7208 I'm so sorry, I honestly don't know how I would deal with that and I am so sorry you are going through it. ❤️ I would suggest you lay down a solid background color (like burnt sienna or grey or a murky green) and set it aside to dry for a while. Then whenever you're feeling better, make some marks with a pencil to indicate whatever landscape you want to make (a wavy horizontal line for a hill, some verticals for trees, a loop for a lake), and set aside for a while. They come back and fill in some of the shapes with your preferred color for that layer (a blue for the lake, some browns for tree trunks, some other color of green for the hills). Just take it in short bursts of work and set aside so you are never working on it too long in a row. This will have the added benefit of giving you time to think about color and composition and feel unrushed!!

I try not to watch hauls and reviews from artists who are constantly buying new things because they make me want to buy. It’s the same with makeup. I stopped following a lot of beauty creators because they could literally sell me dirty napkins. I’ll watch art reviews on things I want to buy or am interested in but when it’s like, “new palette!” I avoid cuz I love palettes (art and makeup palettes!). And I want to buy. Lord help me lol

    • @CreatingCuteArt
      @CreatingCuteArt  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I so felt this comment (and I laughed out loud at the dirty napkin!), I definitely feel this way, too, as a consumer of ArtTube. But I also feel torn because when I do indeed buy new art supplies, my art family here are really the only ones who "get it" and understand my excitement over a new palette or sketchbook! So I just share my purchases but also my struggles with genuinely wanting to buy less and use what I have. Thank you for watching and for the great comment 🤗👍
