As a DM I absolutely love these moments. I find it absolutely hilarious when the players just start babbling when they see the big bad. This reminds me of the time, I play digitally on roll20, that I used the Blue Eyes Ultimate dragon as the token for a custom hydra monster I made. When my friends saw it they freaked the hell out.
Scott finding out that Kylo is Aeofel pretty much shut Scott down for a few minutes. He's certainly very reserved the rest of the episode as well. I wonder if Chris asked Wil's permission to the character?

I agree with the first part of your comment, but the "don't complain if you can't do it better" thing doesn't hold water. Think about it, if you spend $200 on a meal in a restaurant and the food is undercooked, imagine if the chef just says, "you can't have an opinion unless you can't do it better". When someone becomes a singer, comedian, writer or whatever, their output is fair game for criticism, no matter how "qualified" the critic is.
True, i see your point. I just wrote it more cause the comments feel like watching a soccer / football match. You will always have people who will yell criticisim towards the players, and then you become curious how they would be doing if they switched places. So yeah i do admit the second part of my comment got muddied, but these wednesday D and D sessions are one of the things i really look forward too everyweek cause it makes me laugh and have fun, also i don't really have a D and D group of my own, i have played it few times but it just fell apart the whole time, especially when trying to actually organize a D and D session.
because when you see a person who partly wrote the basic rules for 5e and uses the book while playing skips some of the rules, or changes them is kinda weird for ppl who care about both fun AND the rules. especially when there is a detail to the delayed fireball, which increases the dmg for every turn it sits, which would help them out

+1n20DnD yes they all are, however I can relate to Mr. Rothfuss due to his reactions. Binwin was a tad overconfident at the sight of the dragon, but I'm happy everyone stayed true to their character. The rival element with Dran Enterprises was fun and entertaining. This is like the empire strikes back of AI!
Wow. Lots of negative comments here. Not just about the rules but people posting against Wil Wheaton. Such a great episode too. You all have to admit it, Chris Perkins runs amazingly interesting D&D games for these guys. Regardless of rules. Sometimes a DM just has to let things slide to move on through the game to make it stay interesting. You pause more and more to look up stuff and you'll start boring the players (and the audience - let's not forget!) Scanning down below... wow. All the hate against Wil Wheaton. It's just crazy. If anything, in my opinion, he's a better player than any one of these guys because he likes to actually roleplay it more than any of them do. Go back and check these Acquisitions Inc. videos and then go and watch a handful of "Critical Role" episodes to see what I mean. When the players roleplay it, that's WAY more interesting in my opinion. Yeah, I love the jokes these guys here crack now and then but if you want to really love the game, start watching a group that totally roleplays it. It's AMAZING. Not a slam against Acquinsitions Inc. because it's a different style and I truly love both and won't ever put one bunch up over the other because it's apples and oranges to me. If I want laughs though, I'll always look to these guys right here. If I want to get engrossed deeply in story, I'll go over there. To further that note on why people should give Wil a chance, take the TV series "Elementary" for example. I'm a HUGE fan of anything Sherlock Holmes and when I first found out Lucy Liu was Watson in that series I HATED it. Not because she's a woman but because I didn't think she fit the role but you know what? I forced myself to watch through a couple seasons and actually grew to love the show regardless. I think that's what people have to realize. Don't judge an actor or player by your first impression or feelings. You might be surprised just how wrong you were and I think that especially goes with this whole thread after thread of hate towards Wil Wheaton. Give the man a chance already. I see comments that people say he's annoying. Oh no. I think it's funny because it can be WAAAAAAY worse. Imagine them inviting Pee Wee Herman in the bunch. They just don't care enough about the rules tbh. There was a turn where Omin does mass healing word + attack + war cleric bonus attack, but things like that aren't whats as important to this group. They're doing it for the story and the fun of the game.
Which is funny since Perkins WORKS for Wizards, and D&D specifically (I forget what he does exactly... besides DM games for people like this... man you should see some of the other games he has DMed in the past).
For Chris it's definitely that he's a bit flexible for the most part, but he's been outright wrong on things like proficiency bonuses for saves and tools.
Part of it is the fault of the designers though(which Perkins isn't). They removed the Minor action from 4e because they felt it made people too focused on the action economy, but the bonus action is basically just the same thing but with much more nebulous rules.
Can you imagine if they brought out Will Wheaton for the last 20 minutes of the last episode? That would've been so sweet lol. That reveal also makes the offering Viari a ride up the mountain and calling him an asshole when he says no so much better
Really, really enjoyed this series guys. The PAX events are great but the extra time provided by these sessions makes it so much better. Would really love to see a continuation after PAX. Good job.
tpk would have been more than justified, players didnt take the battle serious enough to either retreat or go all in(e.g. Jim hesitated to use the dbf scroll) probably cause they expected Chris would not wipe them out, confirmed by dragon not finishing his work.
I was good with the White's behaviour. White's, being more feral, attack first no questions asked, then freeze and store food. It only stopped to eat when it had searched the whole area and finding no more enemies immediately fed.
TPK is a tool in a DMs belt. While I agree they knew they were going against Frost Giants and a damn White Dragon without purchasing any cold resist or plan accordingly however Legendary White Dragon plus all those Giants were he'll and gone challenge level. Almost guaranteeing a TPK which is bad dungeon craft. They've had seriously issues historically judging what level of a challenge they can defeat
I think Chris took an opportunity to give them a chance, basically. You could see when he made the unicorn teleport Jim out of there, that he probably thought that he could at least save one of them even if the others died. If Viari wouldn't have critted on his saving throw, the three left behind would've probably been judged as dead. I think that part of it is making a good show, but as a DM, I think it makes for a more pleasant game to also give your players a fighting chance if they're at death's door, especially if it's as a result of rolling really poorly. I mean, even if he actually critted on his death save, the realistic thing would've been for the dragon to just claw them all once just to make sure that they were dead - but that would've made the players felt bummed out, after the joy of coming back to life from a clutch roll. Sometimes you just have to feel the situation. Just because you're running the game doesn't mean that you have to be cruel about it.
I think they were supposed to pit the giants against the dragon, but instead they ended up fighting all the giants and the dragon, with no rest in between! And they lost almost all their npc allies against the giants :( They need to go back and finish the job after they deal with Aeofel.
I think a great addition for the viewers would be to add the AC and HP under each portrait. This information can make certain rolls more dramatic for the viewer. cool
Viari should have leaned on some of his greater skills. Creativity is everything in this game. Dragons are vain. He should have quickly written a ballard praising the dragon and his vast plunder to distract him while others went in for the kill. I love this series and hope it continues, but they have to brush up on their skills and get more creative like they have done in other ventures. I love it when they stump the DM. This time he had them running.
Maybe I am the only one, but I personally really liked Wil Wheaton in this because yes he may have been very overexaggerative but he added some real emotion and you could tell he really cared about his character. I personally like his style of humor along with the others and it wouldn't be that bad, in my opinion, if he came back.
Towards the end of the live shows he was getting a bit obnoxious so I can definitely understand why people might have issues with him. I still think he managed to balance it with some good humor so I wouldn't mind if he returned for a live show.
I agree he tried to bring some actual role playing to a role playing game. While these guys tend to all talk in the third person & mistake jokes for role playing. While i'm all for humor in a game having a bit of story to hang an adventure off just makes it even more exciting.
if you're watching AI for drama role playing you're watching the wrong show. watch critical role for a good dramatic role playing D&D show. this is and always has been a comedic show.
If I recall correctly, the Raise Dead singing by Viari only worked on the round after the victim had died - which has long passed by the time Viari frisked Owin.

Just finished binge watching this series, saw the credits say that they will be playing live at PAX on Sep 4th, look at the calendar and it's Sep 4th...... my body is ready.
I know I'm stating the obvious but isn't Viari apart of the main cast? Like really? His animation sprite doesn't star in the intro sequence... only towards the end. Maybe because he wasn't apart of the original crew but he is still a great addition to the cast.
It's not really fair to Pat given he not only plays these Acquisition Inc. games but even promotes them in the off time by being on other D&D related shows like Critical Role. He does more promotion for Acquisition Inc. then the other members of the show, other than of course Chris Perkins.
It's all part of the role play. This isn't about Pat and Jerry, it's about Viari and Omin and how Omin is the kind of boss who's only thinking about the bottom line and doesn't like to spend money on things like promotions, so Viari is the perpetual not-quite-employee.
It's definitely Aeofel, even the term Kylo Ren. Chris brought up lay on hands (so paladin), casting healing spells with Melora as a deity, and with the body type being elvish, it has to be Aeofel. Oath of Vengeance is the closest you will get to the Avenger from 4th.

It's an entertainment show. If you came to watch a group of battle-ready min-maxers who know the rules inside out use preparation and superior tactics to overwhelm superior forces, you came to the wrong game.

You can't. This encounter was way over their heads. If they were fully rested, they might have had a small chance, but after expending a lot of resources fighting giants and orcs they didn't stand a chance.
This pretty much felt like the near tpk they had with Morgan Webb a few years back. It wasn't really intended to kill the characters but set up the story for the PAX stream.

I still love the fact that 98-100 on wand of wonder is petrify. If he had hit the dragon with that, I would've lost it.
The dragon would've just chosen to succced the saving throw.

Isn't Jim's firebolt 2d10 at level 8? Being frightened when you're a Rogue sucks, it cancels out sneak attack since you have disadvantage.
None of them know the rules very well(that includes Perkins).
They just don't care enough about the rules tbh. There was a turn where Omin does mass healing word + attack + war cleric bonus attack, but things like that aren't whats as important to this group.
They're doing it for the story and the fun of the game.
Which is funny since Perkins WORKS for Wizards, and D&D specifically (I forget what he does exactly... besides DM games for people like this... man you should see some of the other games he has DMed in the past).
For Chris it's definitely that he's a bit flexible for the most part, but he's been outright wrong on things like proficiency bonuses for saves and tools.
Part of it is the fault of the designers though(which Perkins isn't). They removed the Minor action from 4e because they felt it made people too focused on the action economy, but the bonus action is basically just the same thing but with much more nebulous rules.
Can you imagine if they brought out Will Wheaton for the last 20 minutes of the last episode? That would've been so sweet lol. That reveal also makes the offering Viari a ride up the mountain and calling him an asshole when he says no so much better

tpk would have been more than justified,
players didnt take the battle serious enough to either retreat or go all in(e.g. Jim hesitated to use the dbf scroll)
probably cause they expected Chris would not wipe them out, confirmed by dragon not finishing his work.
It's entertainment, it's not meant to be serious. The would've likely took it more seriously if they were actually playing not making a show.
I was good with the White's behaviour. White's, being more feral, attack first no questions asked, then freeze and store food. It only stopped to eat when it had searched the whole area and finding no more enemies immediately fed.
TPK is a tool in a DMs belt. While I agree they knew they were going against Frost Giants and a damn White Dragon without purchasing any cold resist or plan accordingly however Legendary White Dragon plus all those Giants were he'll and gone challenge level. Almost guaranteeing a TPK which is bad dungeon craft. They've had seriously issues historically judging what level of a challenge they can defeat
I think Chris took an opportunity to give them a chance, basically. You could see when he made the unicorn teleport Jim out of there, that he probably thought that he could at least save one of them even if the others died. If Viari wouldn't have critted on his saving throw, the three left behind would've probably been judged as dead.
I think that part of it is making a good show, but as a DM, I think it makes for a more pleasant game to also give your players a fighting chance if they're at death's door, especially if it's as a result of rolling really poorly. I mean, even if he actually critted on his death save, the realistic thing would've been for the dragon to just claw them all once just to make sure that they were dead - but that would've made the players felt bummed out, after the joy of coming back to life from a clutch roll.
Sometimes you just have to feel the situation. Just because you're running the game doesn't mean that you have to be cruel about it.
I think they were supposed to pit the giants against the dragon, but instead they ended up fighting all the giants and the dragon, with no rest in between! And they lost almost all their npc allies against the giants :( They need to go back and finish the job after they deal with Aeofel.
I think a great addition for the viewers would be to add the AC and HP under each portrait. This information can make certain rolls more dramatic for the viewer. cool

Viari should have leaned on some of his greater skills. Creativity is everything in this game. Dragons are vain. He should have quickly written a ballard praising the dragon and his vast plunder to distract him while others went in for the kill. I love this series and hope it continues, but they have to brush up on their skills and get more creative like they have done in other ventures. I love it when they stump the DM. This time he had them running.

This is why Chris Perkins is top dog in D&D. He can have the players and the audience on the edge of their seats.
Maybe I am the only one, but I personally really liked Wil Wheaton in this because yes he may have been very overexaggerative but he added some real emotion and you could tell he really cared about his character. I personally like his style of humor along with the others and it wouldn't be that bad, in my opinion, if he came back.

Towards the end of the live shows he was getting a bit obnoxious so I can definitely understand why people might have issues with him. I still think he managed to balance it with some good humor so I wouldn't mind if he returned for a live show.

I agree he tried to bring some actual role playing to a role playing game. While these guys tend to all talk in the third person & mistake jokes for role playing. While i'm all for humor in a game having a bit of story to hang an adventure off just makes it even more exciting.
if you're watching AI for drama role playing you're watching the wrong show. watch critical role for a good dramatic role playing D&D show. this is and always has been a comedic show.

If I recall correctly, the Raise Dead singing by Viari only worked on the round after the victim had died - which has long passed by the time Viari frisked Owin.

Just finished binge watching this series, saw the credits say that they will be playing live at PAX on Sep 4th, look at the calendar and it's Sep 4th...... my body is ready.
I know I'm stating the obvious but isn't Viari apart of the main cast? Like really? His animation sprite doesn't star in the intro sequence... only towards the end. Maybe because he wasn't apart of the original crew but he is still a great addition to the cast.
Omin promoted him to sub-employee, he's almost part of the company now.
It's not really fair to Pat given he not only plays these Acquisition Inc. games but even promotes them in the off time by being on other D&D related shows like Critical Role. He does more promotion for Acquisition Inc. then the other members of the show, other than of course Chris Perkins.
It's all part of the role play. This isn't about Pat and Jerry, it's about Viari and Omin and how Omin is the kind of boss who's only thinking about the bottom line and doesn't like to spend money on things like promotions, so Viari is the perpetual not-quite-employee.
Aeofel forgot Wheaton's law, big time. Get your acid pools ready, mr Perkins, he deserves a sour surprise.

It's definitely Aeofel, even the term Kylo Ren. Chris brought up lay on hands (so paladin), casting healing spells with Melora as a deity, and with the body type being elvish, it has to be Aeofel. Oath of Vengeance is the closest you will get to the Avenger from 4th.

Similarly Viari could have been doing bardic inspiration but didnt. And the one time he hit the Dragon with his dagger, he forgot about his sneak attack. But mistakes happen. It's an entertainment show. If you came to watch a group of battle-ready min-maxers who know the rules inside out use preparation and superior tactics to overwhelm superior forces, you came to the wrong game.

Who is Aeofel? I've only been following Acquisitions Inc from their trip with the Halister Statue and I can't remember if there was an Aeofel.

this was great to watch, so many great moments, always played computer rpgs but never the real thing and this series made me wanna start. please make a season 2.

You can't. This encounter was way over their heads. If they were fully rested, they might have had a small chance, but after expending a lot of resources fighting giants and orcs they didn't stand a chance.
This pretty much felt like the near tpk they had with Morgan Webb a few years back. It wasn't really intended to kill the characters but set up the story for the PAX stream.
I sometimes wish I would live in the US so that I can attend to this type of events!!! Dammit!!!! Great show guys!!!
