A slightly different video from me, because I think we need to address the mess that is the latest two CPU launches. Are you guys holding out for X3D, CPU price drops or something else? Let me know 🫣
I've just built a new system with an Intel Core i9-12900K. Price/performance works for me. Installed it straight out of the box with no patches or other issues. No overheating or throttling with a Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler. The i9 was AU$522/US$343 from Amazon AU. (Creator build)
AMD did everyone dirty by rising prices for the 7800X3D massively. They knew nobody would buy the 9800X3D at a price of around $500 when the 78003D was still $350. I also wonder why anyone would upgrade to the 9800X3D if there are no new GPUs from Nvidia yet.
It was interesting to see your comparisons of compiled data. I'm not trying to keep up with the latest CPU, but still enjoyed your informative content.
Main reason why i Upgraded to AM5, i heard that the 9800X3D was overclockable back in May, so i jumped on a x670 Board from Gigabyte for 140 bucks, and used a 7500F for now along with 64GB of Ram at 6000MHz CL30. now i can upgrade next year when the chip widely available, and on sale. Patience is key.
I got myself a 7800x3d so im set for a couple of years Glad i wont be missing out alot compared to 9800x3d especially considering id probably have to wait till January to hope to get one at msrp
Getting an ultra 7 or i7 over 7800x3d is not a bad option, Because both are balanced, Like how u7/i7 are better in productivity and 7800x3d better in gaming but these both are balanced and you can get any of them and that depends on your budget
I really wish that this generation wasn't focused so much on power efficiency. Like yeah, it's cool to see it, and I'm sure it has some use somewhere, but for most people, we want performance. I think we could all care less about the fact that our CPU uses 50w less.
Totally agree. I think 14th Gen shows the dangers of what can happen when power becomes an after thought, but no performance increase on a new set of CPUs is simply not good enough
What I like to see is the combination of both, performance per watt. Intel 14th gen is powerful, but the wattage is over limit. Don't worry about performance, because we can always add cores in a CPU (or use more CPU), but the improvements in performance per watt should be the main goal.
And my guy that's the reason why intels 13-14 gen cpu got smocked because for upping thier performance they blasted the CPU with ton of power. So brands do realised thier mistake and now are trying to make stuff more efficient and more safe. But how much safe it turn out? Well we can see the new Intel cpu for that
I never make my purchases on power efficiency because more power does equal better performance. Intel is a little excessive with power, but if you want every bit of performance with AMD, you have to overclock as overclocking means more power. Even when your processor boosts, it uses more power. They are exceptions. I'll let the minimum wage peasants worry about power efficiency.
I wanted to go Intel but I'm going with the 9800X3D because I can upgrade from AM4 to AM5 for a cheap thousand dollars. All I need is a CPU, motherboard, and RAM.
Hi. There is one burning specific question I have. Is there a way to test the 'AI Denoise' feature in Lightroom Classic and compare the 285K or 265K to the AMD CPUs? The AI Denoise is currently a feature that takes the longest time for me and I use it often. With the built-in (although weak) NPU in the the Intel Ultra chips, I'm guessing there's a jump in performance with them, but I'd like to see how much of a jump. Thanks!
this would be of interest to me also. currently on 9th gen and looking to do an upgrade, appreciating anything will give me an uplift but Intel with their issues allegedly fixed v 9800x3d
@@satiyorum from a quick Google, the denoise feature relies on the GPU more so. I use it a lot too, but I'm getting that RTX 5080 soon, so fingers crossed it quicker!
im building a new pc soon to replace my old fossil build. the i9 12900k is selling for under $300 usd now. im waiting for nvidia to drop their 50 series before i pull the trigger on the gpu. my question is if i pair a 4080 super (or something with similar performance) with a 12900k, will i be missing out on a significant amount of performance while gaming at 1440p?
I have a feeling I'll skip Core Ultra 9 I've been using the 13900K for a year and a little more, I see no reason and more performance to replace with a weaker processor, a new motherboard and a lot more money

I'll humor you, for some reason this was recommended to me. I am in the market for a full rebuild but I think I've convinced myself at this point to wait for the 9950x3d.
Thankfully I got a 12700k and 3080_10G both when they came out and both at fair prices... It's still a pretty good 1440p system, thanks in part to dlss improvements over time... And with a massive undervolt on both they run cool and quiet... I'll wait at least until Nvidia 60 series are about to release and decide whether I'm going to buy a discounted 5080ti/5090 or a newer 60 series counterpart.

I am quite lucky to have gotten the 7800x3d for 369 cad and to be honest the 8% increase in games doesn’t really entice me to jump on 9800x3d. I would be save money for 5090.
Except that AMD chips are wayy over priced in my region right now.. currently marked up about +~170-200 USD (7000/9000 series) while the Intel chips (14th gen / core ultra) are marked up about (~60-90 USD). Intel chips might just be right for my use case 😂 (I mostly use my pc for AI/ML,server and VM projects while gaming at 4K on the side)
Not a disaster for AMD………..or for Intel ……….. so u are completely wrong there. Both AMD and Intel needed to reduce their CPU’s power consumption. Along with that reduction comes a corresponding reduction in performance. Pretty much a no-brainer. “With every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. Both companies saw the writing on the wall. In order not to hit that wall, they both had no choice but to reduce power. Until a new architecture or cooling solution is introduced………this will be the norm moving forward. No more big gains from one gen to the next. I kinda wish you “TH-camrs” had just a pinch of common sense. You would all see how obvious this is.
Your logic might make sense with Intel, who I agree were at the extreme limits of heat and power, but Ryzen 700 was a hardly inefficient and high temperature architecture. Your logic also discounts the fact that lots of the issues AMD and Intel have encountered are down to poor optimisations with OS versions and BIOS'. Both launches were half baked, rushed and disappointing. Happy to have a proper, adult conversation/debate about this without the need for petty insults.

When we all buy a desktop, I don't think any of us want power efficiency ahaha. If we can afford a PC which today most cost at least $1500 in the mid range and to an arm and leg then we certainly can afford to let it be power hungry. My desktop, I put it through hell as it should be put through and even my laptop, I want the fans to be screaming because I'm doing heavy loads of work on it. I know some people want it quiet and pay a lower power bill then I say then buy a chromebook. If you're gonna spend 1500 to 2500 dollars on a desktop or laptop, let it be power hungry and give us the best. For laptops, I get it, the lighter/slimmer the better at the cost of power and I'm okay with that. But, desktop, don't care, I let the fans scream or else what's the point. There should be 2 chips - one that is energy efficient and one that is power hungry for those who need it. This is why once the i9 14th gen and the 4090 is half price, that will be my last investment for a while. I have the i7 13th gen and 3080 Ti in my desktop and i7 11th gen and 3060 in my laptop.
