    I agree, the joy of just driving with your favourite music on is so good for you. I’ve been driving over fifty years and no matter what mood I’m in just driving makes me smile. From my first Austin A35 through Escorts, Vauxhall’s, Lexus, Mercedes, Range Rover & now New Defender just add to life - I’m dreading all the restrictive changes coming including electrification. I really enjoy your channel 👌🙏

    The gantry signs on Scotland's motorways often say "Drive to road conditions". I take that as green light to hit 120mph+ on a quiet morning.

    I don’t drive anywhere without Waze on. It’s saved me many points and probably my license especially on roads that I’m not familiar with. My C63 has a button that limits the cruise control to the posted limit which I also use quite frequently. It’s modern driving I’m afraid. Use it or you’ll lose it.
    To be fair, anyone who sings Coldplay songs when they’re driving is a menace and needs their license suspended immediately.

    I’m outing Cheshire police for their big money making machine. On princess parkway coming up to m60 there is a 50 - 40 - 30mph all in 300 meters tricky junction where lots happening all at once the perfect place to catch people out they are there in their van at least 4 times a week they aren’t making anything safer in fact everyone stamping on brakes is just dangerous. Thanks to waze they are noted pretty sharpish

    Totally agree with you Richard about the useless tech going into new cars. I like my cars old school, without the plethora of 'driving aids'. Keeps you on your toes getting from A to B quickly and safely, while looking out for speed traps, cyclists, pedestrians etc, and now having to dodge the potholes too. I also use back roads, rather than the main routes, where possible. I keep a couple of cans of spray mud in the boot if have to use motorways or go through large urban areas 😁

    Hi Richard. A few things. Geoff recently did a video with a retired high ranking police officer who thought the situation with speeding has swapped from safety to money generation. Harry Metcalf did a video where he talked about how all the electronic driver aids may change the supercar market. After much searching my youngest daughter has secured her dream job as an apprentice mechanic with a Ferrari and Maserati specialist.

    In Germany, if you get caught speeding on a limited Autobahn, you only get points if your 21kph over the limit. You just pay. The UK tolerance is nearly zero.
    Dont trust the assisted driving sometimes, they speed in limits.
    Live in Germany, theres a higher tolerance.

    Lane assist is crap. My Range Rover Velar crossed the on coming lane and drove into a pub car park. Think it was an alcoholic lol. I live in Cornwall we don’t have white lines as the roads are narrow so it won’t work. But now it mandatory on all new cars! I can see the value of older cars going up as people won’t want the tech on new cars.

    I've never even owned (or wanted) a car with ABS or traction control, let alone all this electronic nonsense cars have now. I don't even like power steering. I like the way old-school cars 'talk' to you through the controls, allowing you to feel the road and adjust your inputs as necessary. It's what we used to call driving.

  • @mikejoseph425
    @mikejoseph425 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Two issues, first is you have to use Waze for almost every journey if only because the screen shows the speed limit and you actually speed, and secondly cruise or adaptive cruise as it is the only way to drive within the constantly changing speed limits. For me the real downside of a car with all the “safety features” is that the car takes over the driving and the driver is removed from the fundamental skills, and I find myself losing awareness.
    The antidote for me is a Daihatsu Copen which when driving at 30 seems like 50 and has very few if any driver assistance, so I am much more involved and hence, more aware. Just selling it to buy an MX5 which is similar but a bit more upmarket. Looked at a GR Yaris and an Alpine A110, but they are both an invitation to lose ones licence

  • @sportzntouring
    @sportzntouring 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Self driving is no guarantee of not getting a speeding ticket. There's numerous cases where the car sees an 80km / 100km sign on the back of a European lorry or coach, and thinks the speed limit is 80mph or 100mph... Then starts accelerating to that speed. If that happens under a gantry with a speed camera, you'd get a ticket. And, so far the guidance is that it's still the driver's responsibility.

    Richard. I live in Newcastle and use the Tyne tunnel having signed up to auto pay. The system alerts me instantly via email that I’ve made a journey and paid or need a top up. My point being that with speed cameras, and all anpr fines we should be made aware instantly that we’ve made a mistake via email. If you’re having a bad day it would be great to know that you’ve been fined so that we can adjust our behaviour to avoid more fines coming. The authorities could make this happen?

    That Yaris looks and goes like a pocket rocket, cracking car, but modern day car tech = new world problems. Learn to understand your fusebox, ensuring you only turn off non crucial aids, if the car’s controls don’t provide full enough options. Most of the driver aids are not necessary and are way too intrusive and personally I don’t need t’internet connectivity for music or sat nav. Definitely don’t want my every move being tracked by the car manufacturer or third party company that buys your data. Stick to older analogue cars, then new world problems don’t exist. IMHO they also tend to give a more visceral, seat of the pants drive which I believe is more involved. As for speed cameras, it is a bit of pot luck, although as others have said Waze or other sat navs can help, but then you’re tracked on your phone or car sat nav!☹️👍🤣🤣🤣

    I blame the road "structure" in a lot of cases, majority of the roads that were 40 are now 30, but the road hasn't actually changed so the road still feels like it is a 40. The road should feel the speed limit and I shouldn't need to look at the speedometer. If the road has alot of people speeding on it, then its the road.

      You get additional penalties imposed if you have that credential and even more if you ever taught driving, advanced driving or protective security detail standard. Speed is not the issue with purported safety as the excuse commonly used. Well trained competent fast reactive highly attuned muscle memory abilities and thorough knowledge of the vehicle limitations and weather light conditions topography and static and mobile hazard interpretation makes for safe regardless of speed deemed safe by driver not regulation: Commonly illustrated in motor racing and especially with stunt drivers.
      It is not about safety at all; heavy slab fronted silent fast accelerating EVs with extra crushing capacity are far more relevant than speed. I may be one of the first to have been run over by an EV; can attest wearing strong steel capped safety boots has great virtue and really glad it was only my foot involved. Ground clearance also has great relevance; as I illustrated slow speed running over a Sinclair C5 (the first I believe) merely trapping driver and vehicle uninjured under the sump. Driver ability assessment is probably more relevant than "remedial courses". No accident no injury no foul is far removed from speedster and an accident; the two do not correlate.

    I did speed awareness doing 71 in a 60 on a duel carriage way that the became a 2 lane single carriageway, I genuinely didn’t fully appreciate the difference, which is a central reservation or not, so one side of roundabout 70 other side 60, both have the national speed limit indicator, found it very educational and enjoyable and an excellent way to learn from my mistake.
    One chap on my course was doing 70 in a 50 on the M6 when it was roadworks and because he was drive home with a car full of friends having a laugh at 2am he was the only one on the road had cruise on and just didn’t spot it, their are very honest mistakes made not everyone is driving like a bellend

  • @15bit62
    @15bit62 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    The problem i have with overly pedantic enforcement of speed limits is that the scientific justification is lacking. There is definitely clear evidence that large increases in speed on any given road will result in statistical increases in accidents. So cutting the limit on a road from 60 to 50 will for sure have a measurable impact, and it's an idiot who disputes this.
    But there is no way to accurately cross compare roads, or sections of roads, so you can't compare 2 roads with the same limit and calculate an accurate value for accident probability (or a safety factor number) on each. Which means that you can't say "I want an accident probability of 1%, what speed limit will give me this?". If there were a scientific basis for speed limits that justified strict enforcement within the 1-5% tolerance range, the limits themselves wouldn't come in multiples of 10, they'd come in multiples of 5 or even 1. And they wouldn't come in multiples of 10 in both mph and kph (depending on the country).
    The reason they come in multiples of 10 is because that is a convenient round number for people, and because the accuracy of the safety basis for that limit is more like ±5 than ±1. It is "fuzzy". So a road is "safe" at around 30mph, or around 50mph or whatever. It is not suddenly unsafe at 31, 51 and so on. Enforcement should reflect that, and traditionally it has in the main. Now however we are in a situation where everything about the speed limit is set very hard in black and white, and that has a poor fundamental basis.
    Interestingly, the only part of the speed limit which is not black and white is how it is set in the first place - that is still done by some people looking at the road type, the historical accident stats and such and making an entirely subjective evaluation of what they think the speed limit should be.

    Speed cameras or data directly off the cars? At very least need to challenge the data source and the qualifications such as calibration and accuracy of the cameras as reflections off rounded profiles can greatly influence the derived speed. Yes driving at 35 rather than 30 really merits penalties as the non-existent pedestrians would be even more significantly injured while all the time slab fronted fast accelerating silent toxic plasma bombs also have extra mass to facilitate more effective crush and impact injuries. Follow the Money.

    I always do 2mph over the limit when on a cruise, i.e., 32 in a 30, 53 in a 50, 62 in 60, and 72 in a 70. That brings me up to the exact limit. I go through average speed cameras, notmal speed cameras, and even the popo driving behind me can't catch me for speeding.

    You can buy a radar jammer online from the right American websites. No tickets just don't draw too much attention to yourself.

    Too many dongs and dings! I blame the EU directives. You should at least have the option to turn everything off.

    It's an absolute bitch, but come on Richard, you've never used cruise control or Waze??? I reckon that over the last 10 years or so, they have saved my license no end of times, especially cruise control. I would never buy a car without it!

    I usually have a lot of time and respect for your content but trying to somehow blame your car/s because you are not paying attention fully is ridiculous. Ironically, the systems that everyone is so keen to switch off would likely have saved you. The Adaptive Cruse in my Audi reads the road signs adjusts speeds automatically. It is easy to override or set a small tolerance too. Like everything though, it is not foolproof and still requires the driver to pay attention.
    If you like old school driving so much, do what we used to do and adjust your speed manually to the conditions and to the limits. There have always been fast cars, it is how well you drive them that matters.
