  • Always move up a hook size to make your foundation chain, particularly for large items like blankets that need to lie flat when they're finished. This video shows the difference between tight chains and medium chains worked with the recommended hook size, and loose chains worked with a bigger hook.

Thanks for this. I am learning crochet completely from watching you tube tutorials and this is the best illustration of this problem and solution I have seen.

This was such a good explanation! Some guides or patterns suggest having looser starting chains, but I had no idea how to tell.

I wish I knew that before I started. It was becoming obvious when I was having trouble working into the first row. But now that bowing is way obvious. I wonder if I should start over...

Is there a way I can correct it after making my project? Will blocking work? In the future I will use a bigger crochet hook for the chain

How can I fix it if my first row is too tight and I've already finished my blanket?

Hi Sheila, that's a bit trickier but it is possible. You need to insert a "life-line" into the feet of the stitches of the first row and carefully cut away the old foundation chain, then remake it with a bigger hook - this webpage shows you what to do - by-katerina.com/crochet-tips-tricks-remake-foundation-chain/

Was the first one in a 5.5? Or a 5.0 hook?
