    While flying wave lift we ended up totally stopped over the ground. Not moving forwards, backwards, up, or down. In strong conditions mountain wave lift can take gliders to past 50,000 feet!

      You always need your license and registration on you in case the fighter pilot asks! And be sure to pull it out and give it non-aggresively.

      10k ft you don't need to worry as there is more than enough room to recover from a stall if airspeed was to drop, you should would be totally worried if this was to happen like 1000ft to 50ft from the ground...

    Oxygen - Another pilot is in the back seat flying. He’s on oxygen and is pilot in command. I as then am a passenger I am required to have it available to me at 15,000’ and above but am not required to use it. Within these rules I simply took off the funny big plastic mustache cannula to talk on video. Thx for the comments!

      I figured that.
      The requirement of oxygen at 15kft is pretty high. Some people get headache from being above 8000ft. (After the relatively quick ascend in a glider)

      @@michaelderflinger5002 I believe the rules for passenger is just made available. For pilots it’s 14k (still high tho), and longer than 30min above 12.5k. Personally my Mountain High oxygen system can be set to kick in at a few preset altitudes and I just keep it set at 10k

      In the Falklands war between Argentina and the UK, the Harrier jet was very cheeky in that it would get into dogfights with normal jets, but stay still and spin around while shooting missiles. Argentinian pilots were very surprised. Not really related, but it is a funny story.

      You would not see him stationary as the other aircraft also flies in the atmosphere.
      He is stationary in reference to the ground but the air is moving and he is moving in this air. It’s like running on a treadmill. The other airplanes are also on the treadmill.

      And hang gliders. I once got in to a 28 kts headwind and spent a good 20 mins just playing with it hovering sideways across a lake. Must have looked trippy as hell from the ground, especially as one of the gusts coming in for landing meant was actually flying backwards when i touched down. Made me really appreciate what helicopter pilots experience because it played all kinds of havoc with my centre of balance. Just didn't feel normal at all.

      Something similar happens when landing with a parachute on really hot days or hot tarmac, the heat radiating upwards and sustain your hover or even keep you up for minutes longer than normal. You mostly get this effect with the old school military line chutes.

    I was VFR in a small piston aircraft (172RG) at 12,500 and we encountered a strong down draft that pushed us down to 9000 feet. The controller asked why I was descending (VFR flight following with Indi center). I was at max angle of climb right at stall speed and the airplane was still descending.

      @@randomplayer6461 While true, those things are very often connected. Pure ping issues with no packet loss just means you're far from the host but a lot of the time bad ping results from poor internet more generally which can bring packet loss with it.

      I would absolutely love that. I often take walks and hate having to "worry" that another human is possibly nearby and we'll cross paths and I'll have to feel awkward as shit. To know for a fact nobody is around would be incredible. Just take in the view and let your mind wander.

    I once had a paraglider flight where I landed in the exact same place where I took off, and with the same trajectory, but in reverse. Winds at the coast were smooth and strong enough to keep me parked in the air like this, and when I added some brakes I inched backwards and downward, right to where I had started. To prove it wasn't a fluke I took off and did the same thing again. One of my best days ever.

    Groundspeed zero videos are always amazing to see. In mountainous areas you come across wind speeds such as 40-50 so with glider or a single engine you can achieve gs zero easily

    An old friend had this dream of his to do just this but slow his speed just a little so he would go backwards over our small town and sure. One day the winds hit the mountain just right and he did it. Flying like 5km/h backwards (and maybe hiting +.2 on the vario or so) it was epic!

      Yes, it's possible with a strong headwind and slow flight configuration on a light aircraft. I did it once ages ago.

      I did it once too, ages ago - practising stalls in a C172; must have been a strong headwind - just before the stall I looked out the window and noticed a farmhouse below was moving forwards not backwards relative to me. Weird feeling.

    I have done that in a Cessna 150. Years ago I was flying at the Great Falls International Airport. They had a two mile long runway that I really didn't need that day. They had a very strong wind coming straight down the centerline. With full flaps and partial power, I was just hovering above the numbers, stationary. I had to increase power and lower the nose to get the plane to come down and touch the runway. The tower complimented me on a "nice shortfield landing". LOL

      This is actually how the majority of migratory birds fly long distances. They don't have nearly enough stamina to flap their wings all the way so they find upstream, climb to higher altitudes with it and just glide to the next upstream.

      Yes, and we land going backwards-- slowly ---sometimes when slope gliding. Just watch out for the rotor, it can screw you into the ground. I have gotten stuck in a wave over a mountain range, that is what Brent is doing.
