Thank you my friend. Had bought a used riding lawn mower and notice constant uneven cutting until even my wife noticed it. Saw you channel Problem Now Solved! The lawn mower had been sitting for 1 1/2 Years. didn't think to check tires!!! Thank You!

My son-inlaws D125 has a lot of hours on it and the aluminum trunion had worn grooves in it and it wouldn't sit on the rod properly. I had to stomp on the mower deck to get it to settle on the rod so I could adjust the deck height accurately. Luckily it is an inexpensive part pn GX21718.
i went out and bought a welder to fix the rust in an old john deere deck (1st time welding btw). i'm trying to save it from the scrap pile and my old craftsman is about to give out. the deere was a feebie so i can justify some time and money on it. had it for a few years, most of that time it's been parked and on the "list". anyway brakes were bad and the thing that annoyed me more than anything was the transmission release valve. it couldn't be rolled but scooted. i spend a couple hours messing with that just so i can hopefully never use it lol.
Thank you! You solved a problem I have had for the last few seasons. Bent blades from hitting high tree roots was the cause for uneven cuts. Replaced the blades. No more uneven cuts. I am now a subscriber to your videos!
The difference in mowing height due to a low tire is even more when you add in the person's weight sitting on the mower. Also I recently installed 2 new front tires, and my front deck height went up about a half inch due to the new front tire tread. Important to check these things!
I would not have thought 5 psi would make much difference. But your right. I got a frount tire with a slow leak. Yeah I put to much air in the leaking tire. I gess im just getting old , but im ignoring the grass cutting uneven look. Yea like I just keep it from taking over. I have a 35 year old craftsman gt 20 tractor mower 44 inch deck. I cut 5 Acres evory 3 weeks. It's got a 20hp onan engine on it. Would love to have a scag Turf Tiger.
I have a Wheelhorse 312-8 and could never get the cut even. New blades, new rollers and adjusted the deck best I could and still uneven, especially in turns. Steve was spot on. Check the inflation and they were off quite a bit. Got them all in spec and now my cut is dramatically improved. Thanks Steve!
Well I be Damn... I was wondering why my MTD riding mower was cutting 3 inches lower on the right side...I had a Flat Right Rear tire... Thanks a lot for posting this video you saved me a ton of money... Now to find a video on how to fix a MTD riding mower rear tire...
I replaced the spindles, and installed new blades awhile back. Not such a hard job, a pain in the butt one for me. Getting too old. Started the rider and engaged the blades and low and behiold the belt broke. I thought not this time, I'd rather pay someone else to put a new one on. It also needed some electrical work done too. I had noticed the tires were a little low on pressure, so I aired them up. After mowing last week, I thought that the yard had never looked better. Never gave a thought about under inflated tires. It does make a huge difference. After watching this video, I now understand. That is the best tip I had ever seen. I watch videos for self help and have never seen anyone else cover this topic. By the way Steve, I'll stick with Miller Light. Unlike you and my two brothers, I'm a one beer man. Have a great day!
First thing I said was tire pressure. Yay. The rest was learning experience. Thank you so much. My friend said fun fun fun. Because I told her I was on the bed with my two. Girl dachshunds watching a video on lawn mower repair and she was a smart alec and said fun fun fun. Yes, it is and I learn. Thanks for the lesson.
I'm going to check position of the blades. See if close & level. I have another problem. 917.288523 Craftsman riding mower. Shoulder bolt keeps coming out. Ordered more, expensive! Some commented a on parts site ti put lock tight on it when repkacing. Think that will solve problem. Threads are not messed up. I move on very rugged terrain. Bouncing all over. The heavy rains last year this made trenches big and small. When started mowing this year. ROUGH! If I had tractor to fix terrain eould be FANTASTIC!!!! That's all folks!
Oh my God let me just tell you I got a craftsman riding lawnmower from a friend‘s grandfather who’s only used it twice and I could not for the life of me figure out why it was cutting uneven the blades matched up and everything and I was like before I go and start taking things apart let me look on TH-cam this was the first video I went to as soon as you said tire pressure I measured the bottom sure enough it was off by over half an inch and the side that was low was low by over half the psi but I never noticed it. Now it cuts evenly thank you! You have a new subscriber
Great hints and tips Steve. I watch your channel a lot. I also have the same equipment funny enough. I’m super impressed with my ridem mower. I have a Waren Blade for it 56” I have a 120 John Deere, and it handles the snow like a champ. I plow my neighbours drive and mine because they are joined. They are both very steep, but it pushes it up hill like its not even there. I put chains and weights on it, plus I sniped the treads for more grip. ( mostly for the grass, but I’m sure it helps in the snow as well) I’m in love with it. As a bonus I threw on a Aooga horn. 😂 Thanks so much for your help Steve. Love your channel.
I learned the hard way about tire pressure. If the front right tire pressure is low, the right side of the deck will be low AND the left side of the deck will be higher. Yes, all manual gauges are most accurate in the center of their range and 5 psi is that one's lowest. Digital gauges might be most accurate at center scale, too. I like a round air pressure gauge with a dial and needle over the pencil kind, but having the best range for the needed pressure is important. Cool on showing blade tips aligning, no matter if 2 or 3. Now I know to check that now because I always check tire pressure before mowing and I'm seeing uneven cuts. And I'll check both tips to both other tips in case one blade is bent on one side. Both spindles are new so it's not that, but I do hit things with the blades now and then. I know about leveling the deck and making sure all 4 tires' pressure are correct first. Glad I watched this one! Thanks, Steve.
I bought a riding mower for the1st time and fixed my push mower because of your videos. My wife is happy we are saving $$$ instead of paying the shop guys and I found a new hobby...thanks man
Thanks Steve, just put new blades on my Husqvarna lawn mower because it was cutting uneven and it’s still cutting uneven lol. Gonna check the tire pressure etc
Thank you very much for the tips. My mower was cutting my grass uneven. I never thought the air pressure would have a significant effect for the even grass.
@@StevesSmallEngineSaloon Another gifted man with the same name, but thank-you for asking. Your programs are awesome, as I would not have done so much myself, had it not been for the mentoring or tutoring you provide! BTW, I purchased that low scale tire pressure gauge today, and it will arrive in about 10 days. God bless you!
I'm so glad I ran across your channel while I was surfing youtube during quarantine, you have answered so many of my questions! THANK YOU STEVE! Cheers!
I love your videos, they are easy to understand, helpful and thorough! Thanks a lot! Low tire pressure is like an appliance repair friend of mine said, he "fixes" many appliances by plugging them back in or resetting the circuit breaker. Everyone should check the tire pressure with a good guage every time they get out the mower to cut the grass, make it a habit, check the oil, fuel, and tire pressure before you crank it up. It's way too late when you see the problem in the cut grass.
Been having trouble with my old lawn tractor. Evened up the tire pressures and it's cutting great! Had to lower the deck 2 notches to get the right cut height again. If my car was pulling right or left I'd check air pressure in my tires, I just never would've thought this would make this much difference on how a mower cuts. Thanks for the tips and information.
Crazy thing happened to me. I have an 20 year MTD tractor and the 4 arms that attach the deck to the frame one came free the pin came off. That side of the deck would not lower. I could only cut on the highest level. Found that the arm was pinched between the part of the frame it hangs on and the frame it self. Not sure how long it was like that but it cuts a lot better. The whole deck was off which caused suction problems as well. What now brought me to the video is a leaking needle and seat. Tried starting it wouldn't kick over. Finally got it to but smoked like crazy. Didnt run long. Hopefully no damage. But I'm in the process of fixing the old girl. Hope shes ok. Was a hand me down from my grandfather. Thanks for your videos. You are fantastic!
I bought a used John Deere 42" cut a few weeks ago, mowed with it twice but didn't check the deck to see it it needed leveled, finally checked it today and it was way way off, there was 1 1/2 " difference from one side to the other. I used the three blocks of wood method, all cut to 2", lubed all moving parts associated with deck height. set cutting height to 2 1/2" and placed the blocks where they should be and adjusted as necessary. it cuts the grass a lot nicer now....blades seem to be good and not bent...I also moved the gauge wheels up a little higher. Thanks for all your videos and explaining things so well.
I just noticed that the rear or side hanging rods are facing the wrong way from what I have seen on other videos, the hook part of the adjustment rod is opposite of what they should be and they are at an angle. will this really matter as long as the deck can move up and down? Thanks again for all the great videos.
We have a few more reasons why people's ride on mowers cut badly in the UK as we have direct collect machines. 1) Some ride on mowers have a timing belt if they have twin blades and sometimes if the timing is slightly out they will hit each other and cut badly. 2) The blades aren't sharp enough so they don't collect the grass efficiently. 3) There are two brands of ride on mower sold in the UK, Countax and Westwood which have a sweeper collection system which is like a Agrifab towed sweeper collector but directly fitted onto the rear of the machine and PTO belt driven, if the plastic brush bristles are worn they won't collect the grass efficiently and your grass will look a mess.
Unreal, I feel so stupid, I never gave it a thought about the blade tips, dah, thanks Steve, this is why I love your videos , keep them coming and stay healthy.
Thanks, Steve. Great video. I am going to start a small engine repair shop in a few months after I complete my small engine repair course. You are always enlightening me with the experience you share and I know it will help me be successful when I start my own shop. Your videos go beyond textbook learning which is how I learn best. Again, Thank You very much.
I absolutely love your videos I am learning so much we are videos happy to see everyone and give real video a thumbs up keep it up you're doing a great job
I definitely didn't think you were crazy for saying tire pressure because that was actually my first guess. Why? Because I learned the hard way a few months back. My lawn tractor was cutting unevenly, so I looked up a tutorial on how to adjust the deck on my model of lawn tractor. Once I had finished leveling it only then did I notice that one of the back tires didn't look quite right. Once it had the proper amount of air again I had to turn around and then relevel the deck back to the way it was. You live and you learn.

If my car was pulling right or left I'd check air pressure in my tires, I
just never would've thought this would make this much difference on how
a mower cuts. Thanks for the tips and information.
Nice work!
Dark matter! My favourite beer along with Red Arrow Midnight Umber.
Right on
Great video. I keep forgetting about tire pressure. :) I did have a bent deck. Boy, those are hard to fix.
Yes they are!
Great idea , I knew tire pressure was important but didn't think about it affecting the deck that much. Thanks
You're Welcome...
I forgot to say , I aired up all 4 tires to the proper inflation.
I just noticed that the rear or side hanging rods are facing the wrong way from what I have seen on other videos, the hook part of the adjustment rod is opposite of what they should be and they are at an angle. will this really matter as long as the deck can move up and down? Thanks again for all the great videos.
You are awesome. Really enjoy your videos.
I appreciate that!
Excellent video, thanks for sharing!
My pleasure!
I bought 2 brand new rear wheels. They showed up from the factory with 60 psi in each tire. They were huge too. I let the air out, but wow!
Dark Matter is fantastic! Try out Salty Scott from Parallel 49.
Right on
I need to check my tire pressure! And I am a big fan of dark beer,
Right on Jimmy..
Good video Steve .
Thanks 👍
Love all the info Steve gives us. Also like that he Always has a different beer to work with.
Right on

Thanks, Steve. Great video. I am going to start a small engine repair shop in a few months after I complete my small engine repair course. You are always enlightening me with the experience you share and I know it will help me be successful when I start my own shop. Your videos go beyond textbook learning which is how I learn best. You're Welcome...
I absolutely love your videos I am learning so much we are videos happy to see everyone and give real video a thumbs up keep it up you're doing a great job
Thank you! Will do!
Thanks for the reminder on checking the tire pressure. Going to be mowing soon.
Any time!
