The Arecibo Message was a coded message beamed into space from the Arecibo radio scope:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arecibo_message
You're thinking of Voyager's (literally) Golden Record, which has samples of Earth sounds:
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyager_Golden_Record
Famously, EMI declined to give the rights to The Beatles to appear on the record. Copyright's a bitch sometimes-The Beatles are forever a strictly Earth-based treasure.

I don't think Lew lew watched free solo... The relationship between the camera crew and Alex (the climber) was made very clear. He literally did say he can't do it the first time and put off the project for a while. The thing you don't realise is that he wanted to climb the thing before he even thought of making the movie. They did say they all had a serious talk of if something happens what do they do and that they aren't responsible and so on it was very well thought through and the movie conveys that clearly.

The Numbertaker (Lewis Brindley) is a live-action human character (with an exaggerated top hat and a white robe, based on an undertaker). He is also the only meanie to be a human. He causes trouble by taking numbers, children and “numbers of things”; as numbers themselves, the Numberjacks have to be particularly careful when dealing with him. The sleeves of his long white jacket on either side hide various attachments - a vacuum cleaner, an automatic picker, a net, a magnet, a long pole, a hook, and sometimes just his own hands. He neither speaks in any of his appearances, nor smiles much either. He only makes sounds.

Manufactured bands were everywhere in the 60s. The entire bubblegum pop phenomena of the 60s was pure record label marketing of those types of bands. The best example of this would be sugar sugar by the Archies, A literal fictional band, or the monkeys who were put together for their television show.

As an example, The Prodigy were releasing singles that were hitting the top 10 charts at the same time as B'Witched were. I think Pyrion's point is the most accurate and Sips is overlooking some of the great music in the last 20 years that might not really be "pop" but sold big numbers and were in the pop charts, as The Beatles did in their time.

I feel like if they look up stories about Pink Floyd and interviews and things, and also listen to their albums completely a few times, they will love the Floyd. Especially DSOTM, The Wall, Meddle (Echoes especially), and Wish You Were Here. Absolutely phenomenal albums that I never get bored of.

I just have to say -- I still love the spice girls and backstreet boys and nsync and all that BUT my excuse is, that was my first break out of genre as a kid. My mom used to let me listen to nothing but country music because everything else was about sex and drugs and bad habits ( ..yes, there is a lot of irony there ), and then I went to a friend's house and heard backstreet boys playing on her radio and was just like THIS.. THIS IS GOLD. so yeah, it may be bad music, but add a little of that nostalgia seasoning and anything can be grand :D
