The writing is dreadful; the book was terrible. As I read, I noticed that every time a character went for a walk, the author wrote instead that the character "stretched his legs." I began marking on the back of an envelope every time that phrase was repeated. I stopped only after I had marked the envelope several dozen times. I was incredulous. Rowling's mind is so governed by cliches and dead metaphors that she has no other style of writing. Later I read a lavish, loving review of Harry Potter by the same Stephen King. He wrote something to the effect of, "If these kids are reading Harry Potter at 11 or 12, then when they get older they will go on to read Stephen King." And he was quite right. He was not being ironic. When you read "Harry Potter" you are, in fact, trained to read Stephen King.
My favorite fanfic is the alternate dimension in which the Lewis who makes everyone rush through their story because it's boring him and the Lewis who can't get to the point of a twenty minute story that he admits knowing is boring meet each other and they hatefuck each other to death until the end of time.
I listened to every episode of this podcast over the course of about 2 weeks and now that I need to wait on episodes I hate when they end! Every episode is great!
Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality is legitimately well written, a very satisfying read. It takes the premise and rebuilds it into a largely fresh and satisfying narrative. I'd recommend it, especially if you enjoyed the books.
Squad is wonderful for telling stories as squad leader while in the middle of a firefight. Admittedly everyone else got pissed off at me and my mates but I felt like the story of the danish protest pig had priority over shooting afghan militias

HAHAHAHA, the fucking MLP watcher. Please tell me you aren't a brony. There will be unimaginable strife in the future, and you're here watching My Little Pony.
hooooly shit i remember lewis said something on the last podcast (i think it was last podcast) that was straight outta hpmor. i thought i was imagining it and he'd heard it second hand but duuuude. i remember being exactly where he is. rationalist literature is just super refreshing, because it's generally so different from stuff you've read before (kinda like how anime is generally pretty bad, but since the tropes are all foreign to westerners it can be interesting without being truly quality). can we get lewlew to read worth the candle next?
Lewis tries to talk about things that are actually interesting. Pyrion shoots him down to the best of his ability. Sips talks about a plug-He's spellbound by the unfolding narrative.
I couldn't even finish the episode because on Lewis's fanfic talk... It's like sitting down for half an hour as someone tells you about a dream someone else had.
Maybe if you only play PC games then things are bleak. Last year was amazing for PS4 and console games in general (God of War and Spider-Man were both great) and I am personally hyped for Days Gone.
Christ, Pyrion isn't even 50 but he's already the grumpiest old man, with outdated narrowminded opinions xD I love some of his stories, but the way he just shoots down everything that came "after his time" is so fucking stupid.
the thing Lewis never seems able to compute is that "death and sex" aren't adult only features, in fact those are primarily aimed at teen audiences, and they don't automatically make a book interesting to an adult. It _can_ , as stuff rated for teens can often be interesting to a wider audience, but obviously pyrion and sips couldnt give less of a shit
Pyrion saying that the young adult section is filled with stuff like twilight seems like a bit of an overgeneralization. I've found many books that are far beyond the complexity or maturity level of Twilight such as The Wheel of Time and even The Lord of the Rings. Didn't he say he was a fan of Red Rising? That's a book that is generally found in the young adult section. (Listening to people while talking makes my typing of a sentence very disjointed.)
Harry Potter as a franchise is one of these "for the whole family" deals. The books were written with the intention to be read by kids of the same age as the main characters - so by 11 year olds for the first book, and then Rowling assumes her audience aged along with the books to be young adults when they wrap up. Based on what I heard from early fans, that kinda worked. I think the tone kind of works in that respect. However, the world and story are interesting enough to appeal to people of all ages, provided you like that kind of fantasy universe and dont "need" the very adult grittiness. Some people like HP as adults for nostalgia, but it also can make sense when you discover it late. It is a wholesome, enjoyable story with nice emotional moments. I like(d) it more and more as I grew older too, personally. It shares those qualities with lots of Disney, particularly Pixar stories : yeah, they're made for kids, but also good enough stories to be entertaining to adults, with rich worlds full of details that older people can appreciate.

I don’t think disliking the new AAA games at the moment means you’re turning into a grumpy old man. A lot of them are genuinely sacrificing the quality and balance of the game to shove in live service monetisation stuff and being shoved out the door incomplete. It’s not surprising so many people want to go back and play older stuff or indies at the moment.
I've listened to all of the episodes and I still can't tell if Pyrion is being serious or not sometimes... So maybe his sense of humor just isn't in tune with the others, I don't know...
San Francisco has doubled their homeless programs again and reported record low rates of "homelessness." However what they didn't count on was that the housed families, newly college enrolled students, rehab groups, and so on STILL PANHANDLE. That is why in addition to the dirty drugged up homeless population, you'll see pan handling clean clothed mothers with kids or 20-something blonde girls in college jerseys holding up cardboard signs. These people are housed, but the only way they supplement their income is with begging. So even if the stats report decreasing homeless, the number of beggars are only increasing- and when counties and states see the money we're pouring into SF programs they sneakily nudge their excess homeless into the Bay Area. And you can't forget the damage Carson is doing to the HUD at the same time there is rampant gentrification.
Well the city isn't dead yet. At least one good aspect of progressive politics is that everything is a debate and slog. Everyday, there are more perspectives and considerations being layered on and documented. The trouble is that there isn't a single leader to take decisive action while that debate goes on, paralyzing the system and allowing the unscrupulous to pull dirty tricks before laws catch up to them. Consider San Francisco's Chinatown. That piece of real estate is worth billions; it represents the literal last bastion of the Chinese American population. When Chinese migrants were being lynched across California during the railroad and Gold Rush era, they fell back and fortified San Francisco. You are practically walking into a different country when you reach the heart of that district. All the "good" that gentrification offers has no possible way to maintain the services that Chinatown offers the Chinese American population: linguistically, medically, culturally, economically, etc. Imagine if investors make a concerted effort and actually managed to takeover, buying up all the real estate and opening up "modern" urban businesses. That popped bubble would immediately spread disfranchised Chinese people all across the cities who have no way manage their niches to neither give nor take. No white people are going to want to buy gai lan or water chestnuts everyday and nowhere else has the language services to cater to the first generation elderly Chinese. And that is what happening all over the place with mini Hispanic hotspots, Cambodian/Vietnamese neighborhoods, former black majority neighborhoods, and so on. Gentrification popped those communities and the shuffling is causing discord.
