I just assumed they were all electronic shift by "wire" anymore. Many years ago I had a 71' GMC with a large slide in camper. We were 600 miles from home, about 25 miles from civilization and backing down a steep hill. When it came time to go into "D" there wasn't any resistance in the column shifter and not going into "D". I was in a pretty safe spot, stopped the motor and jumped underneath after looking under the hood & dash. I saw that the linkage had come undone. Coat hanger wire & duct tape got us home and then did a real repair. All part of the adventure I guess.. If your not handsome, you better be handy !
“First breakdown after three years” Yikes! Expensive trucks shouldn’t break in three years - however, they made good on it and it could happen with any brand. RAM is still the best - feature by feature. But the fact that they, apparently, never corrected the previous recall… Gotta love Ray for taking off the seals and letting us look :)
My Ram 3500 dually went through all the emissions problems OBD error codes, and never was fully fixed by Ram after a dozen or so trips to dealerships across north america while traveling full time.. I eventually pulled all the emissions off it at around 60k miles. Haven't had an engine failure since and I have 150k miles on it now.

I have basically the same truck except in a Laramie trim, the 68 trans and 6 months newer. I have 33K miles now and no warranty problems. But thanks for the info in case I have that issue.
Interesting situation and glad to hear it was a somewhat straightforward repair. I currently own a 2018 Ram 3500 SLT. I have owned two Ram's now, my first one was a 2014 Ram 1500. I am not sure if you have experienced this but both my Ram's seemed to have a minor problem where the shifter won't go into park right away from drive or reverse. Sometimes I have to put it back into gear/neutral, jiggle the shifter, pump the brakes which will then put it into park. Curious if anyone else has experienced this as it seems to occur more than any other make of vehicle I have owned.
Glad it was a straightforward fix and the dealer could get a part right away. On the tail end of Covid there are so many shortages That could have easily been a several week ordeal. Hopefully it was defective , not inherent to the design and not something that wil rear its head again every few years... thanks for sharing!
The tow truck driver tells me with he sees quite a few with the new turn dial dash mount shifter but not to many with the column. He hadn't seen one go quite like this.
The quality issues on my 2019 3500 involve water leaks, water leaks and more water leaks. It took almost a full year before the issues were solved by replacing all the cab marker lights and the entire sun roof. I also had the loose shifter lever. I asked the service dept to tighten it at one of the many service appointments to rectify the water leaks. I was told that if they only tightened it, I would have to pay the labour. If they replaced the entire shifter assembly, warranty would pay for it. So instead of a quick turn of a 10 mm socket, a new shifter assembly was ordered and yet another warranty visit to replace the shifter. If only Toyota would come out with an HD diesel pickup!!!
I had heard that the rear cab window brake light leaks were notorious for leaks so I took mine apart and resealed it with aquarium tank silicone sealant as a preventative measure. Sounds like I did the right thing.
On my 2013, the aluminum clamp that holds the shift lever snapped while I was trying to take it out of park. That trans has a really course park pawl and if there is weight against it when you are taking it out of park, it takes a fair amount of force. Eventually it broke (out of warranty, of course). The tow truck driver couldn't even load it because it was stuck in park. I had him back his lifting mechanism against my trailer hitch ball and push (I was parked up-hill) to take the weight off the pawl. I was then able to grab the remains of the clamp with vice grips and shift it that way. Of course I no longer needed a tow as I was able to drive it like that to the repair shop. Good times.
There’s aluminum clam shell. That Breaks. Slide the boot off and remove the plastic on top of and bottom of column. It’s super easy to fix the part is about 100 bucks at the dealership. Mine broke on a 2016 Ram 3500. Don’t take it to the dealership unless it’s under warranty.
Thanks for the tip! That sounds like it may be a different part than my shifter cable that failed? Or is it part of the cable? The cable is a little over $100 for the whole thing www.mymoparparts.com/oem-parts/mopar-shift-cable-68261253ac

You bet, check this on out northern CA, pouring rain and no cell service. :) www.loveyourrv.com/stranded-101-highway-northern-california/ Oh well at least we had our home and a good eatery next door.
And DO NOT ever park against a curb backwards with pressure on the rear tires! Or you may find yourself unable to take it out of park. “IF” you do find yourself stuck in park, take that shifter column boot off and there is a tab you can press to release the shifter. It’s happened to me 3x with my 2018.

So far the Japanese AISIN tranny has been great, cant complain. I'm hopeful it will last being a medium duty tranny in a pick up truck. Came with a 160 KM warranty.
I'm sorry I did this to you. When you were showing the picture of the old Ford I was thinking about how you are still liking the Dodge, and then this happened lol
One of the guaranteed things to work forever is a shifter lever on the older vehicles it would last until the vehicle is falling apart literally. Now today with these newer Vehicles they don't even make the 3-year mark what a failure.
Yeah, the old vehicle shifters were almost indestructible like old school rotary phones. However I do remember having problems with turn signal levers with a few of my old vehicles. Cheers, Ray
Did they say why it went? I wonder if I should be putting mine in 4x4 mode more often just to exercise things. 4x4 is nice to have when you need it but I hardly need it.
