Ummm! No! The bends become a weak point because they WILL rust quicker than the rest of the wire. I have had to fix fence too many times because of people doing this. The mender is a pain in the rear to use by yourself sometimes but it will allow you to pull the sections together to wrap them around each other. The end result should be a smooth twist that is barely noticeable.

Thanks. It was the way my grandad taught me when I was a kid. Several people have mentioned the opposing twist method and I’ve been having good luck with it
