Hey I’m Korean American so I get that. I guess what just confused me is that the movie is very much based on East Asian culture and you never appeared to have East Asian features to me. But hey maybe I’m just taking the material too seriously so apologies if that’s the case, don’t mean to invalidate anyone.
I'm a 70-year-old black man, and I adore this movie. I've seen it multiple times. First time, I laughed so hard I choked...almost had to call 911. People who claim "I can't relate" are jerks. We watched a Pixar movie about a French rat, and we all related. We watched a Pixar movie about a a futuristic automated trash compactor, and we all related. We relate to stories that are not about "us" all the time. This movie did a very good job defining the environment, the characters, the conflict and the stakes to make them relatable.
I even don't think this is only related to Asians but for other ethnicity. I'm latin American and I felt related with this. Dealing with our parents' expectations is hard for everyone.
At least in term of stereotypes, Asian parents are basically Latin parents and Jewish parents combined... (They can hit you with a shoe from across town. But a guilt trip is less effort and more effective...)
Just watch , Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) , Sidney pointier speech to Roy Glenn who plays his father , its on YT ... You are 30 years older than I am. One of the things I liked about this film was how they didn’t ignore the damage that was done by the giant pandas. Most films just move on to a happily ever after ending and completely disregard the chaos and damage left in the story’s wake. However in this film they showed the family taking responsibility for the damage they caused and earnestly trying to make reparations for it. I also really appreciated the setting of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. They did a good job of capturing the essence of a “big city with a small town vibe”, which is such a wonderful part of Toronto’s character.

I think a movie about teenage girl puberty is way overdue. It's been made too taboo for too long. There has been double meanings in Disney animations for years, that only parents got because kids were too young to understand what they meant until they were old enough to get it as teens or adults. So, I think these so called "conservative Karens" are just being extra because they prefer their kids be ignorant about the way of mother nature until it's too late and the kids freak out or go the wrong way with their choices because they've been overbeared and sheltered too much of their lives. Meilin's mom's panda is so huge because of how repressed and resentful she kept herself since before puberty hit. Too much stress. In Ming's case it's from generational trauma and she had trouble understanding her Westernized daughter's behavior. Is it me, or did the aunties look like they spent too much time at the plastic surgeon's office? The writer of this movie handled two subjects brilliantly, imo. Why is it that almost every reactor I've seen not picks up on this movie taking place in 2002 and in Canada for the majority of the movie, when it was shown and talked about since the opening? That's just funny. In the opening, she's seen in a calendar family photo of 1992, and then it changes to show 2002 when she jumps out of the still shot to narrate. She says the words growing up as an Asian Canadian...especially mentioning Canada on her public bus pass. The memorable throwback to the lingo (like "OMG" overused a lot), hair clip styles, Uggs, Cha Cha Slide, Bootylicious, American White boy bands, the cell phones. Lots of early 2000's nostalgia that I think a lot of millennials relate to.

It's kind of a shame that so many people look so negatively at Mei's mom. Me never having any children, I make it a goal to never judge a parent who is showing any kind of interest in their children. As long as there is no abuse, I can't bring myself to criticize, especially when I have no experience in that area. Of course, I can understand Mei's frustration, but her mother genuinely loves and cares for her, and there are so many kids that don't have that luxury.
I think this is universal no matter what ethnicity you are. I was a white kid from Texas and wasn’t allowed to watch any movies much past pg. I remember my first pg-13 movie I was allowed to see was 1989 Batman. I had to beg my parents to go with a friend when I was 13. 🤣 the grass is always greener on the other side no matter who you are, which is what makes it so universal.
As being a teen of the latter mid-90s up til 2002 when the movie was set, I related a lot to how school (and later high school) was that is in the film, such as Tamagotchi (when I was 14 in 97 that's when it started and it was big, plus that's when the cellphone craze boomed), boy bands (particularly in high school when N Sync, Backstreet Boys etc. were really big), home burned music CD:s, the attitudes of teens and so forth. This gave Turning Red a lot nostaglic vibes as it reminded me of the early 2000's and the teen years even if I live in Sweden instead of Canada.

As a Canadian, it was great to see Toronto represented as an actual city in and of itself, rather than a stand in for some anonymous US city. The Canadian born director, Domee Shi, also did the Oscar winning animated short "Bao" in 2019 (also worth checking out at is also speaks to the Asian experience), and grew up in Toronto...if was awesome to see all the different cultures represented for a change. As an first generation Asian Canadian, I was touched by a lot of the conversations as well...it was a really great movie with a great message - thanks for reacting to it Mary!
The Greater Toronto Area truly is a melting-pot, it's been very enriching to have grown up with and befriended people from more cultures and countries than I could count on both hands. Looking forward to more films focusing on those cultures and receiving this kind of love.
Mary, I actually thought you were of Portuguese heritage! My brother in law is from a Portuguese family, and you are remarkably similar to one of his sisters, both in looks and how you speak (we're Australian too). I also thought "Mary" might be short for Maria, which is super common in Portugal.
Undoubtedly my favorite 2022 movie since I'm a Canadian myself 😁✊🏻💕🎥, also wow I can't believe it but when you said that when you had your first period you thought you we're dying I thought the same thing when I had my first period 😱🤣
I really do hope some parents watch this and come to realise that their way isn't always the right way like you said. But it's going to take some time for some parents to let their guard down. They've been in survival mode for so long that it's intimidating to learn to let that go and be vulnerable again. To learn that admitting you failed at some point doesnt mean you failed everything. Movies like this are so important. ---- Personal experience, feel free to skip : When I watched Encanto with my mother, she didnt like the fact that abuela apologised and she didnt want to admit that this was the catharsis that was needed for everything to get better. That was quite frustrating for me, having had a really strained relationship with her in my younger teens because of abusive behavior on her part (and being depressed and not always poised and calm which added oil to the fire when i wouldn't just take her yelling and insulting me) and having left home at 14 because of this - especially since i thought our relationship was getting healthier at the time we were watching the movie ! Now, she also had a very rough upbringing in a lower class family with a mother that was quite abusive - generational trauma is real in this case as ive heard both my mom and hers each complain about how hard their mothers (and my mom's mother even told me a couple of years ago that if she was in my shoes (when i was 14) she would've left and never come back because of how "crazy" my mom (her daughter) was). I'm glad for everything my mother gave me and i did tell her that multiple times over the years but she couldn't see anything besides the fact i left and that i once said she should go talk to a therapist (which is the worse thing ive said about her, she took that as me saying she was absolutely crazy -- disregarding the fact i was asking her to take me to therapy as well because i needed help). But i also had to allow myself to recognise that i didn't deserve the way she treated me in order to heal. Our relationship is way better now and she's able to hear my side, and how i always kept on saying that she was a great mom even though she did mess up at some point. She's able to hear that I never blamed her for messing up, because i understood why she had a breakdown all these years ago - when in the past she used to ask me to explain to her something she did that hurt me and flip out when i'd start answering her. I could see she was hurting by not being able to hear those things and communicate. And now, maybe watching Encanto and movies on similar topics and letting time do its thing really helped her afterall because we're able to have full on conversations - even when we disagree on something. I love the place we are now, even though it's not quite stable just yet. But i like to think we managed to have our little miracle. It is possible to heal, but it's also very valid to go no or low contact until the person who abused you really start working on themselves - you can't fix someone who doesn't put in any effort to stay put together.
I had no interest in this movie until I read a comment by some Karen going "HoW aM i SuPpOsEd To TeLl My FoUr YeAr OlD aBoUt PeRiOdS?!?!?1" which made me think "Okay, this movie will probably be wonderful" and now it's second only to Ratatouille as my favorite Pixar film. My kids also adore this movie (especially my son)
@@paulmatthews463 So knowing how the body functions means they're no longer kids and can no longer be kids? By your logic then we have an epidemic of 1-2-year-old adults forced too early to learn what poo is.

Was the same way with the staying up with my twin to watch shows that we were not allowed to watch and we're not allowed to stay up for. Just like you mentioned with the X-Files for yourself and your sister. Only hours was the arsenio hall show!
The one thing I don't like about this movie is that Meilin's mother just didn't even think to ask her obviously scared and distressed daughter who's trying to hide *something* if she happened to turn into a red panda. She obviously knew it was a distinct possibility if not assumed to happen.
As an Asian, I always knew Mary is Asian one way or another. I dunno. I guess it’s an Asian thing? Maybe it’s also because Asians per sé acknowledge that “Asian” is a large umbrella term for anyone ethnically from Asia, which include Middle Easterns, East Asians, Southeast Asians, South Asians, and portions of Pacific Islanders, etc. Asians know Asians.
The reason Mei's granma say four is a unlucky number is because it's the equvialent of west's 13 being an unlucky number. Four in chinese sounds close to "death", hence why it is consindered unlucky.

Somehow I get the impression that you would never pass the kitten box test… In Canada, we don’t call then beanies. They’re toques (pronounced ‘took’). Plus, you missed the end credits scene… Otherwise awesome reaction.
By the title I was sure she did not like the movie. But I'm glad she loved him! This is an amazing and original movie! And so far my favorite movie of the year
Mei is Asian Canadian. The movie is set in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This is Canada, she was wearing a tuque, not a beanie. FYI, Toronto population is 50% immigrants and 49% non-white. That explains the large number of " ethnic " characters. That's Toronto.
You should see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This movie reminds me of it because my niece and I watch that'n and this'n over and over when I babysit
Great movie! Mei was my sister growing up. Laughing again just thinking about the resemblance lol. Definitely relating to the bicultural thing: traditional (Filipino, in my case) parents, me and my siblings' very Americanized upbringing. Communication was (still sometimes is) the biggest challenge. Very well highlighted in this movie, I thought.
Dont worry about some of these comments please. Some people just don't understand how nationalities, ethnicities, and cultures can be be different from one another. I don't know how that applies to you, but I know all too well what it's like when people try to invalidate how I identify. Great reaction as always!
@@MaryCherryOfficial didn’t mean to do that with my original comment, I was just surprised to find out you’re ethnically Asian. Hey it’s awesome to have more ethnic content creators out there, more the merrier!
@@MaryCherryOfficial I really don't think people are trying to invalidate your life experience. As someone who has studied human geography, I find people's ethnicity and cultural background to be quite fascinating. I really think it's mostly people's curiosity. Really though, I don't think identifying as "Asian" really says much about your life experience since Asian is far, far too broad a category to have any significant meaning. I would guess somewhere around 90% of the ethnic groups in the world can be found in "Asia"
i rate this film better than moana and encanto, and about on-par with Coco, mostly because i cant stand Lin Manuel Miranda's work. above all, i love this movie for how many hypocritical people it pissed off.

The dad has so small amount of lines but when he gets the moment he deliverse.
There is an expression “ music soothes the savage beast”.
The actual expression "Music has charms to soothe the savage breast"
Mary, I actually thought you were of Portuguese heritage! My brother in law is from a Portuguese family, and you are remarkably similar to one of his sisters, both in looks and how you speak (we're Australian too). I also thought "Mary" might be short for Maria, which is super common in Portugal.
come on! The kitten box test is outright CHEATING. Nobody could resist it! Kittens don't play by the rules!
I love 💕 🐈
This movie deserves love than criticism it got upon release.
Bro the most unrealistic thing in the movie is an Asian mom apologizing. The panda I buy, but a mom apologizing? All right Disney, that's enough.
Clearly Mary wouldn't pass the kitten box test! Hahaha.
Undoubtedly my favorite 2022 movie since I'm a Canadian myself 😁✊🏻💕🎥, also wow I can't believe it but when you said that when you had your first period you thought you we're dying I thought the same thing when I had my first period 😱🤣
20:49 and then you realize in hindsight she was just looking for any excuse to not be there when the rest of the family showed up.

Personal experience, feel free to skip :
When I watched Encanto with my mother, she didnt like the fact that abuela apologised and she didnt want to admit that this was the catharsis that was needed for everything to get better.
Mary i don't care about ethnicities but this title has piqued my interest about your ethnicity. What kind of asian are you?
Love ❤️ from india🇮🇳

The dad he's my favorite character
As a Canadian, I loved seeing rainbow money, Tim Hortons and shit! 🤣
Oddly enough, I am watching this on a day that has a lunar eclipse happening.
Is this a subject that 4 year olds need to know about?
@@paulmatthews463 Is there a reason 4-year-olds shouldn't know how a human body works?
. yea, they are 4 years old. Why cant we just let kids be kids while they are still kids?
@@paulmatthews463 So knowing how the body functions means they're no longer kids and can no longer be kids? By your logic then we have an epidemic of 1-2-year-old adults forced too early to learn what poo is.
@@HobGungan no that's something that they have to deal with at their age of course. I just dont understand why nowadays people seem to be in a hurry to force the trials and tribulations of adulthod onto children instead of just letting them be kids.
I just got a red panda tattoo on Friday! When I was planning it out, I decided I'd better watch this movie lol. It's cute movie
Was the same way with the staying up with my twin to watch shows that we were not allowed to watch and we're not allowed to stay up for. Just like you mentioned with the X-Files for yourself and your sister. Only hours was the arsenio hall show!
Wait, Mary is Asian!? As a Korean American man I never picked up on that somehow.
asia is an extremely big continent, you know
@@MaryCherryOfficial so you are Australia mix? 😂😂
@@budweiser600 She is; there are about 4m Asians in Australia.
I think she should prove it with a kung fu tutorial/exhibition, unless she's not a 'Kool' Asian.

Is this the first time Mary has said on YT that she's Asian?
It's certainly news to me.
22:10+22:11+22:12+22:13+22:14
I'm pretty sure she said it before what her background is.
And if anything, her old school presentation on Bin Laden might give an indication of what context she comes from.
Does it matter?
I watched this movie a week ago and it's my favorite movie of the year so far
Aww, yay! I was hoping you'd react to this. You're such a joy to watch.
In america, our Total Girl magazine was called Teen Beat LOLOL
in the UK I had 'Girl Talk' :)
I need to get to get that quote tattooed lol “ See! See! This is what happens when you don’t ware sunblock and do drugs all day” with the moms face
The reason Mei's granma say four is a unlucky number is because it's the equvialent of west's 13 being an unlucky number. Four in chinese sounds close to "death", hence why it is consindered unlucky.
"Casualties of War" (1989) True Vietnam story incident that really happened, starring Sean Penn and Michael J Fox.
A very important different war film that gets ignored on reaction channels. Please react to it. 🙏 Start the trend on this important film. Thank you.
The Name of the Band is a kind of pun Four Town - For (the) Town
I have seen this movie at least four times and I love it
Thanks Mary, you alway have such fun reactions. Aloha!
16:11 I wanna know where did her mom get a box of kittens, and what happened to the kittens after Mei passed.
Same
If you pause at 20:37, you can see two cats and a kitten sleeping by the gate. These cats are likely the parents of the box of kittens, so that’s where they got them from.
The Breath of the Wild blood moon rising reference gagged me 🤣🤣🤣
I love her reaction to cute little cats
Watch soul on disney+ its another masterpiece from Pixar
Yay one of my favorite TH-camrs uploaded! Love your vids so much Mary :)
I loved your closing commentary on the movie. 😍❤️ Couldn't agree more with every single point you made.
Love the video Mary stay motivated dream big 1 mill on the way
Honestly, why does anybody care where she is from? Yall have this odd obsession of this. She puts in so much work to provide us with entertainment. its notbodies business.
Thank god she has you here to defend her from...questions about things she has said publicly.
There is/was a bunch of comments about this because a lot of white ally posers are pulling the one sixteenth nonsense. Mary however seems to be genuine about this.
Would the UK Equivalent of total girl have been just 17 back in the day? I remember female friends who read that one
That was vandalism not graffiti art !! Lmao COMPTON CA. in this bi🤫 much love yall stay healthy.
I love graffiti art/street art but not unprompted art. ❤
Well The directors intention Was to Tell a story about a Young Lady’s Awkward phase in life...She claimed it’s a story about”Magical Puberty!”
also I’m Full4 Townie
Somehow I get the impression that you would never pass the kitten box test…
In Canada, we don’t call then beanies. They’re toques (pronounced ‘took’).
Plus, you missed the end credits scene…
Otherwise awesome reaction.
Priya actually asks Mei-mei "What's with the toque?"
Pause on 12:28 (Mary and the Moms faces have the same Hysterical Look)
😂
Great timing. Toronto will be able to see an eclipse/ red moon tonight
Wow didn't know Mary was part asian! Very cool 😯
By the title I was sure she did not like the movie.
But I'm glad she loved him! This is an amazing and original movie! And so far my favorite movie of the year
2 of the 4 Town members are Twins. They're from the same town. That's why they're called 4 Town & not 5 Town.
Mei is Asian Canadian. The movie is set in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
This is Canada, she was wearing a tuque, not a beanie.
FYI, Toronto population is 50% immigrants and 49% non-white. That explains the large number of " ethnic " characters. That's Toronto.
hosers.
Mei mei’s dad is a 4townie its at the very end of the credits
It’s set in the early 2000s also I think there’s a lot of overlap with immigrant mothers, cuz I felt alot of these moments as a Latino
idk if you noticed, but she called the panda statues outside Bart and Lisa, after the Simpsons.
Merry cherry: what is this Chinese game of thrones me: that movie gives me trama but 😂😂😂😂😂😂
You should see Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This movie reminds me of it because my niece and I watch that'n and this'n over and over when I babysit
I didn't really relate to this movie but that doesn't mean it's not a good movie. Not everything has to be for everyone.
🤯😧 I DIDN'T KNOW YOU'RE ASIAN?! AWESOME!!!! 🥰😄🤗🥳
2:04 There's actually 3! Abby is Korean
Before I even watch, I never knew you were Asian makes a lotta sense now
did you know this is the day of a lunar eclipse? 👍🔭
Mei's dad is the MVP of this movie.
“The most dangerous beast is the beast within”.
Been waiting for Mary to react to this movie!!!
Dont worry about some of these comments please. Some people just don't understand how nationalities, ethnicities, and cultures can be be different from one another. I don't know how that applies to you, but I know all too well what it's like when people try to invalidate how I identify.
Great reaction as always!
Exactly. Thank you for this comment. So many comments trying to invalidate my life experience. Absolutely wild to me
@@MaryCherryOfficial didn’t mean to do that with my original comment, I was just surprised to find out you’re ethnically Asian.
"Easier" ... no one has it easy. That's just a grass is greener on the other side mentality...
i rate this film better than moana and encanto, and about on-par with Coco, mostly because i cant stand Lin Manuel Miranda's work. above all, i love this movie for how many hypocritical people it pissed off.
