People in twitter said that this movie is for girls, and it is. But it doesn't mean That the movie is not amazing. Bacause it is. Funny, creative animation and good storyline. Another Pixar masterpiece.
My sister taught me about this from when she was studying media. But it's a very common thing for things in media that is directed towards teen girls to be pushed to the side and be seen as not being good from people who never even took it in. Like this movie didn't even come out yet and people were having the worst things to say about it. Boy bands used to be critiqued for not being good because of their audience mainly being teen girls. Certain romance novels that were enjoyed by teen girls got so much hate especially in the 2000s. It's sad because this movie for example was so good. It really represented how a 13 y/o girl acted and what we thought about when our bodies and minds started changing on us. They mentioned periods, body odour, crushes, being obsessed over THE smallest things that wouldn't matter to adults but meant the world to us, boy bands, etc. I smiled and cried throughout this entire movie and I just wished people gave it a fair shot before critiquing it when it wasn't even released yet.
@@crunchychicken2 Yeah, I remember when One Direction got a lot of hate around 2010 and BTS getting a lot of hate nowadays. Boybands being hated for appealing to girls isn't even new either, even the Beatles were hated at first because of how many teen and young adult girls loved them, and now they're one of the most iconic boy bands in modern history.
@@crunchychicken2 yeah, real girl tween representations like this gets pushed aside unless it's main character is badass enough for the guys to salivate and get hyped from (unreal characters that girls often get so we grow up confused with out identity). Awesome reaction Turning Red is now my favourite Pixar movie watched it twice now I'm that obsessed with it. Mei is my new fav Pixar protagonist boy did I relate to her!
I was around Mei's age in the early 2000s. I felt the nostalgia 100% haha my first concert was Backstreet Boys, luckily my mother wasn't like hers lol. This movie was so funny and hit the feelings in a different way than other Pixar movies, maybe because I can relate to it
I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason. But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time. (Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.) People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them. If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.
I understand where Maylyn is coming from not from a cultural standpoint but as a person who cares about her mother's opinion so much that she will do anything for her mother and not for anything for her own self-interest.

During my teen years. I felt like I didn’t know what interests I had. I felt like I wanted to fit in with my community but the more I grew the more I learned that we were raised differently and I should embrace myself.
It was really predictable that she's gonna keep being a red panda, but I did not see coming when her mom became a panda THAT big! A kaiju size! 🤣 I thought it's just the size of a two-story house.
I cried because i can relate and now i'm 16 and i still feel that way where i don't know how to tell my feelings to my family because no one would listen to me
Yaaaaaaaay, thank y'all for your wonderful reactions to this film! Fun fact: The number 4 is considered unlucky because in Mandarin it sounds similar to the word "death." Huzzah!! Edit: Jesse from Full House was--and still is--HOT. I also had a crush (maaaaaybe many crushes) on an animated character, but it was Trunks from DBZ. I even drew tons of fanart of animated "crushes." Yes we do feel like that about K pop bands, I feel personally called out by this movie ! Mind you, a lot of us are not teens, I don't know any fans that are! I'm 53 (oldest I know is 74)
I think they set it in 2002 because it's based on the life of one of the creators. And because setting it in today's world would have to deal with Twitter, TikTok, and TH-cam.
I was a bit older than Mei in 2002 (that was the year I graduated high school), but as someone who was once a 13 year old girl, I found this to be SUPER relatable. My friend group in 8th grade was JUST like this. We were obsessed with N'SYNC and the Spice Girls and would often come up with dances at school. I know the scene in the beginning when they do a little dance-off was cheesy, but it was 100% something my friends and I did.
It's funny because in 2002 I was younger than Mei 🤭 because I was 9 (I'm born in 1993) but I had an old phone, a Tamagotchi (I still have it) and that's the age where my puberty started
I love this film SO much!! Had me feeling so many emotions & reflecting on my experience growing up, & all the representation!! It was so good to see ❤️ watching both your genuine reactions to this honestly brightened up my night, thanks for the great video 😊
I had to lie to my mom for years because she's toxic & controlling. She still has no idea about some of what I hid from her. I never was close to her nor felt comfortable talking to her about things 😕. being raised in a cult is jus great 🙃/s
that's the thing about strict, helicopter, tiger parents. Their kids will only turn out to be good liars or eventually manipulators, even though the parents think they're doing the best for their children, it's still not the right method for parenting, but that's the only way they know how to raise a child, most likely because that's how the parents were raised by **their** parents as well. Hopefully when you grow up and have kids on your own, you don't project that to your children
@@teru_9921 A: I'm gonna be 20 soon. B: not everyone in those situations become manipulators C: I'm not gonna have kids but if I adopt I'd never treat them the way I was raised. In fact being raised how I was while being able to think for myself n use my stubbornness to my advantage is why I have the hatred for ppl like that. 👀 Luckily I also escaped the cult I was raised in as well.
Loved your reactions! I freaking loved this movie, I was smiling the whole time lol. Of course, except the part where I was screaming in horror at the convenience store scene 😆
It was rather irresponsible of Ming not to warn Mei about the panda. To her credit it seems like this happened much earlier than normal, but she could of done something. She could of framed it as some bedtime fairy tail that Mei wouldn't take seriously growing up, but would of given her some clue as to what was going on when it manifested. Ming also failed to notice the signs, even though she watches her daughter closely. She didn't notice Mei's eyebrows had turned red or the beanie Mei opted to wear on a warm day, as well as her strange behavior after her freakout that morning. Although the behavior might be a mask she normally wears around her mother.
She should have noticed the eyebrows for sure. Otherwise, Mei had completely bamboozled her, living like a wholly different person when away from home.
May 24th is my birthday. May 25th is my god-daughters. This movie actually speaks more about immigrant Asian families in general. I tried to be perfect and did my best in school. Because I did that, I was always alone and separate from everyone else. I broke and did a bad thing. I was tired of trying to please others and not myself in the process. This movie brought back those times and packaged them into a palatable movie.
yes thats how Kpop stans feel when they go to concerts 🤣 4Town reminded me of a Kpop group and about how I feel about my faves 😅 also of course that super catchy song was written by Billie Eilish and Finneas, also love that Finneas was one of the 4town memebers lol
watching this movie with my mom, especially her being a teen still i 2002 (shit year i was born as well) she kept saying "oh honey" and things like that so you know its a movie that has its connection to women more so than man (not to say we men can't enjoy it and maybe learn a thing or two from it). and its funny cause this film does have the disney twist to puberty and.....what my mom used to call the "red dragon"
Bro, Topanga was soooo hot! Also, the Writer/Director is a Chinese-Canadian woman who was born in 1989, so she was 13 in 2002. That's why this was so relatable for women about their puberty.
I saw the notification yesterday but waited today to watch the reaction since i just got the time to watch the movie today. Mirabel is a mood for me 😂 i love her cameo 😂 anyway asian parent's motto is always "meet the expectations or you're a failure" 😢
Y’know I’ve actually seen some people say “well her grades did start slipping so her mom has a point” or whatever and it’s like she’s still getting a B+. She is still making good grades. Having straight As, especially in middle school, will mean absolutely nothing when you go to college and get burnout because you never got to properly enjoy your childhood and worked too hard from a young age.
When mai mai was pulling her mother to the circle vwith her aunties and grandmother and THEN when four town start to sing to and in that second mei mei s face is absaloutely haliarous she was Like tearing up and Like idk you seen IT BUT IT WAS pretty pricless
0:55 They ARE in this day and age, but there is absolutely no reason for most of their modern films to be rated PG in my opinion. This film actually earned it. Don't get me wrong, they're all still great films, but they should be G.
I keep hearing how this movie gets hate (thought not exactly _what_ was hated) and... I don't get it. Outside of whiny complaints about 'cultural appropriation' B.S. (which is _utter_ nonsense anyway), I can't see anything wrong with _any_ of it. The characters in it are _believable_ and _relatable._ Any complaint about this movie would be, I'm guessing, a complaint that these characters where _super heroes_ with no flaws, that they were _human_ (while also being _pandas,_ of course). It just... is _such_ a good show, I think anyone who finds something objectionable about the _content_ of the movie honestly has their nose out of joint for no good reason. I _also_ think that this is _showing,_ but not actually _dealing with_ one of the _biggest_ problems in society and growing up: communication. Be it the panda or a period, the fact remains that parents and teachers are _not talking_ to young girls (or, at least, weren't, unsure if this is different _now_ or not) about what's coming _before_ it happens, and _also_ making a big deal out of what is ultimately _not_ a big deal. When Ming thought Meilin was having her period, both Ming _and_ Jin _freaked out_ about it, getting uptight, trying to back away, and so on. That is, absolutely, the _wrong_ message to be sending! It's the wrong way to _deal_ with something like this. Imagine the sort of trauma that would inflict if they did the same thing over her _going to the bathroom,_ or throwing up when sick, or anything of that sort! It isn't, in _any_ way, either _helpful_ or _useful_ to _either_ the parents _or_ the child in that situation. It's a _freaking period!_ It happens to _all_ girls! (Well, okay, most, as in if it _doesn't_ there's something _wrong_ with said girl.) It's kinda sickening, really, to make someone feel _embarrassed_ or _ashamed_ for being _human._ _At the same time,_ I _fully_ agree the mother should _not_ be showing up to school, _in front of the whole class,_ and pulling out _pads!_ I understand, a bit, _why_ she did it given her perspective on all this. She basically was, at first, trying to find a way to _sneak_ the pads to her daughter, was _so_ freaked out she didn't _think_ about going to the office and having them call her down to pick up the pads... and possibly a cookie, so she'd have an excuse to _go to_ the office that wasn't privacy related, so she could tell her friends or anyone who asked that her mother found part of her lunch in the car and was returning it. Still, through all of that she felt it was important to _get_ the pads _to_ her to _prevent_ embarrassment. But _even with_ this being _not a big deal,_ it, _at the same time,_ would be like showing up and holding aloft for the world to see your _underwear!_ I mean... yeah, underwear isn't a big deal, but it's _also_ not something you should be showing everyone in class, thank-you-very-much.
The visuals for when Mei is leading the teenage version of her mother through the bamboo forest / ancestral plane reminds me a little of a combination of "Spirited Away" and "Elfin Lied".
I'll give the film a solid 7/10, the views are not great only because the haters are the loudest, and the subject of the theme gives people A LOT to hate. Even for me the cringness or even stupidness of the whole teenager thing and the popstar thing are full of red flags and annoyed me so much, almost as much as those "this is BAD-my taste is good this film dosen't meet my taste-Pixer be slopping " people .
Being Okinawan-American seeing some of this movie with you guys, 1. You haven't seen Vietnamese/Chinese moms and it shows lol 2. I used to do cringe things as a kid, only I am diagnosed autistic so my weirdness is even hated by my mom when they aren't cute symptoms 3. I had texted a guy I literally paid to pretend to be my girlfriend in middle school because I'm not into guys but I did get my first kiss stolen by this girl in high school so it's funny back then. 4. The way periods are handled feels weird since I just keep it casual and ended up having a guy classmate escourt me flipping the prude female teacher off from having a bad stain but the guy was chill and had supplies and the teacher never let people go to the bathroom. 5. Overall a lot of problems come up, but I like the traditional iterations of gods they did!
I have never ever stanned a boyband in my entire life, yet this movie made me feel like a 14 year old with 4town posters in my bedroom and the playlist on my ipod 😂
This film even got the girl school uniform for private catholic school right! But I don't think Toronto was this "pink" back in the late 90's (I was studying there at that period".

That or the usually femme fatale vs not-like-other-girl girls (or just simply the many _many_ female protagonists who are always a badass not-like-other-girl) where femininity is demonized.
Boys can like stereotypical ‘girl’ movies too. This isn’t a boy’s or a girl’s movie. It’s a movie for everyone.
Idk why i almost cried about the quiet scene when Jin told Mei the real reason why the Grandma and Ming fought 😣😣
It was a 2002 Period piece about PERIODS!! Great review guys, I'm not too familiar with ur names yet, but the guy that was saying he didn't know if he could relate, watch back your review all you're laughter you're smiles your joy as you watched it, that's YOU relating to the movie, so you can and you did relate 👍🏾
This movie was so funny and hit the feelings in a different way than other Pixar movies, maybe because I can relate to it
Honestly surprisingly good. I laughed out loud multiple times, and I really didn’t expect to tbh. And the message was really compelling too
Love your vids! Can't wait to watch this. Hope you have a nice day
Hi Tim😊
She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.)
People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact.
Wow, is this the fifth reaction you’ve posted the same copy-paste word-for-word comment?
@@katarinawikholm5873 dude I’ve already explained myself why I did it so many times it’s because I’m sharing my side of the story to the TH-camrs that watch this movie. OK I’m sorry if it’s copy and paste of what I said to other TH-camrs but I just wanna tell all the TH-camrs that I know and love and then I watch all the videos how I feel about this movie and it’s literally the same thing. so get off my back. Report me if you think I’m so annoying. I’m just trying to share my thoughts and opinions.
I really LOVE how the IN-BETWEEN ANIMATIONS made.. like all the Traditional Black and White sequence.. OH MY GOODNESS
Especially the obvious one, the part where all the aunties transform into red pandas.
You can pause it to see.. so AWESOME. ✨✨
When she said Backstreet Boys. Nsync.
I just thought hey here's my generation.
Then she said 'or my generation is One Direction'
I be like damn I'm old 🤣
During my teen years.
I even drew tons of fanart of animated "crushes." Laaaaaame, lol!
Yes we do feel like that about K pop bands, I feel personally called out by this movie ! Mind you, a lot of us are not teens, I don't know any fans that are! I'm 53 (oldest I know is 74)
I think they set it in 2002 because it's based on the life of one of the creators. And because setting it in today's world would have to deal with Twitter, TikTok, and TH-cam.
10:48 Ming: Tell him you forgot your pads!

Oooh damn, did not expect this. I’d be down for more Pixar reactions 👀. Keep up the awesome videos!
I love this film SO much!! Had me feeling so many emotions & reflecting on my experience growing up, & all the representation!! It was so good to see ❤️ watching both your genuine reactions to this honestly brightened up my night, thanks for the great video 😊
i like the scene where Mei tries to leave and her aunts and mom are pulling her back. LITERALLY her family holding her back.
7:04 Yes, Sandra Oh is the voice of the mother
I knew it. I can hear her hhha
@@marka8817 Once i learned, i couldn't stop thinking about Mark's mom.
B: not everyone in those situations become manipulators
C: I'm not gonna have kids but if I adopt I'd never treat them the way I was raised. In fact being raised how I was while being able to think for myself n use my stubbornness to my advantage is why I have the hatred for ppl like that. 👀 Luckily I also escaped the cult I was raised in as well.
@@mylife-23 what cult?

@@mylife-23 ahh. Understandable.
I love this movie. Even though I'm a guy, I'm an Asian guy and I do relate with the whole "Tiger Mom" aspect, having a mother like Ming.
Loved your reactions! I freaking loved this movie, I was smiling the whole time lol. Of course, except the part where I was screaming in horror at the convenience store scene 😆
3:40 fun fact he’s the oldest and has 2 kids. Yes this is canon they have a official page with some information about the 4town group
He HAS KIDS? HOW OLD ARE THEY?
@@ohnaminami probably 20+
I really loved this movie, it can be really relatable for girls who go through similar things
Lmao you don't know what gay peeps are going through
It was rather irresponsible of Ming not to warn Mei about the panda.
Otherwise, Mei had completely bamboozled her, living like a wholly different person when away from home.
the amazing part of the ritual is any song will suffice as long as you sing it from the heart...
"What's my mom gonna do? Ground me? Hahahahahhahah
Ming: So you've chosen, *D E A T H*
35:00 I had the same reaction, my guy. I was shocked from this sudden kaiju finale. 😆
Between Master Shifu, Aggretsuko, Sody Pop, Stufful/Bewear and this, I’m noticing a pattern…
You guys have become my new favorite reactors! Great reaction
That mom was giant. Me and my sister laughed so hard when we saw the mom walking to the concert qs the panda
The mom looks so cute with red hair xD
I just realized this is like the movie Teen Wolf (1985).
I just commented about that. Glad I'm not the only one to notice. It's very similar in a lot of ways which is okay by me, I love that movie.
watched this with my gf today and I actually liked it alot, my fav part is when the mom lets her panda out
watching this movie with my mom, especially her being a teen still i 2002 (shit year i was born as well) she kept saying "oh honey" and things like that so you know its a movie that has its connection to women more so than man (not to say we men can't enjoy it and maybe learn a thing or two from it). and its funny cause this film does have the disney twist to puberty and.....what my mom used to call the "red dragon"
Topanga was everybody's first crush dude, it's ok you are amongst friends.
Having straight As, especially in middle school, will mean absolutely nothing when you go to college and get burnout because you never got to properly enjoy your childhood and worked too hard from a young age.
the number 4 is unlucky in chinese culture, thats why the grandma said so unlucky
"Avengers Assemble!"
More like:
"Aunties Assemble!"
Pandas assemble!
When mai mai was pulling her mother to the circle vwith her aunties and grandmother and THEN when four town start to sing to and in that second mei mei s face is absaloutely haliarous she was Like tearing up and Like idk you seen IT BUT IT WAS pretty pricless
Your videos make me happy and laugh and forget about the pain I am in I lost my left leg because of cancer in 2021
-Or my generation’s New Kids on the Block 🤣
- I hate cleaning but love new cleaning stuff.
0:55 They ARE in this day and age, but there is absolutely no reason for most of their modern films to be rated PG in my opinion. This film actually earned it.
Don't get me wrong, they're all still great films, but they should be G.
Thanks for letting us watch
(Well, okay, most, as in if it _doesn't_ there's something _wrong_ with said girl.) It's kinda sickening, really, to make someone feel _embarrassed_ or _ashamed_ for being _human._
_At the same time,_ I _fully_ agree the mother should _not_ be showing up to school, _in front of the whole class,_ and pulling out _pads!_ I understand, a bit, _why_ she did it given her perspective on all this.
This movie is very deep. Its like Up but regarding teeneger period.
The visuals for when Mei is leading the teenage version of her mother through the bamboo forest / ancestral plane reminds me a little of a combination of "Spirited Away" and "Elfin Lied".
Just watched this movie, loved it!
Really really loved that movie! Didn't have such a good time with a movie in a while.
I love the name meimei btw it’s such a cute adorable name
Her mom has the Broly Panda 🤣🤣
4-town definitely reminded me of my one direction phase when i was 6 ☠️
this movie was great, I love how they set it in the early 2000s
I’m soo happy to see y’all watch the movie I just fell in love with😅
Love this film. It's currently tied with Incredibles for my #2 favorite Pixar movie.
Awesome reactions as always! I enjoyed this movie!
Being Okinawan-American seeing some of this movie with you guys,
1. You haven't seen Vietnamese/Chinese moms and it shows lol
2. I used to do cringe things as a kid, only I am diagnosed autistic so my weirdness is even hated by my mom when they aren't cute symptoms
I want a sequel, but I understand this can stand alone on its own
This film even got the girl school uniform for private catholic school right! But I don't think Toronto was this "pink" back in the late 90's (I was studying there at that period".
I feel like this movie is more popular than Encanto and Encanto is getting forgotten. It shouldn’t be 😩
oh my god jim from treasure planet was also my first crush too..
When I was a kid I draw semi trucks and trains on my school paper the teacher always knew it is my paper
Your generation is One Direction? I can't be older than you two, CAN I? No... No way... What happened to NSYNC?
7:04-7:07 yes, that’s Sandra Oh. 7:30 😆 35:28 anime 😭 36:21 that hurts. 36:35-36:38 confronts 36:42-36:44 roaring 36:58 headbutt 39:22 forgiveness

This wasnt on my asian movie watch list. (After yang, Uma and everything everywhere all at once) im bored today and since u reacted to it i tried to watch it and It hit different when you're asian when it comes to family tradition 😑 also even tho this was made for girls it's still entertaining, very nostalgic for 2000's era being the band is like Nsync 🤣 also they gave tyler a friendship bracelet too..
I heard they remove w2w scenes which lessen its representation but i still notice some esp wd priya. Her friends grp are amazing
I wasn’t feeling the animation style when the trailer came out but I still loved the movie
