Meris Mercury 7 - Is it Any Good?

  • For my Presets visit: johnnathancordy.gumroad.com/ Since I found out from ‪@jhspedals‬ videos that the Meris Pedals founder Angelo Mazzocco was responsible for the Line 6 Verbzilla (and the legacy reverbs found in the Helix, I've been interested to try a Meris reverb. So the Mercury 7 made most sense, given that it seems to suit my attraction to long spacey reverbs. Here's the first time plugging it in.

    I’ve had this for a while and honestly in a world full of multi preset uber deluxe reverb pedals this thing doesn’t leave me wanting. It just nails it with its clear concise tone, damn near perfect auto swell, and it’s clean modern approach, well done Meris! One for the dreamers and the traditionalists alike..

      @@matthewmp111 yes Matt, am still using it and happy to recommend it, it is definitely a keeper. I’m sure I’ll get distracted by some of the newer pedals on the block like the Dreadbox Darkness and the Strymon Cloudburst etc but I know I’ll always come back to the Mercury7 so happy with my choice either way.

    • @kruser32

      @Shane White you mention it has a perfect auto swell. I picked up a M7 used and I cannot get a decent swell sound. It lowers the volume and kind of kills my signal a little bit. Do you have settings you can recommend for auto swell? Maybe the person sold it because the swell doesn’t work right. Also, when I turn the mix near to max and then full max I lose the clean signal completely. Is this normal for this pedal? Thank you

    • @shanewhite3820
      @shanewhite3820 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@kruser32 well I’d love to give a definitive answer but I too have definitely had my share of WTF moments with this pedal. My opinion is purely subjective of course but my preferred application is to bridge my mono pedals into stereo then add a panning or ping pong delay after the effect. The reverb sounds fantastic on its own but the buffered outputs feed my stereo effects better (read - “full bodied”) than without. It’s worth noting the TRS stereo input sums to mono anyway (pre-reverb) so pedal order will play a big role in whether you will benefit from what this pedal has to offer. My biggest gripe was while experimenting with mono/stereo input and pedal order the sound/volume and swell sensitivity would change dramatically driving me full blown proper crazy…so when I finally connected the dots the sound was to taste and the touch sensitivity was spot on regardless of how hard or clean I hit the input. I run the mix somewhere around the middle, your mileage may differ. I’ve got a lame video on my channel that may give you some sort of context/perspective, I hope this helps, have fun! 😀😀

    Thank you for this awesome video! I finally bought the M7 and i love it.
    One question: the decaytime at the octave down setting seems to be significant shorter than at „off“ or compared to the other pitch settings. Did you experience the same? Is this normal or perhaps a malfunction?

    • @noahgotlibowski1343
      @noahgotlibowski1343 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @morbhium8902
      @morbhium8902 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@noahgotlibowski1343 Hey Noah! I contacted Meris and they answered instantly and very kind btw. I was told that it might seem to be a shorter decay because of a perpetually downshifting of the reverb in octaves. So it’s getting faster below a hearable frequency and is harder to hear. That makes sense and i noticed the downshifting but i wished it would stay longer just one octave deeper like the slö does.
      „What you can do is increase the Lo Frequency, decrease Hi Frequency, and increase the Density (alt function) to amplify the octave down.
      It also helps to play around with the Attack, Predelay and Modulate knob to get bigger sounds.“
      I am wondering that nobody in the demos and reviews talks about this issue.
      Hope that helps. What do you think?

  • @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist
    @AlecBourneMidiMadScientist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    My question for you with this pedal is do you feel you are gaining anything in ease of use ? What with the alt button etc, is this something you could see getting enough out of down on the floor within a pedalboard - or is it something you’d want up on your pedal holder all the time? Similar experiences with the iridium which is undoubtably faster to dial in, or would you be just as fast dialing in on HXStomp for example ?

    Nice, I have this on my board in the loop of my hx stomp its a fantastic sounding reverb and has a ton of range for 2 types of reverb. I agree with you and others the shimmer pitch seems off but im not fussed i don't like shimmer reverb much i like the pitch down if im going to use the vectors. I also have the meris polymoon before the mercury 7 and i would say its an incredible delay but its taken me ages to get to grips with it. Its a lot more complex with its different combinations of delay modulation, if you do try it i find the dimension (delay smear) dial is pretty important to tame it with guitar when using the more crazy sounds with it. It can accomplish some pretty interesting reverb/delay sounds that you cant really get anywhere else.

      @aubinvanns6632 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I've had the M7 and the Collider. M7 was beautiful and top of my list. The lack of built-in presets is annoying but there are ways around it. Collider is high quality but less inspiring - also had some weirdness when switching betwen presets, and unexpected behaviour when trying to match levels between delay and reverb. Maybe the Ventris is better because it's trying to do less.
      If you genuinely need a variety of high quality reverbs including spring, then get the Source Audio. But if you want just one exceptional reverb to get lost in, the M7 is perfect.
      Top tip though, the max. decay is reduced when you use the pitch vector, so I always used it without for really big sounds.

      The night sky has a lot more features but as far as just the straight reverb sounds go, this one takes it. It’s so forgiving and you don’t have to be good to use it, the pedal is an instrument in and of itself. It never gets muddy unless you want it too and the swell is the best I’ve ever heard.
