Another quality video. I must try a phrag again. I flowered a P. pearcei a while back, having grown it from a seedling. It lived with my disas in the 'wet corner' lol. I gave it to a good friend who wanted a division as I knew it shouldn't be divided. Yes, you have convinced me. I need another in my life! PS The repotting schedule makes sense but I must confess that I didn't do it! Thank you for sharing.
Oh this is just wonderful! I'm jealous of your small pots. I've got a bel Croute in a cut off gallon vinegar container and the roots are so plentiful that they started deforming the pot in about 6 monts. It's in spike for the first time and it's sooo tall and I'm sooo excited so I had to come watch phrag videos.
just came across this as I am planning to repot my phrags soon. I have about 15 various types of them so timing was excellent and a very educational video it is. keep up the good information!
I love your vids, Wade. Videography takes second place to your knowledge and dedication as a long time hobby grower. I always learn something and I look forward to your new videos. Love that dwarf Phrag! How cool is that? I can't wait to see that new greenhouse of yours all filled up. Cheers.
Hi wade: I have a phragmipedium eric young and it's been growing well in semihydroponics, and he seems to like it. I use one gallon of rain water mixed with 1/2 cap of seaweed extract & 1/4 tsp fish emulsion . this is added to my reservoir. I flush out reservoir with plan water once a month. seems to be a happy plant. I love your videos!
Jayne Scanzano Glad it's doing well for you! It doesn't surprise me that it's doing well in semi hydro. They really like being wet. I try to keep saucers under most of my Phrags. An update on the Sorcerers Apprentice. It presently has 2 spikes with each spike having about 3 flowers open at any given time. It is easily the most rewarding plant in the greenhouse.
They don't sell online Wade :( they are a little local orchid shop that focuses mainly on their 'in bloom' orchids for sale. After the blooms are done, they go in the discount area: phrags, vandas, paphs, and cattleyas are $10 and all other orchids are $5. I go every week! I got the only phrag they had and it was a NOID.
Thank you. I've had a Phrag. Longifolium for years that hasn't ever done well. I'm going to repot it and use your culture recommendations and see how it goes.
Thanks so much Wade, I will keep in touch. I just started using dyna, up from love orchids fertilizer...my yellow birds are in bloom, probably seasonal blooming and not the fertilizers.
Nice repotting video Wade, I was going to ask you about fertilizer but you touch on that at the end. My Sorcerers Apprentice is doing well can't wait to see it bloom ;)
Antonia Orchids I hope I have helped you. I have seen instances where a plant is just reluctant to bloom but longifolium does very well for me. I am giving it a ot of light - enough to bloom Vandas - so maybe that's it. I've heard several knowledgeable people say that if a plant looks healthy and won't bloom it's usually because of not getting enough light. Having said that, I don't want you to burn your plant. Please send me an email at wadeh1954@gmail.com if you have any questions that you think I can help with. Good luck!!!
Wade, can I grow this orchids in Manila with daily average temperature of 30°C with humidity of 70-80% ? I noticed that it only grows in our provinces particularly in cool mountainous places.
A very indepth presentation. I really would like to know what type of liquid fertilizer you use, if that's not asking too much of you. You have given a lot already. Thanks,
SHARON SHORT Thank you, Sharon. I use MSU fertilizer for pure water for all my plants. I water at 1/2 teaspoon/gallon once per week during spring, summer, and fall and and once per 2 weeks during winter. I also make sure I thoroughly flush the plants at least once per month. There is also an MSU formula for well (or hard) water. This blend of fertilizer is available from quite a few sources. I use First Ray's. Please bear in mind that if you grow in the home you probably don't need that much fertilizer. I'll be happy to discuss this further if you like either here or you can email me at wadeh1954@gmail.com.
Very educational Wade. Thank you. I will make sure my Eric Young with have his feet wet. How often do you fertilize with osmocote? Do you not use orchid fertilizer?
***** I only use the Osmocote when I repot. It is intended as a supplement and not a replacement for my regular liquid fertilizer. What happens is that I repot in the spring and the Osmocote lasts about 3-4 months which covers the summer when the orchids are needing the most nutrients. Mature plants especially might need a bit more than my weekly liquid feeding. If they don't it gets rinsed away because I do at least 1 thorough watering between each feeding where excess salts get washed away.
Hi Wade, really enjoying your videos! I have two Paphs, but I don't think I've been keeping them wet enough, so they'll be getting saucers with water soon. You mentioned adding bone meal to the mix. Is that only when you repot? Also, how much? Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge!
JustUs Paphs and Phrags may look similar but they don't grow the same. Just keep your Paphs a bit on the moist side and you'll be fine. Also, Paphs don't need nearly as much light as Phrags. As for the bone meal, I only use what is in the potting mix when I repot and it is a very small amount. Thanks for watching the video!!!
Just watched that part of the video. I was trimming dead roots that were "squishy". If you trim live roots it's not a problem because they will branch.
Thanks for the video Wade, these are some orchids I am pretty scared of but maybe I will try them one day :) btw it's Phragmipedium, no L in its name as a small correction ;)
MissOrchidGirl You caught me, Dani. I was putting this together "in the wee hours" and my spelling is the first thing to go. The primary hybrids are probably the easiest to flower and they can reward you all year long if it's a consecutive bloomer.
Thank you. I've had a Phrag. Longifolium for years that hasn't ever done well. I'm going to repot it and use your culture recommendations and see how it goes.

Wade, thank you for another incredible video! I always get so excited to see one of your videos in my subscription feed.

Thank you Wade, my local orchid store sells this out of flower for $10 and I think you have convinced me to go today and get one!
Arlene Ontiveros I'm glad you liked the video, Arlene. $10.00 is a steal! Does your local orchid store sell online? My Phrags are $20. - $30.

Wow, your Phrags. longifolium are gorgeous! I own two and sometimes I have no idea of what I'm doing with them... Thanks for the video!

Wade's Orchids Thank you very much! I definitely will :D

Thank you Wade! Can you tell me which osmacote you use? Is is specific for orchids? Or is it the general one for flower and vegetable? Thank you.
It's the one with the pink label. It has micronutrients.

Thank you. I have a Phrag. Grammifolia
Love phrags but so expensive.
Why do you remove roots that aren't dead???
Just watched that part of the video. I was trimming dead roots that were "squishy". If you trim live roots it's not a problem because they will branch.

Wade's Orchids I so want a red variety like the bessae, not sure how fussy they are though, we'll see :)
MissOrchidGirl I just bought a Jason Fischer, I will have to let you know how it goes
Tim Pinkelman That's great!!! I'm sure you'll love it. Let me know if you have any questions.
