    One the topic of getting a new snake after one dies, my first snake (a corn snake) escaped, and I was really sad/upset about it, about a month later we went to a reptile show and my dad bought me this king snake, since we hadn't took down the enclosure and it was the perfect size for both. Then the corn snake shows up, healthy and alive, we got a new tank and supplies, and I now have 2 snakes.

    I do have one thing to say about the "rescuing" from pet stores. Sure, it's not really rescuing, but if the animal is mostly grown and has had the price dropped (maybe multiple times), the store has already decided it's something they're not gonna buy again. They've been sitting on it for months, at least, so when you buy it for like half price or less, they aren't really seeing that as a win, other than the fact that they can finally get rid of that animal.

    • @Temperdoodle
      @Temperdoodle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      As someone who used to be in charge of ordering for a pet store, this is fairly accurate, the only exception being that sometimes the market is just flooded, which means we won't sell that reptile again for a while but eventually we'll bring it back. This happened with pacman frogs a lot in my district. But yeah that particular animal is already considered a loss, and I often gave them away for free to anyone who was willing to buy the proper supplies, or who could prove they already had everything they needed

      When I was in my early teens we bought a purebred standard poodle from a pet shop. He was like eight months old and only cost like 600. I think it was because his tail was botched (he arrived at the pet shop that way when he was like two months??). Anyway we had to give him to the poodle rescue league after a few months because he was neurotic :( like he would run into walls, he would walk funny and poop everywhere without even squatting. We really tried but being in a small glass cage for 8 months really messed him up. We were experienced with dogs and thought we could give him a home. I hope he got help because he was such a sweetie. I am in my early 30s now and still think about him

    I have a 6 year old gold dust corn snake named Khaleesi. She’s now around 5.5 feet, super spoiled, husbandry on point, etc. When I bought her I did quite a bit of research before buying (it wasn’t a spur of the moment decision to purchase a snake). When I went to purchase, the store I bought from (most reputable place in the greater metropolitan area; not Petsmart) ENCOURAGED me to purchase two. So, I did. These were the experts, right? So I went home with two juvenile corn snakes. Needless to say, Cersei did NOT last very long (maybe 3 weeks?). I felt awful about it TBH. PLEASE don’t house snakes together!

      The thing is you just can’t trust anyone. They probably just wanted the sale. Even “reputable” places are still businesses and you don’t know for sure if they’re just trying to sell you something or if they actually care about the well being of the animal you buy. That’s why most places will give you refund only within 30 days, because the animal will probably last that long and then die from whatever issue a little later, and then they don’t have to give you money. After buying my first reptile (bearded dragon) from petco, I now know to never buy an animal from any pet store. I will only trust breeders. My bearded dragon had tail rot when I got her and I was a total beginner and had to learn how to take care of her while trying to save her life at the same time. Luckily I noticed it very early and got to the vet and got antibiotics, and I also did a treatment on the tail itself, and now she’s three years old and super healthy and happy (and an absolute crackhead, she has so much energy), but I would never want to go through that again, and I don’t wish it on anyone. The first year of having my beardie was insanely difficult and stressful, and I know it would have been easier if I had gotten one from a breeder. This is the kind of stuff you learn from experience unfortunately, and I’m just lucky that she ended up being okay. By the time I figured it out I’d had her for a couple weeks and I was already attached, I didn’t want to give her back for a refund and I would have been devastated if she died. Never again. I have plans to get a ball python soon and I already have found a good breeder that is local to me, so I know this time it’s gonna be much smoother. I also remember the people at petco gave me some very bad information about bearded dragons, but even then I knew at least not to listen to them, and I had already done my research. There are some things that research won’t prepare you for though

      ....the majority of snake species love being kept together, to cuddle for warmth among other reasons, I can't read snake emotions but my corn snakes seem to get very depressed and sad when I take one out for any length of time, I love finding snakes in the wild, and sometimes I would find ten of them huddled together in one small crevice, except of course, in the spring time when they will fight for their personal space, or if it's too warm in their location or enclosure, they will fight as well, I have never ever had a problem with a snake eating, even wild caught ones, so I truly never understood that, but I have advised people with other types of animals, after seeing them stress the animal out trying to force it to eat out of concern, or try to feed it too soon after it doesn't eat, a child even will have bad eating habits if the parent stress them out too much during feeding, or is visibly stressed themselves every time they feed the child, I'm guessing with snakes though a snake can go a while between feedings, some people might get stressed out thinking that something is wrong, and try again in a few hours, and the next day, and the day after, and the snake may relate the food to the person that's annoying and stressing them out, especially if it's a new pet, if I put a mouse in and it's not eaten, I won't try again for two to three days, I wish I had a definite answer for it though big bruh, but I've never had a snake that wasn't a great eater so I haven't solved that one yet.

    On the art commissions things, you're absolutely right! Kinda. I speak from a year of experience taking commissions. Most artist would like to charge more and push other artists to charge more, the problem is that the consumers don't want to pay that much, specially to smaller artists. I think its just very important for people commissioning to tip what they think the art is actually worth so the artist can be sure that if they had higher prices people would still buy their art.

If you decide to keep corn snakes together make sure you give them a campfire and s’more making equipment because in the wild corn snakes are known to eat s’mores around a campfire with their fellow snakes. Also make sure that you give the snakes a lot of vertical height so they have enough room to fly around and breath fire.One more thing make sure you have a tv in there so that they can both cuddle up and watch their favorite shows ( my snakes favorite show is the office). I hope this enlightened you about cohabitating cornsnakes.

    I don't understand why people want scaleless reptiles.
    I mean, I have a sandfish skink. He is super slippery and really fast, and it is HELL any time I need to take him out to give him a checkup. His scales scratch really easilly too, and he is very easilly stressed and if there is anything to hurt himself on in the terrarium, he will do it like within minutes!
    So whyyyy would anyone want scaleless? The very thought gives me anxiety. It is hard enough when they just have sensitive scales.

    • @emchelle
      @emchelle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I have a scaleless corn snake (not acquired intentionally, but a breeding program drop-out that needed a home). There's really nothing about him that is inherently more worrisome or fragile. I am careful about really scratchy or pokey decorations, but it's not because I think he'd press his body hard enough against anything that he'd hurt himself (I mean, why would he, scaleless snakes can definitely still feel pain) but because I worry about his still somewhat skittish nature and him hitting something if he wanted to move very quickly. Not a huge concern, and it's really the only precaution that I have to specifically take for him. He still explores, climbs, burrows, etc.
      I really don't know how I feel about them being bred for that trait alone, but it's not as dangerous to the animal as, say, some of the morphs with neurological effects.

    • @emchelle
      @emchelle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Sharpclaw2000 Skin is different from scales, but his skin is not dangerously delicate or fragile. I've lived with him (and his scaleless sister) for years with nary a scratch on either of them, despite enclosures with lots of different textures and enrichment options. Scaleless corns do still have belly scales, and usually scales around their mouth and nostrils, so the lack of scales on their backs and sides has no real impact on their normal behaviors.
      As I said in another comment, I think scaleless snakes would probably be less tolerant of really dangerous or shitty enclosures, but this has been an observed mutation in adult wild snakes, so any captive environment safe enough for a scaled snake would be safe enough for a scaleless snake.

    • @Sharpclaw2000

    I have two rescued female cornsnakes who are co-hab because they had spent their entire lives together (they're both ~11 now) and were rescued together as well. Despite my two girls doing really well together & becoming noticeably confused and irritable when separate, I would never EVER recommend to co-hab corns. Their spatial requirements are so manageable even when they're full grown, so there really aren't any good excuses to try and co-hab two or more corns who have already been solitary. If it weren't for my corns being both female with their background and as old as they are, I would've gone through a lot more trouble insisting they were separated.

    When my old female leopard gecko was dying, her partner (still alive to this day) layed on top of her, as if trying to warm her cooling down body up... He only eventually left when her heart stopped beating... so yeah, reptiles can show love and attachment and You can cohabit them.... but these are few and far between and most reptiles are solitary by nature and should not be kept in pairs or groups... unless they are garter sneks, but yeah, garters =/= corns, that was probably a bad idea. My ball python lady likes to be left alone 99% of the time, but when the 1% happens, she's super explorative, curious and trusting of me and my father (the 2 ppl she feels the most comfortable around), at times begging to be let out if her (quite big, just enough for a snake of her species and size, with 2 comfortable hides she loves more than I love pepperoni pizza XD) terrarium, she actively searches for either of us and actually shows at times she kinda likes to be pet (when in "ok, I'll tolerate touch and not slither away" mood XD) She once had a "clash" with my father, when she was still pretty much a hatchling, but she quickly realises he means no harm and got used to his pressence too XD Reptiles are really far more complex than ppl give them credit for. Sure, You can't expect them to think like a cat or dog would, but when You'll learn how reptiles think and process informations, they suddenly seem much more "advanced" than their evolutionary line actually is :-)

So I took it home, put it into a nice dark quarantine tank, and happened to walk by with a live adult mouse a few minutes later. The poor scrawny snake went crazy. I dropped the mouse in to see if it would strike, even though it hadn't had time to get comfortable, and the mouse never landed it was snatched so fast. Suffice to say, the snake fattened back up nicely after being offered food of an appropriate size and heat, and quickly graduated from live mice to pre-killed/warmed weanling rats.

    A lot of people might say this sort of content radiates negative energy unbefitting of a animal focused channel, but really it's because a lot of us like animals, not people. Instead we like laughing at the stupidity of people inferior to us from time to time, am I wrong?

    thought i’d just comment this as a canadian, but snakes are definitely not cheap here. even at pet stores a normal ball python is $150 at least, and same with corn snakes. my corn snake was a bit less, but she was from a pet store, and i paid $125 for her. i’m definitely not complaining because i think they’re worth it! but it’s crazy to me how different it is in canada vs america!

    Ok, as far as cohabbing corns goes… like some other solitary as well as non solitary snakes have been shown to eat better when first hatched if put in duo’s or trios, corns in my experience are the same. But only as newborns and should be separated once both are taking food well. It seems to help them eat better in my opinion but again, only when first hatched and after a week or so should we separately housed. Also, they need to be supervised while eating to make sure one isn’t being dominant over the other. If one is a separation is in order.

      Example of some snakes is garter snakes for social snakes and hognoses for non social as seen on snake discovery.

    I work at a petsmart where unfortunately we are required to follow a whole lot of outdated information per petsmart policy but alot of us at our petsmart bring alot to the store in the knowledge department, kind of the reason I'm here lol. The enclosures we have for cornsnakes aren't the largest so the snakes are in close proximity with each other, and I've seen them be pretty affectionate with each other, maybe the curling in balls with each other is a survival instinct for warmth because they are still babies, I've only met 2 aggressive cornsnakes, a few reclusive boys, but overall they are the sweetest snakes in my opinion. (Obviously I would prefer to have them separate from each other, this is out if my power) I should also mention that we never allow cohabitation when selling, they are solitary animals, but as babies I think they may have different temperaments than when they're grown and mature.

    I rehomed 2 corn snakes that were 7 years old they had been cohabed since they hatched. Had no issue with them. They had a large viv with plenty hides in different areas. Although I always found them together in the same hide. The only issue I found when I first got them was if they were fed in the viv they could strike at each other after eating or go for the others mouse. I ended up feeding them outside the viv and then reintroduced them after 20 minutes and never had any issues doing it.

      @@nightinggale6470 I do agree that handling a snake after feeding can increase stress and also increase the chance of regurgitation. If fed outside the viv correctly their should be no issues. Once fed I allow my snakes to go from the feeding container to their viv without touching them. I worked at an animal college for a lot of years and all their snakes were fed outside their vivs with no issues. It was done to reduce the chance of students being bit by snakes when removing them from their vivs.

      @@nightinggale6470 personally I've only ever been bitten once from a snake and it was my own fault. I have owned and kept snakes and exotic pets for over 17 years and worked with them in my job for the past 9 years.

      Also when people complain about higher prices at chain stores. Yeah love it's appreciated by employees because it deters SOME impulse buys. Not enough though. I would make hamsters cost $100 in a heartbeat if people would quit shoving them into shoebox sized enclosures and neglecting the hell out of them. Reptiles should be like triple the current costs haha

    I had two adult male corn snakes and they used to take turns humping eachother but never tried to hurt eachother. They were also in a 60gal tank with multiple hides, climbing branches, ect.
