I stayed at Nando's in the early 90s - TWICE! This couple had seriously done it up in comparison to how it was. The dining room used to be full of dreadful wall plaques and the rooms were really grotty. Owner was weird and rude. It also had those awful rules about going out by a certain time in the morning and you couldn't get back in before a certain time (we got soaked one day because we were trapped outdoors). Nevertheless it was packed as 1) it was cheap and 2) Stratford is a big tourist trap. This was pre internet days, so you booked from brochures, classifieds, and recommendations. Goes to show how important the rating was in those days and word of mouth. I suspect this couple were suffering from the previous owners as well as the obvious issues.

Well that says something about the level of accommodations you would sleep & spend time at. At age 21, in the mid 1970s I felt confident enough to turn down a room in NYC because it wasnt up to my personal standard. I stayed also at Stratford on the Avon in 1974 in a youth hostel that was cleaner. I styed at B & Bs too in a Month there & nothing was this bad.

@@MizzAugust7 You sound unbelievably snotty. Some people think "I'm only sleeping there so as long as it's clean..." and not everyone has the money to get too picky. As a student I slept in some right dives when I was away, because I worked my way through my studies and just didn't have enough money to be picky.

This is a perfect example of why I'd never own a B&B. It's sooo much work and all the 'little ' things get missed because tasks just become rote. You don't see the dirt anymore. i consider my home clean, but not perfect - in this business rooms HAVE to be perfect! My father had a (successful) restaurant and I'd never! want that business either

I am always amazed the Brits inability to understand, accept and utilizec the English language correctly. Ruth is not aggressive she is assertive. I could go on and on . One of the benefits of being educated in the Queen's English in a Commonwealth country, we learned to say what we mean and refrain from all the passive aggressive niceties the Brit's luv. But I must say ...there is absolutely nothing as sharp as Briitish humour!

I don't recall the towels on the bed in the episode, but it is commonly encountered in more upscale establishments. It may at least give the customer some peace of mind that the towels are clean and have not been splashed in the bathroom by the liquid discharges of the previous occupants or other miscellaneous effluvium.
