    The story behind this video: a couple of weeks ago, i transcribed Hoist the Colours. At one point, Bobby waters sings an F below the staff as a subharmonic.
    I didn’t write it down because I thought it was my ears playing up and didn’t think it was possible - the comments corrected me and I went down a rabbit hole of subharmonic singing and wanted to share it with you all.

So when I read C1, I thought to me: I'm a Baritone and my deepest note is usually around E and I can get a C maybe on 3 days per year. But There are Basses in my choir that can usually go down to an A. My conclusion was that a C nothing special for a true Bass, but I know that you lose a lot of vocal range with age and so I though that a C might still be very impressive at this age. When I watched the video I knew that was thinking about the wrong C...

    • @somerandomdragon558
      @somerandomdragon558 2 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      @@rustyjames1727 Death metal growls use false chords like mentioned above. One way to achive this is to start with kargyraa (mongolian throat singing) and basically put more pressure on it until it distorts to a roaring sound. If you are too lazy to practise kargyraa, you can also do it by starting with an either really annoyed and raspy sigh noise or sustained throat clearing. That might however not always lead to the desired result. Ken turner (in this video) is using subharmonics. There the vocal chords (not false chords) vibrate a perfect fifth apart. The interference of those different frequencies produces a note that is exactly one octave below the lower frequency. If the interval is not a perfect fifth but instead a perfect fourth, the frequency of the resulting note would be one octave and a perfect fifth below the lower frequency. That is also called the second subharmonic. The subharmonic series is theoretically infinite, but higher levels of subharmonics are generally extremely difficult to reach or sustain. That is the reason why 99% of all subharmonic notes are probably the first subharmonic.The highest level i have ever heard was the fourth subharmonic and the fifth subharmonic in kargyraa. And yes, death growls based on a second subharmonic kargyraa note should be possible too. But then they will probably stop sounding like roars and become actual growls/snarls.

    • @Honey_Beef
      @Honey_Beef 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      By the way, there are actually singers in the bass world who utilise actual growls in their singing in tune. If you're interested, search up some Tim Foust stuff (especially "Ring of Fire" and "I Want Crazy" from the Sing-Off), he uses this exact "growl" to sing in-tune, which has a different texture to the sound and is crazy in another way.

    I’m less impressed by how low he can sing (which is still very impressive), and more impressed at how well the low notes fit within the song. Especially at “every cloud” where the low note created a rumbling sound just like a thunderstorm which reflects the lyrics said right after. Chef’s kiss

      Really shows great teamwork. You need more than one for a job like this, and it shows they get along really well. The guy in the green seemed to have started directing at one point, just to make sure they all stayed focused.
      Absolutely amazing. Everyone knew what they were meant to do, and no one tried to hog the attention, which would have made it too low or too high. Guys on the left knew what to do, guys on the right came in at the right time, and both had solo moments to set the right mood.
      Just what you see with four classy _adults,_ following notes transcribed by _one_ person. Maybe it's weird for me to focus on the proper work and attention compared to amatuers, but if you walk into a classroom assignment, the most spoiled kid will try to lead the whole thing, and control roles he can't understand, like an average pianist trying to lead a superb guitarist, and vice versa -- unless if the guitarist is mentioning a place for the pianist to fill in, for sore fingers and the like, and if the pianist can do both, and then resist going on when the guitarist gets back in, or starts leading again, that's great. The same mistake can be done by adults, which means they get too involved, and not only bring down the quality, but also stop some growth.
      This is why none of the people watching would make a good team -- by excluding one or the other. But I'm just trying to rate it, and getting along with strangers is tiring. It usually happens, since most people are polite at first contact, but there are varying levels of maturity in groups of strangers, and that doesn't end well. Just look at Abba. They were a group of strangers who let hormones get in the way, because they didn't have much prior experience. Nowadays, only two of the guys are togheter, and that's because they knew each other from another band.
