PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN Tribute (1967-2014) - We Remember

  • None of our generation's character actors were quite as brilliant as Philip Seymour Hoffman. From his breakthrough in Jan de Bont's Twister as the comic relief Dusty to his work with Paul Thomas Anderson and beyond, he was the rare character actor that was so damn good he became a leading man. Tragically, he passed away in 2014, and it's hard to believe it's been eight years since this industry titan left us. As we get close to the anniversary of his death, we look back at some of his greatest roles in this episode of We Remember.
    Let us know in the comments what you think of this tribute and what your favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman performance is!

      Well said Shane! Think he was really struggling with money until scent of a woman. I did take him for granted & when he went, I was in shock because his talent is unreachable to others.

    Man it was phenomenal how he can be so fucking hilarious in Along came polly and so fucking scary in Mission impossible 3, and so sad in Truman capote. He was able to do every character

    Rest in peace, Philip Seymour Hoffman. The first movie I ever saw him in was "Scent of a Woman", and despite being a mere supporting character, he blew me away. He went on to more leading roles, and deservedly won the Oscar for his work as Truman Copote.

    Philip Seymour Hoffman was one of my favorite actors. I was shocked and saddened when I heard of his death. As a recovering heroin addict myself, it frightens me to think of dying alone like that. His death actually helped motivate me to get clean. This is a beautiful tribute to a very talented man. Thank you!

    • @jevinday
      @jevinday 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm also a recovering heroin addict, I was clean when he died, and as my favorite actor it fucking broke my heart. He was the first person I truly mourned for that I never met. I am clean now too, but I struggled for a good 4 years after he died with heroin. I'm grateful that I don't have to worry about dying with a needle in my arm anymore. He deserved better than that. But as we know addiction doesn't discriminate

    I don't think we were ever meant to have Philip longer than we did. I can understand how, towards the end of his life, he said acting was emotionally exhausting. He put everything he had into every role and I think it took its toll. I don't know how you could keep that level of intensity for decades. Thank you for this beautiful tribute -- it couldn't be more perfect! I'm sure I'll watch it many more times when I want to remember this brilliant human being.

  • @jevinday
    @jevinday 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    He was the greatest of all time in my opinion. Doubt is such a trip, it has 0 curse words, never says the word "rape" or "abuse", but is one of the most tense, morally ambiguous films I've ever seen. It's never even stated exactly what Streep's character thinks he did, but it is so heavily implied that you know EXACTLY what is going on and what everyone means. It is truly such a unique film, especially because a lot of the films I watch are really vulgar and violent. I also realized that I look almost identical to Phillip in Twister, I'm about the same age too (I'm 29). RIP Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He was the first celebrity I ever mourned over.

    At the time the Capote film came out, there was ANOTHER biopic of Capote starring an actor who both looked and sounded a lot more like Capote. In fact. Hoffman neither looked nor sounded like him. But what can I say - he wiped the floor with that other actor, and NO ONE remembers that movie now! This was a metamorphosis and got into the soul of the tortured writer so deeply that you DID begin to see and hear him as Capote. This was one of the spookiest things I've ever seen. But what breaks my heart is how none of this acclaim seems to bring people happiness. Having some of the best roles that existed in Hollywood, winning every award and even having a family who loved him - he still had a broken heart at such a profound level that addiction broke him in the end. But that is exactly why he could play those complex, wounded characters to such perfection.

    One of my all time favorites, may he rest in peace. I knew from the range of Twister and Big Lebowski that he was talented and going somewhere and then he took over Hollywood in the 2000s. Owning mahoney is such a good hidden gem, really good look into the dark side of gambling addiction in excruciating detail. Pirate Radio is another just absolute blast of a movie thats always approved by the wife as well.

    I rarely get strong negative emotional reactions to celebrities deaths. I understand it's sad. But I don't know these people so I typically don't get personally affected. When he died I actually cried. Paul thomas Anderson is my favorite director and Hoffman my favorite actor of his generation. I related to him so much. I related to the feeling you must suffer for your art. I related to his depression and to addictions. Idk I miss him. At least he is in the endless black nothing that is death.
