  • If your left hand is well set up and prety comfortable, then you're probably ready to play faster. That's what we violinists desire, right? The thing is, listening with enormous concentration is actually the secret of making fast playing really accurate and sounding fresh and alive. Let's explore it together...Mary

      I watch quite a few cello videos. It's fascinating watching the mechanics of cello bowing with its different relation to gravity...Mary❤

      Oh Craig, I'm so delighted and thankful that you're picking up your violin again! There's nothing like opening your case and saying hello again to your violin that's been longing to be picked up and played!
      And a fresh start with some new ideas is a great thing after a break...enjoy it! Take care. Mary❤

    Hola Mary! Mil gracias!

      Hello Lola! I'm very glad you are making progress with accuracy bit by bit...it's encouraging - and exciting!
      There's nothing like getting back to our violins and that wonderful feeling of music...And I just love your beautiful description of music 'floating.'
      You know, my violin has really changed things since it was repaired. The sound is a bit bigger and it's offering me many new sensations and ideas to try out. How does an old violin keep on getting better? It's quite amazing and I'm very lucky to have this wonderful companion!
      I hope you're really enjoying your practice Lola. Take care! Mary❤

    How do you learn each piece , do I have to learn to read sheet music or or by ear

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv

      Hello, thanks for your question.
      Well, the sheet music contains markings by the composer, and these are very exact, like slurs for phrasing a certain way, dynamics, on or off the string...a whole set of markings that make an enormous difference to how you play the piece. But playing by ear is a great skill if you can pick up music by listening! It's just that the other player may not be playing accurately what the composer wrote.
      Even if you cannot yet read music, if you have an idea of how a piece goes, you can follow the shape of the music and see what markings are there.
      Markings in music are easily learned, like p (play softly) f (play more loudly) crescendo and diminuendo (gradually get louder or softer) pizzicato, slurs (grouping notes together) spiccato (off the string) accents etc etc
      Suggested bowings and fingerings are usually in the score as well, which are incredibly helpful.
      I learn a piece using the music and as I go along I've memorised it. That's just years of doing it.
      Mary❤

    Hello Mary, I love your videos so much. I struggle to play fast and musically? I seem to lose the music of a piece when I quicken up. I also struggle with string crossing when playing fast. I've been learning Drowsy Maggie and just can't get the right sound when crossing those strings. Any advice? I feel like my arm is wagging around when I cross strings? Also I find it really hard to do tiny bows...is that normal?

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv

      Hello there! It sounds as though you're becoming rigid when you speed up. Your bow hold and wrist are probably tight and you need to have a loose wrist and forearm to play Drowsy Maggie.
      When you cross strings back and forth you don't use the whole arm but just the forearm in circular motions,
      Finding it hard to do tiny bows tells me your elbow is likely locking up...What's it like when you play slowly? Are you still stiff? If you are, it's just getting magnified when you go faster...
      So what can you do? Well, fast playing is built on a foundation of slow playing. Examine every part of your bow arm from shoulder to the tips of your fingers and don't be afraid to identify everywhere you're tight. Awareness is half the battle, believe me.The sooner you identify what's actually going on with great awareness the sooner you can work on loosening those parts. And then work up your speed very gradually...Let me know how you get on and I'll try to help if I can. Take care! Mary❤

      Thank you so much, yes tension is an ongoing battle as I carry a lot of tension in my shoulders anyway. But I'm really going to examine those string crossings as you say, and make sure I'm using forearm and try to find the tension. I try too hard on the violin, I know I do because when I watch others it looks so simple. My school report would say...tries too hard! Argh!

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv

      @@PIckledeggilkley Good for you! Yes, do everything you can to get to the bottom of all the tension. I know it's difficult to release tension when it's become a habit, but being aware of it is a real help...
      Do you ever play extremely lightly so you're hardly making any sound with the bow and you're hardly putting your left hand fingers down? Try it and see; it's a really effective way to lighten up and release yourself to to go through the motions of playing without actually playing.
      Take care. Mary❤

    • @violinstudiowithmaryv

      Hello Katie!
      Don't worry, it's a question of saving bow. Have you tried the exercise where you play a note and make it last for the longest time possible with an extremely slow bow?
      It's an essential thing to do. At first the bow is crazily full of bumps, jumps, gaps and hesitations as the bow arm learns to relax itself throughout the whole bow. After a week of that you'll either be crazy or be able to fit in an incredible number of notes! Mary❤
