I headed 900 feet underground in an abandoned mine to set up a living room and a desk to record the audiobook version of my book "Ghost Town Living" - out March 19th.
It was a huge adventure preparing for this reading. I ran power and Internet 900 feet underground, then brought down everything that I'd need to live there a few days while recording.
I hope you'll take a moment to check out my book, Ghost Town Living, available March 19th everywhere books are sold: www.penguinran...
I put my put my heart and soul into this thing and really dug deep on making sense of these past 3+ years living up here. The book has all sorts of new stories, insights, and history of the town. I think it’s the best content I’ve ever made.

Email your receipt to book@cerrogordomines.com for some special pre-order bonuses!
That is so cool Brent I'm going to try to get your book into my Library in Cheyenne Wyoming ❤
The address to send my receipt didn't work and got bounced back. :(
You could use a fish tank or some sort of aquarium for extra inspiration and entertainment
Brent bro ... thats awsome... u shud put a t.v and a playstation dow. There and play mine craft 😅
Hey @ghosttown2 I tried emailing the address at the end of the video but the email bounced. just in case more are having this issue
Brent - electrician here, wanted to state that I’m a little concerned for your safety with the use of romex electrical cable you ran to the lower level of 900’ below the surface. Romex is only permitted to be installed inside residential walls where it’s not subject to physical damage by being able to hit it with objects. Also, you want to avoid contact with moisture within the cable, which can be hazardous because some of the internal characteristics in various types of cable may contain paper that can hold and absorb water. If you want to be safe, use some type of armored cable or install wire inside metal conduit and properly size your wire. Lastly, if you are using 120v at 1000’ from your electrical panel, the voltage will be considerably low, elevating the amps/load on the circuit. This will cause your equipment and wiring to burn up and overheat. Maybe you used the correct size wire of 1/0 or #1AWG depending on where your electrical panel is located, but visually it looks like you used #12AWG or 10AWG. You need to severely up size your wire in order to safely go that distance, but they don’t make romex that size. While nothing has happened yet, thankfully 🙏, the wire will break/arc/and spark at the weakest section of the wire that takes the highest level of amps. Using LED lights that are low energy and might not cause failure, but if you plug higher power consuming devices that can be the trigger. I don’t want to see you get hurt or cause a fire. I do service large mining operations in Southern CA so I know a few thing’s 😉
Be safe bud
i think he needs to hire you dude
You should consider emailing brent with this information! He always plugs his email for various reasons, but this sounds like a safety concern Brent should definitely see and attempt to fix. If you're doing services in South CA mining, I'm sure he would want to speak with you
Brian Johnson decribed the issue very well. It's like having an extention cord which is way too long. Dangerous.
Brent will want cooking ability, and heat. Thats lots of amps , which means wiring expenses.
But perhaps the mine gets enough natural ventilation to carry away fumes from a propane cook stove.
Or from a propane or diesel heater.
If so, electric demand will go down
A LOT.
Another possibility.
If this is not lived in beyond say 3 days at a time, consider a portable lithium battery. Say a 2kw electric bike battery. It could power LED lights, a fridge, a computer or small HDTV.
MSHA?
Plus, add the factor of 1.21 Giggawatts to the flux capacitor and then the addition of the amritionics adjudication and BLAM....there goes the darificious nodolueoptimic system. Oh boise, that's not good for the soymetomitrics.
Drinking coffe out of a cut off water bottle Brent? you can borrow my Amercan Hotel mug if you promise to give it back LOL
Deal! I knew I had forgot something when I went down there...
It's call survival lol
Hot old plastic drinks make the crunchy dust taste better 😂
Love You Man As an old man in the 4th quarter of his life God Bless You little brother. Live the life while you can.
Thank you. I really appreciate that. I'm doing my best to live it up!
What a great mid-Tuesday surprise!! Yes!
Thanks Scott!
Something i would like is have a fake window (with curtains and stuff) that changes the light over the day to have daylight, dusk, sunset, night sunrise. For one thing it would be a humor thing but it might also give a way to keep a normal day/night cycle staying under ground for days. Could also be a video / live feed thing, but it doesn't have to be.
That is a cool idea. I like that.
You could create a living room close to the mine elevator. With the usual
Boom Sticks from ACME.
Insulate it if need be. Make it nice.
Some sheet rock, insulation and 2&2 lumber would do nicely.
Radon detector is probably a good idea.
Lol what are you going to do, put a radon mitigation system 1000 feet below ground in a mine? 😂

Have been watching you since beginning. Highs and lows. Brave soul. Lorraine from Philipsburg,Montana. We are a mining town so I appreciate your work.
I've also watched from the beginning. I truly enjoy this series. I lived in CA for many years, but old age & family now have me elsewhere. I never miss a video, though - Brent's a great storyteller, adventurer, and collaborator.
P-Burg! I love your candy store. Was just there two summers ago. I have got family from Anaconda that worked the stack.
it would be neat if you set up some lights (LEDS that can change shades) down the tunnels from where you stay on timers to mimic day and night cycle and keep your circadian rhythm in sync with the surface! I hope to visit one day, keep up the great content its amazing to see your dedication to cerro gordo.
Bathroom and shower sure would be top priorities for me if i was thinking about a tunnel home😉
i still remember when i first found out about you when the two ghost guys came over and i've loved your content ever since i love how much you've grown your channel. keep it going man
Thanks Brent, you are an inspiration to me and so many others! Doing what you want to do even with huge challenges, you Da MAN!! Looking forward to your book release, planning on buying several for a very unique gift!! So many love you and support you, you are NEVER alone my friend!
You never disappoint. You work SO HARD, and the hard-won results are obvious!
Kudos to your Hoist Man for his K-Mart announcement--humor is NEVER out of place, when you are en route to the 900 Level. He missed his chance at 'CLEAN-UP in Aisle 900', though! Lolol
New nickname for Mr. Underwood: 'BURROW'--call-back to Schmidt! :D
I have pre-ordered the book and look forward to reading it. Your journey has been amazing from the very start, long may it continue. Take care, be safe. Dorset, UK
Brent!!!! I'm so excited about your book which I ordered last year, but now I'm probably going to need the audio book too because I can't miss out on extra content!
Thank you for living such a great adventure and taking us along with you!!!!
definately keep the rails as a feature of the floor for the level 900 room! Either covering the rail section with glass or resin, and building a wooden floor around it. I personally would stick with warm earthy tones for the decor, browns reds oranges, to contrast the cool grey of the stone walls and ceiling, and have warm yellow lights to make it cozy. "rustic midwestern decor" is the general vibe I'm picturing - animal skin rug, leather chairs, old fashioned cast iron hanging candelabra.
Here's an idea for your "Suite": See if there a "sun tunnel skylight" that can collect sunlight at the "surface" and transmit it 900' down via fiber optic cable(s). If so, install a couple!
As I've commented elsewhere with you about the book, I just want to say I'm enjoying it so much and almost done! I've never read a book so fast (for me), but thorough all the while. Got it (pre-ordered) the first day Amazon sent them out, what, two days ago. I am just glad I got it. I have to say, this must be the first book I've ever pre-ordered, ordered on-line, and purchased in years! Thanks Brent! I commend you for not only writing about Cerro Gordo, but for what and how you've handled the choices, and lived in the last four years. You deserve nothing less than your dreams coming true for your Ghost Town.
I would like to suggest that you turn the room into a common room. Therefore, you could put sleeping rooms in tunnels. This would eventually allow for multiple guests to stay down in the 900 at one time and then gather in the common room.
I'd get the air tested before sleeping down there.
How much fun was that camping out in the mine and recording. 22:15 The 3D pictures when introduced to different light will produce prisms like none found before. The colours are very pronounced when light hits the Walls. Audio book done Brent smiles and shows his delight. Relaxed and ready for a different project. What an imaginative way to live life. Thanks for sharing. Later! 😅
Pre-ordered the book...nothing like reading and flipping through physical pages! I cannot wait until my 10yr old daughter (who also loves watching you) and I can visit Cerro Gordo! Your drive to escape the world and your appreciation for history warms my heart! Kindred spirit no doubt. Thank you!
I pre-ordered the book! Will enjoy the audiobook as well, especially while on the road.
Amazing! Thank you so much
I just finished your book a couple of days ago. The book was great. The stories were very entertaining and the way it was written made it very easily read. I so appreciate your videos and now your book. I'm disabled so that I couldn't even go to a place like Cerro Gordo, but your videos and your book bring it to life for me so that I can enjoy all of your adventures right along with you. Thank you so much for sharing your adventures with those of us who cannot do them ourselves.
Foot pump or gravity sink. Mirror. Lighting, flooring, painting, sound system, recliner, water feature, low light/subterrainian garden
you should build a chair that engages those mine cart tracks, so you can swing around in style.
I've been watching this channel going on 3 years now and I have yet to see that they finish any project. Yet they start more and more projects and create this hype of how it's going to be when they "fibish", yet I never see anything finished. Please focus and finish something, my recommendation would be finish the freaking hotel. I'll chek in in six months and see if anything has been finished. Good luck!
Living a dream. Don't forget to brush your teeth at night.😊❤🎈🧨🏆🎆📸🎯 Good luck on your audio book. Wishing you the very best.
I brought my toothbrush! Thank you!!
@@ghosttown2You have beautiful teeth!
Blessings, Brett, from an old lady, a fellow SoCal native, in eastern Ventura County.
Love the suite!!
That's what i loved about old audiobooks you can always hear the page turn!
Brent: You sure know where to go for peace and quiet." Mind blowing".
You have your very own Man cave.
Thanks for another awesome video. Regards South Africa 🇿🇦.
This is the kind of situation where you go down thinking you are good to go and realize you forgot ONE critical thing. lmao
Glad to see you back down there, but make sure you have an exit plan and ropes etc to get out another way if needed.
The 900ft Bungalow Suite 🥂... Awesome job man.. absolutely amazing
What a fantastic achievement! Can't wait to see how the space develops. Would love to see some designers/architects collaborating with the build, so I hope there are some creatives out there who want to take up the challenge and contribute to this unique project. I have visited Derinkuyu in Turkey - the famous underground city 250 feet down with 18 levels. It was once home to 20,000 people! A wonderous experience so there are some inspirational spaces out there. Loved your idea of a bowling alley. I'd like to add an old skool video/pinball arcade!
Brent i love your videos they help me get through hard times thank you for showing me i feel like im there with you
The book of coming out on my birthday! Birthday gift to my self
YAY!!! I just received my Hardcover Book. So excited to read and get the privilege of diving deeper into the Cerro Gordo Adventures. Best wishes for a smashing Bestseller Book & Author!!!🏆🍷🎆
I'm calling it now! Cerro gordo starts booming, Brent starts to hate the mass of idiots and moves into his multi bed multi layer mine headquarters to get away.
Brent is a nice guy😊😊
Lime rendering the walls and roof in the living space is something that'd make it nice.
Thank YOU for bringing us along❣️❣️❣️❣️
Of course!
Your voice is unique and goes well in telling the history of Cerro Gordo and its future.
Can you imagine how many people went through that space.
That’s a monumental work. All manual and dynamite.
Recording your own books is very hard! I am so proud of you! Next time you do it! Keep a salt shaker handy! It will help with your throat!
Right on, I’d love to be there.
Great Following Your Progress in all Your Endeavors Brent and Be Safe Alway's because You Bring Entertainment and History to Many People. Brent Your Future Starts Anew Every day And It Looks Awesome...Enjoy All Of It! From Your Fans In Alaska:)
Brent look forward to buy your book. Maybe if recording in the future, the sound of flipping pages and the sound of a crackling fire would be cool. Like an old fashion radio show.
Brent you are an inspiration to so many. I wish you great success with your book sales. I can’t wait for my copy to arrive. Be safe and happy exploring my friend.
I’m so glad you’ve decided on making living space underground. From an exploration perspective, every expedition has base camps to move between so you have a nearby starting out point.
I think if you have the height, one of those desk/bunk bed combos might be space efficient in a taller place, and definitely your living/dining/cooking space at the lift. If you can get the water started then you can probably get some good pressure if you put a tap in that’s fed by the source above you
How exited !!!! I can’t wait to listen to your audio book ! It’s going to be such a privilege!!!!! 😜😜😜
Hello Brent! Your eyes always look huge when you're underground. 😳👍😁
It's dark down there!
Like a kitty in the dark!!! ❤🐱
It would be cool to hang an old chandelier in the new mine suite to illuminate it. And maybe an area rug or a roll of astro turf for the floor.
I think it would be cool to use the track and build cabinets and a small roll away kitchen, maybe a closet, and use the tracks that way. I used to work underground at midas mine nevada, this was a very good video
Wild that 900 ft. underground in Death Valley has better internet than the state of Missouri.
@12:51 every room you build will need an airfilter. also at this time of the year, i imagine most of the cold air is coming from the jefferson chimminey. if you build "airlock" blankets stapeled or nailed to beams along the hallways around your room it will increase the temperature. though may prevent resh air flow. without some "vents" along the walls and cieling of the blankets.
Thank you for a neat surprise on a rather down day for me. Just listening to you talk and hearing the joy of discovery and honest enthusiasm that you have for the town and the mine gives a happy lift to my day. :)
You are so welcome! That's very nice to hear.
brent as always you amaze...some comfy chairs that roll on the track perhaps...as the miners are gone maybe some rolly chairs to offer them a seat for their hard work in spirit land.
I highly recommend that if you're going to camp out at the 900 foot level for days at a time that you better get somebody who understands how mines work and come up with serval ways to get out of there in the event of a fire, explosion, flood, collapse and whatever else can happen in a mine. As you mentioned during the video they had a fire in the building above the mine that was a concern but all sorts of awful things could happen down at that 900 foot level and you need multiple ways to get out of there. Your life depends on it.
I've ordered the Audio book! SO EXCITED!!!
Love your videos. Can't wait for my book to arrive. Ordered it last Nov.
Keep tracks in the area I feel pouring resin for floor over the track and the dirt under so it stays clean for a cool suite 😊
Im so excited to get my edition of your book. 🎉
Thank you, Brent, for writing this book. I am 71 yrs old and would never be able go explore Cerro Gordo unless I won the Lottery...LOL 😅
amazing! Thank you. Hope somehow it works out to visit one day! If not, I'll keep making the videos
@@ghosttown2Brent, just so you know I have watched your videos since day one. You were such a city slicker four years ago when you had to walk in your loafers, in the snow, just to get to the town. But you are officially a Desert Rat now. Again thank you.
Always great, but this is special. Love your sense of adventure and learning. Yes, envy!
Another great video. I got your book on Kindle. Absolutely loved your book. Very well written. Hugs
That would be an AWESOME airbnb!
hey brent. i always look forward to you videos. hope to one day make my way there
I hope so too!
the most authentic definition of RUSTIC!! very cool. congrats on the book.
It would be cool to make a rolling island out of the tracks down at the 900 foot level. It goes thru the kitchen and living room and bedroom. Moving dinner table. Buffet. Or entertainment center?
Also cut shelves into the rock before you do floor. Use excess rock to make a heat sink to hold heat in. Maybe burn alcohol fireplace, no C02 just water vapor. You can make a stainless steal box and fill it with course steel wool with a lid that slides closed to put it out. You could make it long and skinny, but deep so it would burn a while? Set it in an alcove with rock all around it. To make Heat sink. 😊❤
That's a cool idea! I like that.
I wish you much success with your book! Nice little "Man CAVE" you have made down there. (pun intended, lol)
I preorder audiobook and the regular book thank you for all your amazing content and videos love to watch them all sometimes I watch them over again thank you for all your hard work keep it up
Pre-Ordered it on audible the other day! Can't wait to listen to it Brent!
With the mine being big and open you should build a loft out of recycled wood !! That would be so bad ass
I believe reading your book 900' underground is a Guinness Book of World Records new category!
If this dude seriously lives 900ft down in a cave I expect him to find the meaning of life or discover some long lost ancient god.
In life going deep is where you discover secrets things 😊😊😊
I'm so excited for the audio book! I just pre-ordered mine. 😀
Brent, you have an amazing story to tell, a true story teller if I ever saw one.
Thank you.
Brian from Canada, I am going to meet you one day for sure.
Thanks Brian! See you up here sometime.
I hear you. Just pre-ordered and definitely looking forward to reading your book. Thanks for putting in so much time and effort into this. Peace from the east.
I saw your crazy wild eyes in the thumbnail and knew instantly you'd been living underground 🤣
😊😊
Unique 900 foot book recording. Great idea
I have books on preorder. Couple as gifts to share the Cerro gordo history.
Such a unique experience Brent. I love all your witty ideas. My idea is to put an R.C. Car track down there 😄. Cheers. I look forward to reading your book. 🥂 📖
A surprise video! Woohoo!
Been watching your channel for some time now. It is great learning about the history of Cerro Gordo and yourself. Like how you get SME's (subject matter experts) for the various project you embark on. Have you considered collaborating with the USGS to place seismic instruments in the mine? This would be a nice long term experiment to research to determine whether there will be any indicators before a collapse occurs. Long term because I hope there will be no collapses. Keep putting out great content. Thanks for sharing.
Big screen TV and couches maybe a popcorn machine for 900ft level horror movies for Halloween
Very exciting! I can't wait to get my copy!
Just bought the book and the audiobook - can't wait :)
Thank you so much! That's awesome
One thing i would love to see lore of just like the old cideo of 48 hours or 24 hours in the mines exploring and fixing down at the bottom would be so awesome to see.
Reminds me of the last video that you've done about the ninth level. Thank you for sharing! 👍
Preordered your new Audio Book on Audible! Can't wait! ... it all started with an idea and the passion to find an old pair of Levi's. Well Done, Brent!!
Just got my pre-order done! I can't wait to listen, too far away though lol. Love the channel and could only dream of coming up to visit one day, really hope to, much luck, can't wait
I CANNOT wait to read this book Brent! I pre-ordered as soon as you sent your first email about it.
0:28 ... BUT??? What a FANTASTIC way to motivate yourself!! (to accomplish the goal STRAIGHT THRU in jus 2 days!!
... and no distractions !!! and it's a awesome stunt tooo!! :)
Disc golf basket and some disc golf putters
I do love golf...
You have all the mod cons for an apartment in a mine, but no toilet, not even a camping toilet.
I just pre-ordered your book and I am excited to read it! Thank you for sharing this adventure with all of us!!
You may want to consider building a bathroom of sorts. At least a toilet if people are going to be staying down there like a hotel. There are compost toilets that don't need plumbing that you could bring down there. You could use the water down there make a sink/faucet or maybe even a shower/bath tub
Hi Brent! I'd like to see you make a living room/man cave. Big screen TV, couple of recliners, sofa, maybe a coffee table.
Can’t Waite for the book
Love this videos, big dog. Love to bond with my pops over all your amazing videos.
Feel ya on the speaking, I had to do speech therapy growing up...I still have issues with certain words, but I have embraced my new lingo.
Brent you are doing a fine job I can't wait to get your book and my be I can come out there someday it's a long drive from west Virginia 😊
I've pre ordered and I'm really looking forward to your book Brent :)
Amazing! Thank you so much
My birthday is March 14th. This book will be a good present to myself!!!
My birthday also, but no book, chemo infusion instead .
nice video thanks again for share your life an Cerro Gordo and your adventure in to the mine
