Removing VW Vanagon Waterboxer Transmission

A quick how-to for removing the transmission in my VW Vanagon Westfalia.
This is in my Subaru swapped westy that I have the 4 speed waterboxer transmission in.
Super simple and easy to do, just takes time.
I unfortunately had to do this job because my transmission got stuck in third gear one day while I was driving so I had to get towed back to my driveway.

Thanks for the video! I had a vanagon same color that I stupidly sold. Now have a dark brown /tan. Trying to get the transmission down to tighten flywheel. (Subie swapped making a hell of a racket). That slave cylinder is the big oversight that you have shown me! Super appreciate it!!

Another tip… Porsche 944 axels are a great upgrade and shaft circumference is larger, very heavy duty!

Your 81 Westy and my 83 Westy are the same color with the same rear dent to the hatch. Haha
I see you have a Subaru conversion. I did that to my 85 tintop along with a Subaru 5 speed. If you have another transmission drop out scenario, I highly recommend a Subaru Gears kit. Huge difference in driveability.

bro how do you go about greasing the rebuilt transmission before install and what’s a good rule of thumb?

I just throw a little grease on the shaft and fill it up with gear oil and its good to go!
