I had a JX-08 for a little over a year, and honestly it sounds really great for what it is! With independent effects on both voices and the ability for each channel to be independently controlled by midi, you have a pretty powerful two voice module for a small hardware set-up. That being said, I found myself using the classic patches more than anything else and eventually sold it and bought a real JX-8P and love that even more 🙂.
I’m just gonna say it: this sounds pretty good and it’s the best “Roland 80s DCO synth recreation” in the boutique line. Now I just hope everyone disagrees and the prices plummet so I can get one for dirt cheap.

Wow, that was suprisingly... bassy! After all the bashing JX-08 got after the release (which OFC most came from comparing it to JX-8P) looks like you're one of the few to stand up for it, Florian. Great episode!
Right on! These are going for 350 in the US now, which seems eminently reasonable. I care less that it doesn't sound like JX-8P and more that it has a lot to recommend it in its own right. I may pick one up here before too long.
A note regarding the noisy USB. If you are in the UK, use an official Apple iPhone or iPad charger to power it. They have a proper Earth connection which sorts out the USB noise (not sure if this applies to other country’s Apple chargers). This works on all the Boutiques. Obviously no good if you are connecting to a PC but useful if you are using them as a standalone synth.
I quite like this one for quick fun. I usually set up something repetitive on one part and then go a little crazy with the other part. It find it very performative all by itself. The bass sounds in your tracks hit really nicely.
Fantastic verdict. I feel most of the complaints come from it's comparison to the original. If you look at the JX-08 as something different completely you have maybe one of the best portable polysynths on the market imo.
I was watching this with bated breath because this was my most recent synth purchase. I had three reasons for deciding on this one. Ranging from least to most petty, the combination of surface controls, two voices with independant sequencing, lots of polyphony, and internal effects combined with an overall sound I liked was the first consideration. My music buddy -- I don't play conventional keyboards with comfort and this is an ongoing issue but he does, he had piano lessons as a kid --- once groaned out in response to a Depeche Mode song, "I love the eighties." And he's the one who'll be making the most use out of this. And finally, our studio keyboard/synth is a Korg Poly-800. I wanted something that would sit on that stupid menu panel it has on the right-hand side that had ACTUAL CONTROLS. I swear, it gave me hives for decades. So with that in mind, it was gratifying to hear you say nice things about the unit. I wish it had seperate controls for both envelopes and more waveforms but honestly, I like it a lot.

(as perfectly demonstated in your jams!) Personally I dont care if it sounds exactly like a JX-8P. For my taste, it delivers this authentic 80s punch and thanks to several very good creamy choruses (chorae ??? :-) and a nice filter it's a great choice for every synthwave production. Luckily the polyphony of 20 voices and 1cm longer faders make it way more usable than other boutiques.

Haha another great addition and video. Top work outs as always. I do like how you always use an old yellow key midi controller to do these tracks, nuff respect ✊
As cool as Roland makes their stuff look, Bad Gear channel removed the curtain once again so that we can see what's up. This may not be bad, but it would be bad for my wallet. Thank you once again sir for saving me repackaging fees on return shipment.
apparently Rolands business model involves not making as much money as they could. if they didnt want to "chase ghosts" they wouldnt manufacture digital clones of analog synths.
@@AudioPilz I wish both behringer and roland would stop with the clone thing, and just try to develop really interesting instruments with innovative features, technology, and good sounds... its possible to take a cheap mixer, and feed it back into itself to turn it into a sort of 'oscillator'... maybe someone could design a synth based on that concept...
I'm swayed. At first I was like "why did Roland leave out some key features of the Jx-8p?" and then I went and played my JX-3p and heard those ever slow digital envelopes. Well said here, this machine definitely wouldn't get as much hate if it wasn't marketed as an 8P.
If you recall I am a proud owner of a Roland JX-8P (bought in later half of the 1980s) and Roland MKS-70 (essentially a Super JX in a rack mounted version) and the titular Roland Boutique JX08. I have always had an affinity for the interface of these instruments (even though I never owned a PG800). It's fair to say that the JX08 is not the same as a JX-8P but I am in my comfort zone programming these things and with all of the sliders etc it's even easier to get where I want to than on the 8P (programming on the MKS-70 is kind of a hassle so I don't do it. Rather I transfer sounds I make on the 8P to the MKS via carts) I love my 08 and am happy to have it in my collection.
As usual Florian hits the nail on the head. This Boutique module really doesn’t capture much of the sound or the vibe of its namesake, but it sounds really good as its own thing. I could deal with the panel omissions but trying to simultaneously tweak the amp and filter envelopes from a single set of ADSR sliders is something I will not entertain. I’m considering selling my AX60 for this very reason.
I am an happy owner of the boutique Jupiter 8.. and fortunately I have little hands😀 It you record Roland boutique thru a tube preamp you get more warmth that will sound more close to the original.

You nailed the conclusion - it's a good sounding little synth which doesn't do what it says on the tin.
Thank you!
As cool as Roland makes their stuff look, Bad Gear channel removed the curtain once again so that we can see what's up. This may not be bad, but it would be bad for my wallet. Thank you once again sir for saving me repackaging fees on return shipment.
Always a pleasure!!! Thank you!
You made that thing sound ridiculously cool!
Thank you!!!
apparently Rolands business model involves not making as much money as they could. if they didnt want to "chase ghosts" they wouldnt manufacture digital clones of analog synths.
There's some truth to that!
@@AudioPilz I wish both behringer and roland would stop with the clone thing, and just try to develop really interesting instruments with innovative features, technology, and good sounds... its possible to take a cheap mixer, and feed it back into itself to turn it into a sort of 'oscillator'... maybe someone could design a synth based on that concept...
your composition skills are unbelievable 🤩
Thank you so much!!!
Finale is perfect as always !
Thank you!!!
I'm swayed. At first I was like "why did Roland leave out some key features of the Jx-8p?" and then I went and played my JX-3p and heard those ever slow digital envelopes. Well said here, this machine definitely wouldn't get as much hate if it wasn't marketed as an 8P.
Word!!!
Love my JX-08. It's great for gigging.
👍👍👍
Thank you so much for the review. I liked the sound and the price so I will get one. Thanks for your great program!😊
You have a nice collection, sir!!!
I'm sold. Good work!
Thank you!!!
I will never understand minijacks for a "pro" level synth. Gut Job!
Vielen Dank!
Despite being another expensive Roland boutique, i must recon it sounds damn great ! Waiting for the Aira compact version 😂
Lol
As usual Florian hits the nail on the head. This Boutique module really doesn’t capture much of the sound or the vibe of its namesake, but it sounds really good as its own thing. I could deal with the panel omissions but trying to simultaneously tweak the amp and filter envelopes from a single set of ADSR sliders is something I will not entertain. I’m considering selling my AX60 for this very reason.
Thanks!!! I really want an AX60 for the show though...
@@AudioPilz good choice. I have a severe love/hate relationship with the thing.
Holding out for my _Boutique V-Synth!_
I'd like to try the original;)
Cool video and not sure the referring to Kraft on just that video is happy happy joy joy!
Big fan of Espen. He really knows his stuff!
this synth sounds so nice and soft ..
True that!
Special Review Request: The back breaking 7 kg monster from 2001 - the Yamaha RS7000
Great idea, thanks!
Have to say I really like the way this sounds. Maybe not a perfect JX emulation but feels a bit like a best of Juno/JX hybrid monster!
Same here!!!
The extra ‘O’s in "world” had me rewind to make sure I heard it right o_O
Oh;)
I had one for a bit. Sounded really good. Found that I just didn’t really need it with what I already owned
I can relate to that!
Wow, those were some great sounding jams. Almost made me get out my credit card.
Thank you!!!
looking at my JX8P while watching this!
😻😻😻
I'm glad I went for the JD-08 instead. VERY glad!
I like that one quite a bit!!!
I am an happy owner of the boutique Jupiter 8..
and fortunately I have little hands😀
It you record Roland boutique thru a tube preamp you get more warmth that will sound more close to the original.
Nice technique!!! Thanks for posting!
Possibly my favorite version of the intro tune. 🤔 I would totally buy this synth if it had a built in Japanese bidet.
I'd buy that for a dollar too!!!
A must have boutique
👍
Still not ashamed to have a Roland Cloud subscription. I'm fully aware what nonsense I have to deal with there =D
There are great sounds on there!
@@AudioPilz And to their credit: they know how to update their software 😁
Great video !!!! I was thinking in getting one of these.
Thank you!!!
4:37 love this bit
Great preset!!!
Looking forward to the 100k extravaganza.
So do I;) Thanks!
i have a Roland JX-10 Super JX keyboard synth -- and the PG-300 programmer module . both in excellent condition . any takers ?
