Shooting Portraits on Film & Digital [Mamiya RB67 & Canon 6D Mark II]

  • FINALLY got round to shooting a little bit of behind the scenes using medium format, taken on the Mamiya RB67! It was only one roll of film, so I included some BTS of the digital work too, shot on a Canon 6D Mark II. Hopefully I'll have some more film behind the scenes coming shortly!

    Thanks for the video.
    When I shoot portraits with my RB67, I usually do the following:
    1. To save time, I have my RB67 film backs already loaded with film before the portrait session.
    2. Not only do I use a digital camera for test shots, but I also use it as a light meter for my RB67.
    3. I love the 90mm f/3.8 for full-lengh portraits. However, I prefer the
    250mm f/4.5 for tight face shots and the 180mm f/4.5 for head & shoulder shots.
    4 I rarely shoot handheld RB67 portraits. I usually use a tripod or a monopod.

    Love the video! Any reason in particular you went with the prism finder over the waist level? I have a 645 which is lighter and turning it on its side is still cumbersome!

      @SophiaCarey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @SophiaCarey
      @SophiaCarey  ปีที่แล้ว

      Either judge the scene by eye if you’re comfortable with knowing your settings, or else you can use a light meter: an external light meter, an app on your phone or even using a DSLR or other camera with an internal light meter to read the scene and then transfer those settings. Let me know if that makes sense!

    great video, and Sophia, Don't stress about the camera issues, as with ALL film cameras, LF included, and esp. these 'system slr's ' every part that comes between the lens and film, has light seals, darkslides, and other places where light can leak in; and so everyone needs the first roll or two ( or two dozen sheets for 4x5" film) to iron out these quirks, and also get used to the camera, as for manual cameras, doing the wrong thing at the wrong time can be disasterous!, as a large Format photographer Mat Marrash says, you need to "learn the dance", not the foxtrot!!, but the daily routine of using the camera.

    Is there a need to wind the film back or do you just remove it after it’s finished shooting?

    • @SophiaCarey
      @SophiaCarey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just advance the film after you’ve taken your last shot! I like to wind the lever a few times just to be safe (because I opened the back once and it hadn’t wound properly). And then just open up the back and take it off of the spool. (Remember to move the spool back to the old position before you load your next roll.)

      @@SophiaCarey thank you so much! Also do you store it in a case after or is there no need for that?

    • @SophiaCarey
      @SophiaCarey  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@olisatasie-amadijr.9212 You secure the roll with a little tab, and then I just put it somewhere safe (like a small bag within my bag or something like that). I generally drop my film into the lab quite soon after shooting it, but if I don’t then I usually leave it in the bag/a case, just so I know where it is and stays protected really
