Das Boot film (not the series) is the best war movie I' ve ever seen . Without that anti-German patriotic paraphernalia or those invincible pseudo-heroes that show you in Hollywood. A master piece.

Even the film crew hated it and it got a lot of bad press when it came out for making the film not critical enough in comparison with the great book. It's mandatory to watch the series although it lacks the funny scene of the directors cut with the demonstration with the bowl on a how water bombs work :)
Ich war in 1988 als Besatzung des Versorger Offenburg in LaRochelle. Wir haben vor diesem Bunker an der Pier gelegen. Ich war von der Größe der Anlage beeindruckt. Und ich habe die freundlichen Menschen dort und die wunderschöne Landschaft (il de re) in Erinnerung behalten!
The original Das Boot was epic and an all time benchmark for submarine movie. I doubt a remake would surpass that. Nevertheless this 2 minute video brings goosebump for me.

You'd think that a yacht would itself be the means of maritime travel, but for a number of reasons they ride piggy-back on a purpose-built vessel like the one here in this clip when their owners want to explore a different part of the world. Also noteworthy is forward location of the bridge. There is a term for this type of ship design, but it escapes me at the moment.

For everyone who is interested in it. The film tells the story of U-96. It was a Type VII C U-boat and only one type of this boat still exists in the world. The U-995 and you can see it in Laboe Germany. What many people do not know , the board engineer of U-96 is still alive today. Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Grade and he is 107 years old.

J'ai été globalement déçu de la nouvelle série "Das Boot" (le retour) : tout le monde trahi tout le monde, les Allemands se battent entre eux, les principaux personnages meurent au fur et à mesure et, pour terminer, à la fin de la saison 1, l'officier de la Gestapo de La Rochelle va être muté comme commandant d'un camp d'extermination : ça ne promet rien de bon pour la saison 2...

"Das Boot 2" is actually a mini-series "Das Boot" (No further titel to tell them apart). Historically it is trash. It's a modern drama series with a second plot playing on land involving a love story and French fight against the GESTAPO and all that jazz. BTW they got something crucial wrong on the U-Boat model. Real sub crews went out of their way to lay as low in the water as possible without submerging the deck to make detection harder. This model rides at least a meter to high in the water. :P

@@andreasbracke1997 wenn ihr mit unserem Geschwader (7.SG, Kiel) da wart, dann war das eher 1989, da waren wir in Nantes, La Pallice (La Rochelle) und Santander. 1988 waren wir mit Hyäne und Wiesel in St. Nazaire und La Pallice und halt eben mit den 148ern vom 3.SG unterwegs. Dann waren wir noch in Cherbourg und Brest, da müsste ich aber erstmal irgendwie suchen in welchem der beiden Jahre das jeweils war. Und eine von den beiden Fahrten war die Offenburg dabei. Vieles vergisst man doch nach soviel Jahren leider. Übrigens war meine erste AAG als UA auf der Offenburg 1980 mit dem 7. SG nach Rouen und Gent. Ich war von April 1980 bis Dezember 1982 selbst auf der Offenburg.

There were several models of various scales used in the shooting -- one 6m model in a tank for underwater shots, one 11m model controlled by a man inside for most of the seagoing shots, and a full-size model for exterior shots. Plus of course the complete interior at Bavaria studios for all the interior shots.
The U-571's production has hired the services of two artistic directors, German Götz Weidner and the American William Ladd Skinner for an american submarine and a German submarine.. I know that Götz Weidner had worked on the Das Boot project, but the submarine replica U-571 was't the first Das Boot but certainly an another one somewhere between Cinecitta and Malta ( I think The Bay of St. Paul )... I didn't see that movie and never worked for it in one or other way, I only have worked and participate at assembling the first Daas Boot model. It was my job I was paid for it. I'm not a historian but a welder and I'm confused at not being able to answer you.. Regards H.K.
I only know that for U-571, a 1:1 Model of a Type VIIC was made. Witch was also used in the Spoof Movie "U-900" So i had the Image, that this one that was brought to La Rochelle, was the same one. The one, that was used in "Das Boot" sunk in a Storm during Production of the Movie. They raised it and repaired it cheap for the Final scene.
Yes, this is indeed the boat from U571, for u-571 they made 2 boats, the u-boot and an american s-boot, This is the american s boot, they cut the nose of the german u-boat and put it on the american so it would look like the american. You can see many holes on the hull, but they are not all right, hope they will change it to the right amount and positions, otherwise, this will not be historical correct, they still need to learn from the original das boot I guess

It can it do but only in the harbour. This boat isn't a real one and can't navigate at sea: this boat is only built to make a movie and that's the reason it doesn't have powerful engines, does't need it...

La Rochelle should be ashamed: they try everything to avoid visitors at the U-Boot-Bunker. No chance to visit, the whole area is off limits, not even a viewpoint. And they build new buildings around it, so that the last limited views are impossible. As long as as they behave like that, it's very strange that they celebrate something like Das Boot 2. Shame on them!
Them poor ppl that had to get into those diesel and sweat and other less flattering smells cramped ad did I metiond cramped terrible things. Todays subs are like a cruise except for some shouting officers and the wannabie officers..

La Rochelle should be ashamed: they try everything to avoid visitors at the U-Boot-Bunker. No chance to visit, the whole area is off limits, not even a viewpoint. And they build new buildings around it, so that the last limited views are impossible. As long as as they behave like that, it's very strange that they celebrate something like Das Boot 2. Shame on them!

Them poor ppl that had to get into those diesel and sweat and other less flattering smells cramped ad did I metiond cramped terrible things. Todays subs are like a cruise except for some shouting officers and the wannabie officers..
I was a mechanic on board one of these diesel submarines, and it was better than the aircraft carrier-type surface ships... :D
