Our first TEDxWestlake explored the accelerating change in the world around us. This change is largely driven by the power of the digital infrastructure built over the last few decades. William Gibson has remarked: "The future is already here -- it's just unevenly distributed." While we can't predict the future, we tried to uncover and mine some of these veins.
We were lucky to have speakers from a wide array of disciplines, from kinetic art to philosophy to hybrid social ventures, to come share their stories with our audience of business students and innovators, and help us wonder about what might lie ahead.
As a dual-degree Veterinary -- Business student at the University of Pennsylvania, Molly Dominguez is challenging the future role of the veterinary profession. In the United States, a veterinarian is traditionally perceived as a doctor for dogs, cats and horses. Yet, during Molly's six years as an officer on active duty in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, including a deployment in Iraq, she learned about the global leadership of veterinary medicine in promoting political, economic, and public health security. Drawing from these experiences, she captures the essence of why spreading the capabilities and expertise of the veterinary profession is critical for the United States' foreign policy over the next decade. Molly is a graduate of the United States Military Academy and received her Master's in International Relations from Oklahoma University. Her husband, Augie Dominguez, is currently deployed to Afghanistan with the 82nd Airborne Division.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
I’m veterinary medicine student with a lot of previous experience with animals and it’s very true and I’m not even to my PhD yet and this already relatable.

Vets r unsung heroes of society..........they serve animals directly and humans indirectly by primarily involved in production of wholesome/quality food from domestic animals like meat, milk, etc.vets play a pivotal role in combating real time challanges globally like antibiotic resistance, anthropozoonosis, zooanthroponosis, biowar management etc.

Agreed. For some people, yes. We must consider the differences between developed and undeveloped countries.
Be grateful that you live in a developed country and are rich enough to not eat or drink animal products. And I mean rich as in educated enough to find alternatives. Rich enough to live in an environment where you don't have to fight for every meal and be grateful for anything you can get. Be rich enough to have enough food to sustain you and not be malnourished. Your comment is so short sighted.
Increase the amount that each animal produces. Are animals here to SERVE us? NO, THEY ARE NOT. I am so disgusted by most veterinarians and how they support abimal abuse and suffering. Veterinarians are primarily here to protect and serve the needs of the public, not animals. Deeply disappointing.
Shut up, veganhead. If animals were abused they will be not capable to produce as much meat or milk, or eggs as they are producing in industrial stables right now. Yeah, they were born not to serve humans to start with. But they were born to make some meat for a carnivore or omnivore and reproduce. Their life goals are pretty much delighted
this is literally so disturbing! The video just talks about abusing the animals for our sake!
Wage working humans are treated the same way.
The reality is that there are many animals that do serve us and serve YOU daily as they have for thousands of years and they deserve medical attention as much as your beloved companion or mother does.
