  • This video shows a couple custom vinyl jobs that I did recently at our bike shop. Doing custom vinyl can be a cool way to give your bike a new look or cover up some imperfections and scratches. It isn't easy however, and does take some skill and a lot of patience. Leave a comment if you have any questions. Links below on some products if you need them (some links may be affiliate links). Or maybe would put out a detailed “how to” TH-cam vid; makes a huge difference! I’m a little worried- just got a matte black cannondale hybrid, and sounds like with a matte black finish, removal is dicey. . . But wow, it sure needs SOMETHING to help it out. Can you use a cricket to cut the vinyl? How do you measure to make sure you are cutting the exact dimensions of the logos?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, you can use a cricket to cut. I use a flexible tape measure like for clothes which can bend easy and measure the best I can on the bike. Sometimes you are right on, sometimes you have to cut another one because it isn’t exact. If you have a background vinyl that helps when covering logos. Sometimes though the logos are stretched in a certain way and can be a huge challenge to match up exact.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry for the delay. Stickers are tough since you really need a large digital printer to print the logo and maybe some design to be cut out. Using a plotter for a logo (depending on your logo) doesn’t usually hold up well (at least ours don’t). Not impossible, but for us at least, very time consuming!

    Any advice for doing this on trek Madone? Or should it be the same as any other bike

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, if it’s carbon that helps but if you are trying to get under curved areas, it doesn’t like to stretch too much so you will have seems in the vinyl. If it is a large area with lots of curves and bends, vinyl is challenging, you may be better off just getting it repainted.

    I was thinking about doing a vinyl wrap myself. I'm just going to do the whole frame in 1 color wrap. How tough would you say that would be?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depending on your patience level, I would say pretty darn tough. If you are perfectionist, forget about it. If you don’t mind seems here and there and some wrinkles here and there, you could do it (will take a long time) but you could. Bikes just have some many angles and little nooks that it makes it very difficult

    U have any videos doing more of the computer/design parts of this? I am currently doing this for our bikes. Also when doing vinyl it is layered so it doesn't have a flat smooth look like a sticker.. do u have a way for doing that?

      Also do u have videos doing a wrap? Or warping an image? Thanks

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, thanks for your question, sorry for the delay. I use vinyl master which is the software that goes with the cutter (US cutter). I think I have the pro version. Unfortunately I do not have any videos of the process of vectoring the image or how to design it. It can be difficult (at least for me) to get the right sizing and spacing and does take some trial and error. As far as the layering. Yes there is layering which can create a look that isn’t for everyone. Some vinyl is thinner than others, but some is thick and can sometimes come up if disturbed. I’ve tried putting a clear vinyl over it to seal it better but due to the layering creates air pockets that doesn’t look right. You may be able to seal it with some clear but haven’t tried and I’d be worried about a permanent seal if I ever wanted to change it. Hope it helps

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! No, not with vinyl. Have tried doing it with some clear protection film but it didn’t turn out so well due to the raised service and it created a lot of air pockets and wasn’t reliable. Ideally you could re-spray it with clear coat but most people aren’t going to be able to do that

  • @effortlessweb9816
    @effortlessweb9816 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video, thanks. I thought that the vinyl could peel up at the edges of the pieces, is this not much of a problem? It seems to move fairly easily when you put it there, so I wasn't sure.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can if it hasn’t stuck properly or if the lettering has a sharp edge it has a higher chance of coming up if you get it dirty or accidentally apply friction to it at certain angles. Some vinyl also is thicker than others and more prone to coming up. I’ve found that usually the glossier stuff stay put while the matte and thicker vinyls that are stiff tend to come up at times. If you are never planning on changing the vinyl you could clear coat over it but that is a more involved process!

      Decorative vinyl isn’t very thick so it will protect from some scratches and rocks. If you want thicker vinyl, 3M and Xpel use a thicker clear vinyl (pretty price) but it will protect against bigger stuff. If the paint has a nice clearcoat over it and you heat it up before pulling, shouldn’t have any issues. Occasionally with matte finishes and raw carbon, it will pull up finish. Good luck

      @BikingRoots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So for the BMC I used a oil slick vinyl that ended up NOT being what I would recommend again. It claimed to be better than it was. The main issue with all the oil slick vinyls are that they don’t have flex in them so they don’t stretch like normal car vinyl. This makes them hard to use on bicycles. In addition, they aren’t resistant to heat. I’d recommend if you want the oil slick effect, going with some 3M color shift vinyl. I’ve had good luck with it.

    The bike is solid and my Ebike conversion went great. th-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Very smooth ride at 30mph with no problems (135 miles ridden so far). The picture is a bit deceiving - there is WAY less space in the center of the frame than it shows. The suspension connection takes up the entire thing. So I needed to attach my battery on the bottom of the frame and my controller on the top. Instructions for assembly were lacking but honestly it wasn't too hard to figure out even though I have very little bike knowledge. Watched some youtube videos on adjusting the disk brakes but that was it. Still, I am loving it and very happy with the purchase.

    Are you using Vinyl or Wrap?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Vinyl wrap. I use car vinyl almost all the time. This one with the oil slick was an experiment with non car vinyl. Much more difficult and didnt want to flex. Probably wont use again, prefer color shift 3m 1080 vinyl

      The jobs in this video were in the $200 price range. Most of that is the amount of time it takes. Smaller decal only jobs can be $40-$100

      Sorry, I showed some of it if you were able to watch the whole video. It ended up being too long so this was more of some idea rather than a step by step how to

    Ruined in my opinion but some stuff is cool but this looked way better with the white stripe up top on the BMC but i just hate that glitter shim colour flip stuff looks cheap n nasty like the stuff for nails

      Ha! Yeah I hear ya and agree. It was what the customer wanted so I did it. Good thing with vinyl is if you get bored or change your mind, just peel it off and back to stock!

    Do you recommend to put a clear protection vinyl over those customised decal (or wordings,…)?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the question. Honestly it depends on the thickness of your base vinyl as well as the clear protection vinyl. I have not had good luck putting clear vinyl over vinyl simply because it is usually thicker than the base vinyl and creates a lot of air bubbles which don’t seem to come out despite my efforts. The best way honestly (if you don’t ever want to change it lol) would be to have a body shop spray a clear over the vinyl to seal it in. If you aren’t sure you want to commit to that, I would just not clear it and deal with the potential of it coming up or needing to be replaced periodically. Good luck!
