- Today on the channel we are going back to the original dragonball fighterz Dragonball z budokai! This game is an all time classic but to be honest I've never played it! Without this game dragonball fighterz wouldn't exist so I thought I owed it to myself to check it out! !

The very first Budokai had the best story mode imo, it almost reenacted all of the major scenes from DBZ up until the cell saga.
They even recreated the opening. It goes crazy
And the voice acting also is simply great,you can heat the passion and effort put here,unlike some other more modern games (honestly,after playing this,kakarot's voice acting was lackluster at best)

Perfect as long as its a cutscene, its so awful that they didnt have unique voice lines during the fight yet.
You gotta respect how good the cutscenes in this game was for it's time, even nowadays it still impresses me how well animated it was
It really was, I'm suprised exactly how well it keeps up.
This game is on the same level as the 3d MK's that came around after this game, which is to say it's really good, not fantastic, but for the time it was the best
This game was so good, and it birthed one of my favorite lines of all time from Cell.

One of my favorite bits is the nervous laugh as he says "this.. Can't be. This is ridiculous!"
Budokai had some great versions of the famous lines from the show, especially Goku's "YOU FOOOOOOOOOOL!"
@@NSignus Cell's voice actor did a pretty good job for a PS2 game, it's a shame they never added his voice for most of the actual in game fights and used first form all the way through.
What's a real trip for me is it was my introduction to a lot of the scenes in the show since I hadn't seen a lot of the episodes yet. So Raditz having an actual hole in his chest with blood was amazing to me as a child, only to be disappointed as an adult with the scribbled black hole from I think Kai?
And I recently watched the Cell saga through again with a friend and I completely forgot it was a kick to the stomach that caused him to throw up 18 because I remembered the game only using the kick to the neck lmao.
@@ChainOfHades I think the reason that Cell's voice stays the same in gameplay is because there was only one voice file for Cell/Cell's voice doesn't change in the original audio.
@@Primekillerboy Oh it's well known that it stays the same because the original Japanese voice for cell stayed the same through all 3 forms, so when they translated everything over, they never added NEW files to give him different voices in English. Absolute shame though, like I said the voice actor in this game did a fantastic job as Pefect Cell, would've been great to hear more.
That Raditz mission to keep him in the lines will go down as one of the hardest missions I’ve completed as a child. It took me over 45 minutes no lie I specifically remember

@@derricksavoie2094 the only time i ever remotely even struggled in budokai is in vanilla b3 where android 18 had the broken ass throw that could start a dragon rush situation. besides that this series was a cakewalk.

These voices were the ones I grew up with. I know a lot of the actors are the same but voices are just so different now. Love seeing this bit of nostalgia again

@@_PuppetMaster86 Vic was hated for unknown reasons by Monica Rial specifically (I saw unknown because she only fed us a lie about Vic sexually harrassing and assaulting her) but when they investigated him they found absolutely nothing because all Monica's stories against him sounded deranged and thus proved him innocent but Funimation still fired him, or rather Christ Sabat fired him since it was bad PR for the company to be associated with someone who had a case against him whether or not it was true therefore making Chris look like an asshole and an idiot for standing with the person who ruined Vic's career in Dragon Ball. The standard company bullshit you know how it is. No justice only "You have something bad said about you? Fuck off."

GameCube version is the best version on Budokai 1. Especially with the cell shading graphics specifically only for GameCube.

This game is a classic. This game is how I first experienced animated dragonball (read the manga as a kid) and it holds up super well. Budokai 2 and 3 might be more solid gameplay but the cinematic element of this game is the most on point

I got Budokai 1 and 2 for Christmas as a kid, I was on Cloud 9 that day!
You gotta do the whole story, it has alternate versions of battles like Piccolo vs Raditz, and even what-if stories that I remember to this day. To charge, you hold guard and double tap and hold the movement button away from your opponent. And during clashes, you rotate the sticks.

My jaw hit the floor as a kid seeing this game for the first time. The cutscenes were so fantastically done and the voice actors were on point! I will NEVER EVER forget the super saiyan transformation in this game. It was like the first time watching the anime all over again, but with one of the best soundtracks and fight transitions.
One of the greats. (I absolutely wanna see more)

I remember getting this on Christmas Eve and playing it from beginning to end before opening presents on Christmas morning. Such nostalgia. The music in this game still hits so hard

This was my first DBZ game and my first experience with the beginning of the game. We've come a long way, tho this will have a special place in my heart. The music and the cutscenes especially
I love Budokai 1 it was the 1st Dragonball game I ever played. So many good memories.
Man this game was THE introduction I had to DBZ. I had read some random chapters in the hardback mangas we had back in kindergarden (imagine my surprise at all the Bulma nudity scenes). I was like 8 when I got this game. I had no idea what they were saying as I didn't even speak English back then. It was truly a unique experience.
Also the final fight kicked my ass for DAYS good god.
Bro the thought of Vegeta pulling out his phone and calling an Uber at the end of the Saiyan saga had me in shambles 😂
Man at this point we're just watching Doto go down memory lane, and I'm all for it!!! Nostalgia at it's finest.
Music in this game is top tier, dont care if its stolen. Also that "ITS OVER FRIEZA" is still one of Sean Schemmels best yells.
@@hisaceinthehole3426 He's playing the original PS2 version since the chest wound on Raditz and Goku from the Special Beam Cannon isn't a black hole with no blood and the soundtrack is unchanged.
Thought it was just Budokai3 with the stolen soundtrack.

If i remember right, if you beat the world tournament on the hardest difficulty, you can choose to unlock the great sayaiman as a "secret" character you can choose when you pick gohan.
It took me literal years to figure that one out because teen gohan was my favorite variant, so i never scrolled past it
Best thing about the 1st budokai was the cut scenes. They tried to make it like a short version of an episode. But definitely finish story mode.
Good lord the memories! This was my first ever DBZ game on the PlayStation and to see the homie Doto doing vids on it brings me immense joy! Hope this becomes the next infinite world through the whole story!
I can’t tell you how much I loved this game as a kid. To this day I still really enjoy the graphic style , and is one of the best DBZ games when it comes to telling the story of DBZ
i remember this game so much. i used to play it as a kid, back when i had a ps1 to play it on. i spent so much time trying to figure out which one it was, when i became older. as soon as i saw the art style and the main menu, plus some of the cutscenes, i instantly remembered, and got so happy. thank you doto, i hope you continue this game.
This game is probably the most nostalgic dbz game for me. The story game was incredible to play as a kid. I still love going back and playing this game, even if the combat is definitely dated lol. So many awesome memories with this game. I'll never forget when the cell vs. Gohan fight. Good luck Doto, you're gonna need it lol.

This game is frustrating in fighting but rewarding in cutscenes absolutely loved growing up with this game
FINALLY! someone went back to the first budokai, THIS game was my childhood. I remember i learned how to transform into a super sayain before anyone else in my house and kept that the tightest kept secret of my life
I remember when my mom bought this game together with my ps2 for my birthday. Didn't have a memory card tho so I remember doing the raditz part like a million times just to show my friends how cool the game was.. and I would to it again. Great memories.
Def do another episode. This games cut scenes go so hard and follow the show so well. Its like we get a Doto speedrun commentary on the show while he fights.
Budokai 1 was my introduction to fighting games, and to Dragon Ball as a whole (as I wasn't allowed to watch the anime) and I think still to this day my favourite Dragon Ball game ever. Just seeing the thumbnail got me excited, so thanks for playing it
I will say the hardest battles for me were SS Goku vs 100% Final form Freiza (cause he has Spirit Ball but can't use it in Super Saiyan) and Gohan vs Perfet Cell (he has the arm reach but Gohan doesn't)
Also ALL the Super Saiyan Goku cutscenes here are FIRE, it's still the best one out of all the other future renditions
I remember playing this on the gamecube, and I could NOT for the life of me get past that vegeta training part Lol.
But now that I look back on this game, it did its job so incredibly well. The cutscenes are amazing, and though the gameplay isn't perfect, it felt like binging another arc of dragon ball all over again.

I remember this being my first dragon ball game I ever played on my GameCube and I still have both and now I’m tempted to go back replay it. Sucks that it only goes to the end of cell games but was one of my favorites imo
Bro when u finish the story mode, you unlock new missions that are "alternate endings" to dbz and they are pretty entertaining for the times this was made.
Also pro tip....use your palm to do the analog rotation.

Out of all the memories I have of this game, from being the first DBZ game with dope cutscenes with 3D models, to that damn Raditz minigame, the one that will always hit the hardest is that MUSIC. Idc about the controversy, they went hard on this soundtrack and I love it to this day!
We need to find the four star ball to wish this into a whole series.
Man, so many good memories with Budokai 1! And I feel you on the Continuous Kamehameha, the fact that they made the regular Kamehameha yellow and not blue bugged the fuuuuuuck outta me as a kid.

Budokai 1 is still one of my favorite DBZ games. So many memories... I actually rented this game, stayed up all night playing it with my dad just to beat the first saga. Then I got the game for Easter. I spent hours using the glitch to unlock capsules lol

Dragon Ball Z Budokai. When I was a kid back in 2002 I desperately wanted this game. I still remember the commercials I saw for it on TV. "First, you must focus. Now, you fight!"
This game holds a special place in my heart just for how many memories I made with it. And even today I find myself going back to all the PS2-games in the Dragon Ball franchise. The in-game transformations combined with the smooth 3D models of the characters were a thing of beauty for me. Especially Android 18 impressed me as a 14 year-old boy. 😅

I feel so old, I was 6 when this came out and I remember playing it not too long after it came out for my 7th birthday. Dang, times going by fast ain't it?:) (Pro tip hold the guard button and press back twice to refill ki energy)
This was the very first game my mom bought me for Christmas along with my PS2 when they first dropped. I've beaten this game countless times and never once was bored with it. Glad to see it getting some love.
This is my Favorite DBZ game of all time, also my first DBZ game ever. Played it on the GameCube for yearsssss even after the newer budokai games and even the budokai tenkaichi games came out. Thank you for showing this masterpiece the love it deserves!

I'm glad you're enjoying the first budokai. This was my first console game ever and to this day, I still enjoy it. It's what inspired me to be a youtuber overall. I highly recommend you learn how to do cancels if you ever want to do advanced combos and to charge ki, you hold the guard button while tapping the back button twice. (Make sure to hold it on the second press though!)

@Dotodoya when transformed, you constantly lose Ki. To charge Ki I think it's hold guard and then double tap and hold away from your opponent. And during a clash, rotate the sticks or mash buttons to beat your opponent.

The first budokai was my first dbz game ever and will forever be my favorite. Especially because of the story mode being so close to the actual show. The music was also legendary even tho it was plagiarized lol. Everything about this game is classic.
Dude, I played the hell outta this game back in the day and it was amazing! As good as it was, the sequels of Budokai 2 and then 3 just felt so damn good because they improved what needed to be improved. Proper, seriously well done sequels. There's reasons why I still have the Budokai series for my ps2 to this day.
I feel the same way about the PS2 Budokai series. I owned Budokai 2 and 3, and borrowed Budokai 1 from a friend.

I loved this game as a kid and it still remains one of my all-time favorite DBZ games, I especially liked some of the little what if battles it has, one in particular is pretty memorable.

The thing i appreciated about budokai 1 is in the cutscenes they actually showed blood and stuff. Overall it was a good game. Definitely a great platform to jump from for the rest of the budokai series. Was my 1st dbz game
Back when we had to be good to unlock characters, move sets, and harder difficulties. Also hitting opponents through the barriers to transition to another stage. Catch a zanku fist to the face on Kami's lookout and end it with a beam struggle on earth in the same fight... 20 years ago sounds further back now that I think about it
I don't remember there being beam struggles in Budokai 1. Stage transitions were neat, though.

They had side character fights. You just had to beat the game once in order to unlock the other fights

BUDOKAI! Doto really be hitting my childhood in the feels today. I remember frustrating so many people while using Mr Satan and combo cancelling for days.
Also does anyone else think during Dynamite Kick that Hercule says "I know how to kick!"
You’ve gotta rotate the control sticks during burst mode to keep pushing the opponent back to win the clash. It’s basically a mini game within the fight.
So many years later and Budokai's Story presentation is still the best of all the DBZ. The studio really went all in in translating the show to the game's story.
I wouldn't say so. Burst Limits is actually a lot better presentation wise.

Man it’s crazy that it’s been over 20 years since this game released, I remember playing this game nonstop in my parents bedroom since they had the bigger TV in there. Budokai is actually what made me start watching the anime more whereas before Budokai, I only occasionally watched Dragon Ball Z but playing Budokai made me realize how good the story of Z was
I will never forget powering through this game, and the shock I had that cell could use the spirit bomb. I don't know if this ever appeared in any other game, or if his claiming of being able to use it is recognized canon.
Oh hell yes let's gooooo this game was *it* for me as a little kid just getting super into DBZ. I saw the ad in Shonen Jump and knew what I NEEDED for Christmas that year.

I’m actually really glad you played the OG Budokai. If this was the HD version for the PS3/360 they blacked out all the “gory and violent” scenes. For instance when Raditz and Goku was hit by the Special Beam Cannon, the hole they suffer would just be in black.
