    Thanks for this video. I just bought a Dell 5378 13" laptop and will upgrade the RAM. I was hoping it would be easy and your video showed me exactly what I needed to know.

    I absolutely love the serviceability of Dell laptops, they always have been good about that. They even have the service manual on their website and they will not void warranty for these type of upgrades. I'm also glad to see that the RAM is not soldered on to the motherboard like other manufacturers have been doing.

    Thanks for the video! I bought a inspiron 13 5000 and will upgrade it to ssd as well. I was just wondering if I have to change something on bios after replacing the hdd to ssd or just turn it on and install windows normally on it with a boottlable pen drive. How did you do it ?
    Thanks again!

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well i just cloned the hard drive and booted normally, if you want to do a fresh install then you might have to change witch drive you want to boot to. If you have already wiped your hard drive or you just want to install the ssd and not worry with cloning then no it should auto recognize that the boot-able flash drive is the only drive it can boot from, once it finishes installing then it should boot normally. Now remember to go to dells website and download the drivers for your machine or some things might not work properly.

    Did your hyperx impact work with your other ram in dual channel?
    Also can the motherboard take a ddr4 2666mhz instead of the current 2400mhz?
    Good video. Found it very helpful before.

    Excellent video Len. I have one DELL 13 5000 2 in 1 from 2015, and tomorrow will change the HD by a SSD. It is just to change it ? Do I need to change anything in my BIOS or it recognize automatically ? Another question: my is one I5 with 8 GB of RAM, DELL people said I can have only 8 GB of RAM, is that true ? or I can upgrade it to 16 / 32 ? Tks man.

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Should be the exactly the same or mostly the same for that laptop to upgrade to a ssd, also i looked that i5 up and it says on intels website that it only supports 16gbs of ram, so unless that laptop just wont allow it 16gb or ram will work great. And when upgrading ram you don't have to change anything in the bios but it did bring me into the bios to tell me that the amount of ram had changed and that was it no extra configuration for the ssd or extra ram.

      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since i have had the laptop 4 months i will now be doing a update video on how ist lasted and how it performs, but the short story is now that with the ram i can open about as many chrome tabs as i wish and its much much faster with the ssd and gets better battery life. I cant use a computer without a ssd anymore and its definitively worth the upgrade.

    Great Video! What about Operating System? Does the OS boot on storage? Would I have to put an OS on the new SSD that I install?

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No you would not have to put a new OS on it, if you check out the video i link i show you how to clone a Hard drive or any drive for that matter and make a clone of it that you then just use the ssd and you don't have to do anything but clone the original drive and then put the ssd in a the turn it on as always. Yes everything runs off your storage dive, there can be only one drive in this laptop so everything including your OS and all your data will be on that ssd.

    Hi Len, just looking to buy the extra Ram. I see that in your specs, above, you say you used Hyperx Fury, but on the Amazon link, it's Hyperx Impact. I'm a novice when it comes to Ram. Is there a difference between Impact and Fury?

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes there is a difference, but the amazon link i put in the description is correct. The hyperx furry is the ram for a desktop computer and the hyperx impact is for laptops, sorry for the confusion but the link is to the correct ram.

    i want to buy this laptop, but i am concern with the screen glare. Do you think the glare that the screen have is too much or is hendleable? Thank you very much, very good review.

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there is screen glare, but if you want a touch screen then that's a trade off all touch screens have. now how bad is the screen glare, really not that bad. I haven't used it outside in direct light, but in my room with the blinds open and the sun coming in as long as i turned the brightness up it wasn't that be, screen glare was still there but not to the point where i thought it was unusable. I use it with my overhead bright lights on and same for indirect sunlight, i just turned the brightness up, its not that screen glare want there but it wasn't that bad and i don't really notice it.

    Great vid bro. I just bought this computer with a 1tb HHD hard drive with the 7th gen i5. Can I replace my current hard drive with a 1or 2tb SSD? If so, what size does it take, 2.5"? Also, do you have to reboot Bio's? Can you do a vid on what to do after the replacement? Thx!

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes you can replace it with a 1tb or 2tb ssd, no you don't have to reset the bios. No all you do is put the drive back in after you have cloned it or you just plan do do a fresh install afterwards but all you do is turn the laptop back on and the bios will detect a change of the boot device and then ask are you sure you want to boot to this device and you hit yes or enter and that's all you have to do.

    Thanks for the great video. If i upgraded the RAM, would I need to reinstall the windows system?

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the system will recognize a change in memory and ask you a question and then it will proceed to boot as usual and then you can open task manager and see how much ram you have. Bu to you will not have to reinstall windows and if it down boot you might wan to check and make sure its in all the way but i've never had that happen before but if you do in fact have a problem re seating the ram will usually fix it but there is a a super small percentage that anything goes wrong if you follow my guide.

  • @Technosquid
    @Technosquid 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Do you get Wi-Fi drops with this? I've heard this happens with the 1x1 cards like the Intel 3165. Luckily it's an easy upgrade to a 2x2 card. The m.2 Wireless-AC versions of the Intel 7260, 7265, 8260, and 8265 range from $8 to $25 in the aftermarket, and they're all functionally equivalent if your router is more than 2 years old. If you have a brand new router you may want to get the 8265 which supports MU-MIMO.

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the information and when doing file transfers you definitely notice how slow the wireless is, it transfers at about 30mbs, so about the equivalent to 300mibs internet or 30% of a gigabit connection. so not the fastest but I've never experienced any dropped connection issues, so that would be a no.

    Hi, I have question about upgrading ssd. After you upgrade the hard drive, do you need to buy a new windows 10 and install the os on your computer? It would cost $90+ for a new windows 10 system. Thank you!

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No the windows license is tied to the computer no the hard drive. But also no if you use a cloning software and i have a video coming out soon on how to clone a hard drive, but it makes a duplicate of the hard drive and then you just put the ssd in the system and nothing changes only the fact that the ssd is about 5x faster. but you dont have to buy another windows lisence.

      yes is still recommend it for a media consumption and productivity with office or web browsing of those sorts, i wouldn't recommend it for any heavy workloads unless you just need it fir something light but any professional application that it needs a lot of power i would not recommend this laptop for. No actual issues with the laptop, with windows some, but none that the laptop itself is at fault for. It loos really nice i use it for school and media consumption and it works great and is build solid but light enough that i carry it in my hand no problem, its just a great laptop for the price and can handle some light gaming if you desire.

      Thanks for your fast answer! I've "liked" it before reading, since the notification poped up when I was busy. Fact is: I'm finding it amazing, but around R$3k (2.5 + ram and ssd), it's among some other great choices, like a Samsung notebook with 940mx dedicated graphics (not that I'm looking for a gaming device, but you never know... gaming "happens" lol), and that's why I've decided to ask you before further thinking on the matter. Well, now that you confirmed that it's a great device, it's going straight to my Excel chart! Thank you again, and be sure that you've gained a subscriber.

    Much thanks for posting. When I first called Dell to inquire if it has two slots they told me it didn't. Before I had seen this I had read conflicting reports online stating that it did have two slots. So I chatted with their sales department online and they told me it does have two slots. I should have just added an 8GB stick to get a total of 12GB like you did, rather than buying two 8GB sticks. It would have saved a bit of money. I wasn't completely aware if you could run two different sizes of RAM though. I'm pairing it with Crucial RAM and likely a Crucial MX300 525GB SSD. Haven't decided for sure which brand of SSD to go with.
    What is with Dell taking so long to ship devices? I just ordered a standard configuration, not a Smart Selection, and it listed the unit as shipping in 7-10 business days. Now that same unit is listed as shipping in 13-17 business days.

    • @lennobles1686

      The Laptop is great and still working perfectly, yes i do, and i barley ever turn it above 40% brightness indoors and a lot of the time i leave it at 0 to 20% brightness, idk the exact screen specs but for me it is more than bright enough, it is a glossy screen so there can be some glare but that's not even a option since all though screen devices are glossy screens.

      You can clone your entire OS and transfer it to your new SSD. Or you can make a Win10 USB stick and boot from the USB to have a fresh install of Windows, but I believe that includes finding and downloading drivers from Dell site.

    Hi Len, great video, I just got the same laptop with the 6th gen i5 and 1TB internal HDD, the Dell customer support says that this laptop only supports 250GB of SSD (I am guessing as always they don't know everything) can you confirm if this model Dell Inspiron 13 5368 supports 512 GB of SSD. I am planning on buying Samsung 850 EVO or PRO 512 GB.
    NOTE: the debate that i5 is not worth the price difference is totally a matter of personal preference, if you just want to surf web and watch movies the i3 is more than enough, but if you want to use it in a professional environment (I'll be using it for graphic design - photoshop, illustrator & after effects) in that case the small performance improvement of i5 is totally worth it as it will speed up workflow.

    • @lennobles1686

      No i cant confirm it but that doesn't sound right at all to me, older motherboards have had a issue with dives over 2tb but theres no way i can imagine that its limited to 250gb, especially on a new laptop.
      Also not that i know the difference and the price for performance is totally based on preference totally based on person preference. The i5 6200u is about 14% faster in cinebench r15 and 17% faster in cinebench r11.5. So yes there is a performance increase, my main point is that this class laptop simply shouldn't be used in a professional environment for there performance in the first place, even the i7 version is only 2 cores and barley makes the 3ghz mark, turbo doesn't count because turbo only engages on 1 core that im aware of. To put this in perspective the i5 6200u scores a 284 in cinebench and a core two quad 6700 scores a 267 a marginal 6 ish percent slower then a current gen i5, only 6% slower and that chip is 9 years old is on a multi core level only 6% slower than the i5. The q6700 is a quad core yes but my point is who would do professional work on a machine that's 9 years old, i hope nobody, so i was simply making the point that for the uses of this laptop its not worth getting it for performance, this is as it states a Ultra book, its basically a notebook and entertainment device. I tried to play a 4k mkv file today with the built in video player in windows, it was so jittery, and i didn't use vlc player because it has a higher overhead than the built in clayer has and it was a full bit rate 70mbps video and yes i have a i3 but the i5 would not have done any better given that my i7 4790k oc to 4.6ghz was running at 50 to 60% load. so my mere reasoning behind recommending not getting the i5 or i7 models is if you need performance there are much better options not only for the price but that also will just playing out out perform all of the cpu models in these laptops without even including any desktop cps in the mix.

      Make sure all the screw are out and start with somewhere that you can get under with a credit card or something of that sort and start from one area and work your way around, there is nothing else under there if you have removed all the screws so you just have to pull it off.

      Neither ssd is anything to write home about in terms of performance but still a big step up from hard drives, they will perform very similar and you would be reluctant to ever see a real difference choosing one over the other. Given that Kingston is a reputable brand i would say either ssd should work great.

    Interesting, i currently own a Dell i5368-1692GRY, it comes with a 1TB hard drive. If I change it to a 250GB hard drive, would that conserve battery life also?

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you mean a ssd then yes if your talking about a regular hard drive then no nothing that you would notice and it might even make it worse since the 250gb drive would be a older drive and could be less efficient. My honest opinion would be that that 250gb drive is a older drive and would less efficient and might make it worse. But if its a ssd then yes it will improve your battery life.

      yes i have the same, it can be lagy if you have lot of programs open or it might be running a security scan, mine came with McAfee security and first thing i did was uninstall it, it makes computers super slow, and opened task manager and went to the startup tab and disabled all the stuff i didn't want to start when the laptop turned on and that helped with boot times and made it more usable when you just turn it on.

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes follow the same procedures as i did, and any ddr4 sodimm ram from amazon will work for this model laptop. If your having speed issues then is might not be ram unless you have looked in task manager to see if your ram is maxed out, it could be the slow hard drive. But if your system is ram limited then any ddr4 sodimm ram, i purchased mine from amazon.

Do you, or anyone else, recommend a website where you can buy one that's not gonna hurt my pocket as much? A 1TB SSD is still pretty darn expensive.

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      unless you want to buy used or you can try bidding you can go with ebay, now there are forums and places like that you can buy from but there are risks involved with that and you can exploit at your own risk, but the place i see good deals when you can catch them are newegg, if you wait and be patient ive seen a 1tb ssd like right around 200 or even lower before if i remember correctly and it was a good brand so if you can wait you might find one there. I also use amazon and you can find some good deals at times on there as well.

    Great video, Len. Thanks a million. I just got mine the other day and it's a bit sluggish. I have the entry level model with i3 and 4gb ram (which is the same as the one shown). When I ordered it, the Dell site said there was only slot. I don't want to open mine until I get the extra Ram as I have sausage fingers and am scared of breaking the lips! So, just to confirm: your i3, 4GB, 500GB 5000 series has two slots? If so, then I reckon I might order a 16 stick and boost the hell out of it. It's a really nice machine, by the way, but the screen res isn't that hot. Good value overall, though. Dave from Dublin.

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes i bought the model with the i3 6100u and 4gb of ram and a 5000gb hard drive. My laptop does have two slots and on intels website for the 6100u, that particular processor can support up to 32gb of ram. I really enjoy my machine too and its really nice but my 1080p screen is gorgeous and has the perfect pixel density and has great colors. I don't know why your laptop doesn't look that good. Yes its a great value for the specs this machine boasts for the type of laptop it is i couldn't find a better value that also performed as well as this one does.

    Hi looking at this laptop and it lists the cheapest version (i3) to have 4gb of single channel ram.
    Can you insert dual channel ?
    Also do you have a link for the ram you bought for it please

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes there is 2 dim slots for ram, yes if the memory is the same then it will run in dual channel, I only purchased 1 8gb stick of ram and i'm using the 4gb stick that came in the laptop also for a total of 12gb of ram.
      this is the link to the 8gb stick of ram i purchased: www.amazon.com/Kingston-Technology-HyperX-2133MHz-HX421S13IB/dp/B014R8JPYW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1472838073&sr=8-1&keywords=8gb+ddr4+sodimm

      Hey, first of all thank you for posting this video.
      Now, regarding RAM memory, in theory isn't it better to have 8 gb (4+4) running in dual channel than having 12gb withouth the benefits of dual channel? Why did you opt for 12gb?

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes its better to be running in dual channel for double the memory speeds, but i needed more than 8gb of ram and didn't want to pay for 16gb of ram, so i bought just a single 8gb stick and the ram as i have it running in single channel.Yes dual channel is better and i plan to put another 8gb sting in eventually but for now its not bothering me.

    Hi, I've got an Inspiron 13" 5378 (kabylake 7200u, 8gb, 256gb ssd)
    Have you experienced any CPU overheating/loud fan noise? At first this seemed to be due to CPU SSD and RAM usages all in the 90's to 100% while updating and installing software. However, this still happens now when browsing the web or anything really. The CPU turbo's up to just under 3.1ghz and rapidly hits 80 degrees c.
    I'd be interested to hear any advice you've got. I've opened up the laptop and had a look around - nothing seems out of place. I'll probably replace the thermal pads on the heat-sink and replace the thermal paste, then replace the fan unit if the problem persists. I don't really want to have to go through an RMA/returns process if I don't have to so any tips to help me debug the problem please let me know!

    • @lennobles1686
      @lennobles1686  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is most likely due to the fact that all dells come with mcaffee antivirus, it seriously kills battery life and slows the laptop down so much and makes them get super hot even when idling and not in use. My laptop does run a bit warm under a gaming load where the cpu and integrated graphics are being used, but other than that no, i uninstalled a lot of the bloatware and especially mcaffee and now it run great, quiet and cool when just using it to browse the web or something not that taxing. These laptops do max out at about 80c or just over and that's hot but still completely safe for a operating temperature but it should never get that hot unless your taxing the machine heavily and not just browsing the web.
      No don't replace thermal pads, if nothing looks missing then just leave it, its something in the operating system causing the cpu to spike to 90 to 100%, i'm betting the antivirus program. Do make sure you do set up windows defender, its already installed on your machine and it doesn't kill your batter or make your system run at 100%, it might ramp up once a week to do a quick scan but that's about it, also another thing that can bring your machine up to about 30% usage is windows installing or updating new updates and sometimes it will last a couple hours just depending on what its doing. Just be smart and don't just download anything off the internet and you'll never get a virus, i have absolutely 0 viruses on my machine and i've had it for about 2 years without a anti virus software running at all times and the reason i don't is i'm careful about what i download and install.

    The screens in Dell 2-in-1 Inspirons tend to be dimmer. Peak brightness is rather dim and won't be usable if you operate say in an outdoor cafe.

      It's designed to fit in the chassis so while it's replaceable, there's no update option
