The Ancient Science Of Karma

  • Karma as a philosophical concept
The word “Karma” is derived from the Sanskrit word karman, meaning “act,” The law of Karma in its different aspects may be regarded as the law of the conservation of moral values. The concept is beautifully described in a stanza of book eight of Light of Asia by Sir Edwin Arnold:
That which ye sow ye reap. See yonder fields!
The sesamum was sesamum, the corn Was corn.
The Silence and the Darkness knew!
So is a man’s fate born
Here the present circumstances of a person are termed as fate. But this fate is not an arbitrary assignment. It is the result of our past actions. Just as a seed grows into a plant, our past actions fructify into our current circumstances which we have to bear and term it as fate. It is neither God’s injustice nor demonic mischief that we face evil. Our suffering is due to our own actions. Further our current actions determine the conditions of the future. Hence we ourselves determine our own destiny. Good begets good and vice versa.
But this philosophical conception has a flaw and is still incomplete. We often see that there is injustice in this world. Very often Corrupt and Powerful get away with serious crimes while innocents suffer. This experiential fact does not sit well with the law of Karma. This is where the metaphysical concept of rebirth comes in.
Karma in Religion- Rebirth and Bondage.
Rebirth is one of the central tenets of Indian religious teachings. It refers to the idea that the soul can begin a new life after the death of its physical body, in another body. The impressions of Karma called samskaras can transfer from one life to the next. Hence, if someone seems to be suffering disproportionately, then it can be explained by their bad deeds in past lives. Similarly if misdeeds of a person remain unaccountable in the present life, one can be sure that Karma will catch up in the next life. Karma is not only the action and its consequences, it is also the force that assigns the fruits of actions to the individuals. Karma is impartial, unbiased and devoid of empathy. It simply acts as a rule follower without any favour or ill will towards its recipients.
During one’s lifetime, one performs actions and accumulates its fruits. These are borne in the next life but again by the virtue of performing actions, the cycle repeats itself. Gautama, the Buddha identified this Vicious cycle and named it samsara chakra which is a form bondage of the self. It is easy to see why. Consider an analogy. You are stuck in a time loop like the 1993 movie Groundhog Day. You wake up every day which can be seen as analogous to being born. You live throughout the day and when you sleep it is equivalent to death. Repeating this cycle everyday without any memory of the previous day would result in an endless monotony. Present day existential philosophers may recognise it as an existential angst-a process without a purpose. In the context of multiple lives lived through rebirth, this despair can intensify to even a greater degree from which even death cannot save. Because of this sense of entrapment, this endless cycle is termed as bondage.

Karma is movement. You are a sailor in an eternal ocean without beginning or end. There are calm parts of the ocean and there are stormy parts. Move where you want to be. Because there is no timeline, only steps through infinity which creates the illusion that you are in a timeline. Everything is now, choose what now to be apart of.

I feel little unjust in the law of karma. Firstly, it's the ego who does wrong in the body with the greed and not the soul which is pure. So imprinting bad deeds done by ego on the soul feels unjust as the innocent soul suffers the consequences of the stupid ego mind.
Secondly, when the soul gets into a new body to pay it's karma the new body has to suffer the consequences of which the new ego never committed in the first place. So the real culprit is the ego of the person who committed the sin for which the soul and new body ego is held responsible. It's all unjust or maybe I am wrong.

I think we remove accountability by holding a belief like that; not that it doesn’t resonate with some truth.
If we’re a soul that incarnates through cycles to grow, learn and evolve, every step has some sort of value to it. It’s the same as the saying You learn more from your failures than your wins and that how you take a loss say more than how you win.
I think as humans you only have your complete experience and separating blame to one part of yourself takes away from your ability to step forward as your complete self, owning your missteps as well as your triumphs.

@@chickenlover657 Hi, sorry for taking so long to respond. I just seen this question. I was speaking about our Dharmic duties. We don't really have any karmic duties except to accept what reactions come our way. Dharma can mean different things for different people, but most people see it as a way to conduct their lives according to their morals and personal values. It's a Sanskrit word that translates closely with righteousness and goodness. Dharmic duties are like roles we've taken on and if we were to walk away from them or not take them seriously, that would go against our Dharmic duties. When Arjuna had to fight his friends, and family in the Gita it was because of his Dharmic duty as a warrior and to the events that he helped to bring about. I hope that I explained this well enough. Thanks. 🙏

Theory of karma is described in many ancient Vedic various scriptures. Human beings are also described as Human Animals. There’s 80-85% portions of human nature is almost similar to animals natural behaviour. Self realisation is concept developed by human after very long spell of time having borne on planet in human form. There have been mystical thinkers have developed their own concept/perception consisting various methods to achieve higher stage of consciousness leading towards self realisation. But root cause is karm. Gita has narrated three types of karmas and its impacts reveal or formulate in form known as Prarabdh which become DNA described as Biological body.

There was no good or bad, pass or fail, win or lose, just action. I'm sure in time that will be corrected for me as well, but I thought it was interesting.

With these 2 principles in place one is ready to approach GOD with a 1 pointed desire to kill the ego & expand one's consciousness by practicing meditation which leads to samadhi.
This is making karma a tool for liberation, accelerating one's spiritual evolutionary trajectory=great inner JOY.

So, prarabdha karma can keep happening because of momentum? Very interesting! So like finding your center, then riding out the prarabdha karma till it settles. Can we be still long enough to let our mud settle and for the water to clear ☯️ 😂 This also reminds me of the principle of rhythm from hermetisicm. Very good video 😁

Karma is born of universal empathy. The connection between all beings. Each of us is a dynamic point of empathic influences in the Karmic ocean. Not devoid of empathy, we are all specks of dust in the waves of Karma. The less directly it can influence us the better.

Modern research on Near Death Experience by Raymond moody, reincarnation memories by Ian Stevenson/Jim trucker and past lives regression by Brian Weiss all independently but coincidentally show that our consciousness survive death, we live many lives and our thoughts and actions matter in the hereafter.
So be kind and helpful to others, be virtuous, meditate and cultivate ourselves to higher spiritual levels. Cheers.

Very good. Paramahansa Yogananda (SRF) explains all.of this very well and how to 'burn up' your karma through Kriya Yoga and his teachings. He also wrote a wonderful interpretation of the Bhagavad Gita amongs many other books. Also YSS in India.

It's beyond my understanding how they can use their pictures and say no word about them whatsoever :(

ATTENTION!!! Where will you go when you die? Hell or Heaven? We can not hide our sins from God. Jesus Christ loves you and He died for our sins. If we repent of our sins and put our faith in Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior we will be saved. MARK 1:15 The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe in the gospel.

    Hi brother. Nice.
But one point to add. You mentioned the innocent suffers and the culprit still enjoys and thats why new birth concept comes.
If we see closer, even if the culprit comes out of the issues because of his power, physically he is freed but not mentally.his mind and memory wont come out and leave . Someone is not giving punishment to culprit does not mean he is happy.
He has to suffer his wrong deeds inside in this life and whatever will be pending will be carried over to next life.

there is a massive connection with desire in karma nowadays human creating a world where many do karmas unknowingly which results in trapping in a loop of reincarnation if you achieve realisation of true-self in this life that is awesome but there is no guarantee in next life. Because your desires will be saved in the unconscious part of your mind which is the result of suppression of desires and ignorance for whole life.
