Kristen- WOW. Girl this is Beautiful! I LOVE using black in a quilt. I think you did an amazing job and I much prefer the colour of the backing you went with. Especially if this is for a kid. I think the mum that gets this is gonna LOVE it! ❤
Great job! It's always great to finish a quilt, but even better when it's a UFO. I'm going to a quilt retreat next weekend and you have inspired me to take some of my UFOs to work on. I have three small quilts basted that wouldn't take me long to machine quilt.
Whenever I make a baby quilt, I use the scraps to make a doll or stuffed animal quilt. I just sew them randomly as the scrap shapes dictate. Your edge trimmings are perfect for that. I love your colorful quilt!
Hi Kristen, I had a silent laugh seeing a 'clone' of myself in most of the things you were doing! I prefer to join the seam on the backing fabric running from left to right when it is loaded onto the longarm. That way the seam goes through the roller only once. If the seam was joined and have it run verticallyie (ie top to bottom) on the longarm machine, then each time the quilt is advanced that particular seam would just keep piling up on itself over and over again. I agree with how you did it. A beautiful quilt indeed. And one down from the UFO list. Thank you very much for sharing.
Kristen, I am so glad you went with your heart and kept in the black. I was one of the people suggesting you take it off to make the quilt smaller; but in the end, it is a gorgeous quilt that anyone would love to have. That orange backing was PERFECT, too. Thank you.
Thank you so much for showing this authentic, real life sewing video. All too often, everything is micro-managed and we don't get to see the false starts, mistakes, etc. It is comforting to see that al of us go wrong sometimes and take shortcuts. More power to your elbow! ❤👍from Somerset
That's how I sew my backing together, sew along the selvages and then cut across the fold and lop off any extra. 😆Had no idea that wasn't the 'right' way to do it! 😯 Congrats on getting it done!
I love how your brain works and you’re not shy about your method of madness- I may be your twin!😊🎉- really like the quilt as you make the block & the fleece backing - Great ideas!! Thank you - kate
That backing was the perfect choice, especially since the orange seemed to be missing from the rainbow. I feel your joy in having something finished. 😊
The binding and the trimmed straight edges made all the difference. I didn't like it when you first showed the unfinished form, but FINISHED )))) it is wonderful )))))
Any backing I don’t have to pattern match is done exactly the way you did it. I like doing it that way because the 2 pieces stay square to the selvages and the right length. It won’t work if the fabric is directional or has a nap, but YOU do YOU! Love love love❤❤❤ this quilt!
I think that turned out so cute and will be enjoyed for many years. Actually I think that black added something to the quilt, you have the most wonderful ideas and really enjoying seeing the many ideas you have. Happy Quilting!
Love the quilt and glad you kept the black. I use the quilt scraps to make patchwork taggy toys with a plastic scrunching sheet in them. So far for my 6 moth old granddaughter she is rarely without the taggy toys as she loves the scrunch. I settled on 140cm square or 55 inches as I can use larger pieces of suitable fabric in the centre or panels with sashing and borders. I’m keeping those that involve white at my house to reduce the washing load.
Love the black with rainbow of colors! Babies LOVE and need the contrast. The wavy lines with little loopdaloops is so cute for the quilting too! The setting triangles is what keeps me from doing on point quilts....they just seem like a huge headache.
That turned out so cute ! On point is pretty easy. I didn't use a pattern either (for my first one) and I cut off the "excess" as well, beats trying to do the "triangle math". I'm on my 4th on point quilt. I like them a lot. You do 1 block ROW (turns into 2 opposite corners) 3 blocks, 5, 7, 9, 11 etc. depending on how big you go. The longest row you only make one of. That will be the middle row. I will recommend a STAY stitch all the way around BEFORE cutting the excess off. It makes a huge difference.
You can do whatever you want when you quilt, no right or wrong way, just like all the stupid rules, enjoy the sew, that's all! ❤ it turned out beautiful
It’s beautiful! I almost always have my backing seam run with the bars as quilt rolls better. Also I just lay batting on back and just over lap a inch or two. I do not sew them together. Just my choice for Frankin batting.
You sound like me - coming back to a project and not knowing where I was at and what the next step is. I did that for years and got tired of all the frustration AND the time spent analyzing that could have been used to actually make progress on the project. I now have a planning sheet for each project. It has all the details I need - name of project, source of inspiration, my plan/goal, date started, etc. Each time I work on it I write down the date, the progress I've made and what the next step will be when I work on it again. I has saved me SO much time and frustration.
Wow! Done in a day! Brava! It looks totally great! I like the black too. I often do my on-point quilts the same way (cutting off the excess) because I know I will use those scraps for something else. But if they are large pieced blocks then I go ahead and do the math to make the set-in triangles.
Kudos on a super fast finish, Kristen! I thought the black was there at the top of the quilt to add some sort of applique - like the baby's name or something. Embellished or plain, the quilt turned out great!
I just finished an on point quilt top & the setting triangles were a pain! Twice I sewed on one of the triangles on the wrong side lol! I loved the finish though! Your top is great! I love your quilting!
I am sure you know this but the setting triangle are added row by row as you are putting the strips together so it is quite easy to use them. However at the spot were you were with the quilt you best choice was to trim them off. By the way you are much better and thrifty quilter than I because I would through those little triangles out after trimming.
Might have done but as I said in the video - when I set myself a deadline to finish things I cut corners and make decisions quickly… I get myself in a headspace where the important thing is finishing rather than making the ‘best’ or ‘correct’ choices. I think often worrying over the ‘best’ way slows me down and causes me to stall on projects. So when I can turn that perfectionist voice off for a bit it usually works out better for me!
That looks fantastic! Well done for getting a UFO finished. I have the problem that I just can't get started on a new quilt!! Lol! I'd love to make one for my son next, but it feels like the majority of my fabrics are too flowery or "feminine". I think I'm just too lazy to really look...
Hi Kristen I love this quilt and I’m going to give it a try, we all need a rainbow 🌈!! Can I ask which iron you’re using and if you’re happy with it, I want a cordless iron but most quilters recommend irons that are for the USA and can’t be used here in the uk . I look forward to all your posts, thank you 🇬🇧!!

I like the idea of a toddler quilt. The size seems more versatile. 💕🥰

Oh fab! Have a great time at your retreat! Sounds fun.

I was told not to do it that way as you could bust the seam if you pull it too tight but honestly I rarely pay attention to that advice!
Nice finish! Beautiful baby quilt that will be loved for many years! ❤
Thanks!
I like the black!
Thanks!
Wonderful finish! I made an on point baby quilt for my second granddaughter the same way. It works!
Thanks!
Kristen, I am so glad you went with your heart and kept in the black. I was one of the people suggesting you take it off to make the quilt smaller; but in the end, it is a gorgeous quilt that anyone would love to have. That orange backing was PERFECT, too. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad I was able to convert you to the black! 😉

Glad you can relate!
That's how I sew my backing together, sew along the selvages and then cut across the fold and lop off any extra. 😆Had no idea that wasn't the 'right' way to do it! 😯 Congrats on getting it done!
There is no right way! I just know my way probably isn’t the most precise 😂. I’m sure you do it better than me! 😀

I find you so relatable! Congratulations on completing this beautiful quilt.
I like your quilting design and would like to see more examples ❤
Thanks so much! 💕
My fabric is in a chest too. I finally have a dowel to place in to hold open. That’s a beautiful quilt.
Yes I need something to hold that bench open 😂
. You can install a hinged brace to keep it open. Places that sell hardware should have them.
Love the orange backing Kristin. Beautiful quilt!!❤
Thanks!

Love the way you are thinking.❤
The quilt has turned out really lovely. It’s better being squared up.
Thanks!
Kudos to you. Turned out great! Love the color placement.
Thanks!
Love the quilt w the black!
Everyone loves a rain bow. Thank you.
This turned out great! ❤ love it.
Love the black with rainbow of colors! Babies LOVE and need the contrast. The wavy lines with little loopdaloops is so cute for the quilting too!
The setting triangles is what keeps me from doing on point quilts....they just seem like a huge headache.
Thanks! Those triangles were what was standing in my way too.
@ScrapFabricLove I'm going to give your method a go! There's so many patterns I'd love to try, and it'll probably make them doable for me.
@bbymks5 good luck with it!
I do enjoy watching you, I like how you use scraps.xx🐝🐝
Thanks so much!
That turned out so cute !

I love it!!! Way to go!!!
Thanks!
I love how your quilt turned out, well done!
Thanks so much!
@@ScrapFabricLove I would love to know what UFO's went off to new homes.
Very pretty! Tfs, Laura ❤
Thanks!
Love the quilt. Do like the blavk with all the other bright colours. Desley🇦🇺

I keep meaning to try that with the batting! On my list of things to do.
I really like this quilt ❤❤❤
Thanks!
It turned out great!
Thanks!
Nice😊 I join my wadding with a fusible webbing no sewing involved works ok for me but I’m not using a long arm just domestic machine
I really like it

Great tip! Doubtful I’ll be come that organized but you make a good case for it 😀
It’s looks beautiful. I prefer plain pattern squares, just my preference. The pattern really works.
Thanks
❤ I like your quilt, nice quilting…………
Thank you!!
I think the black looks good next to those bright colors
Thanks!
P.S - love the black 🎉

Kudos on a super fast finish, Kristen! I thought the black was there at the top of the quilt to add some sort of applique - like the baby's name or something. Embellished or plain, the quilt turned out great!
Nope - don’t know the name yet!

I’ve always shy away from on point but might try this
Cut when you square it. 👍🏻😉
I am sure you know this but the setting triangle are added row by row as you are putting the strips together so it is quite easy to use them. However at the spot were you were with the quilt you best choice was to trim them off. Yes it wasn’t the sewing on to the rows I didn’t want to do it was the math for how many I needed and cutting them all out 😂!
I like the idea of the orange backing. Would piecing vertically work better?

You could put the name on the front in bright letters on the black!

Thanks!! What about asking him to look through your fabrics and pick some things he likes?
@@ScrapFabricLove that would require him to stop playing his guitar or get off his computer long enough...
@dianashanks1309 🤣. Guess he’ll just have to accept whatever you pick then!

It’s a tefal cordless iron. I like it except from the beeping when it’s cooled down. Didn’t know it did that when I bought it! 😂
Ssnip it and rip it !!

Shhh don’t call it hoarding you just haven’t found the perfect project yet😊 Bright fabric is my genre too
