I thought at my age of 64 I thought I would have grown out of Wishbone Ash- but their music is still like sweet custard to my ears, and still will be at 84 years of age.
Finally got to see them live in Houston 2015, it was in a small place and ZZ Top was playing a huge venue about 5 miles away , plus there was a championship boxing title that night so the place wasn't packed at all, but they rocked! After the show they all came out and hung out with people and signing autographs.
Heard Wishbone Ash for the first time back in the 70's. Saw them in Miami Fl in 1976, they were touring Live Dates. They were flawless in their performance. Too me one of the greatest bands ever. Very underated if you ask me.
Wishbone Ash and other bands around at the time made the 70s the best era for music.Listening to the balbums and going to the concerts have left me some very happy memories.Wishbone Ash were one of the many bands that I saw and those memories can never bettered-certainly not with today's music.
The twin - lead guitar playing in this is not only totally, insanely proficient it’s picture perfect. Not a single note is wasted. Every note and drum beat contributes to full effect.
I've lost count of how many times I listen to this song, but you're right, not one single note is wasted. When I started college in '71, it was with an 8-track tape player..lol !
Wishbone Ash were brilliantly unique and I don't believe that this uniqueness will ever be matched by any artist again. Four incredible musicians all in harmony with each other, producing more beauty from their guitars than any other Rock Band of the time; before or after. There is more emotion and more feel from these fabulous guitarists, with beautiful guitar effects almost throughout their 'Live Dates' album and the production is both beautiful and balanced throughout. Martin Turners Bass is imaginative and as unique as Ted Turner and Andy Powell's Guitar's. Wishbone Ash themselves said that their Drummer Steve Upton was as important to them as John Bonham was in Led Zeppelin and he certainly was. This performance of Phoenix is untrue and will always be GREAT and In its own way, this could be Wishbone Ash's 'Stairway to Heaven'.
My school friend used to listen to Sounds of the 70s when she went to sleep at night. She told me about this amazing song called Phoenix. We became hooked on Wishbone Ash. They were at the top of their game in the 70s. Pity about the fall out :(
Saw them in Dallas in early '73 at McFarlin Auditorium at SMU . I remember it like it was yesterday. We had just graduated high school . It was greater than fabulous ! They just didn't get enough play time on the FM radio here. KZEW , " the ZOO with Jon Dillon .
A classic guitar jam , as good as it get , saw this bad with the original lineup twice in St Paul MN , in 74-76. Sweet concerts. 20,000 on there feet , smoke , toke, and other enjoyable substances. Best time of my life. Something I rememberd was they had said that this was the last your will original members, I know they said who was leaving, but it was 45 years ago. Still love this fantastic dual guitar attack. Fabulous
Wonderful, terrific, superb, amazing, awesome, just very very very good. Wishbone Ash forever. I really miss this LP. A good buy. Greetings too to the Wishbone Ash funs out there. Thanks for the upload!
i discovered WA in 80 when i was just 16 old, we were 3/4 friends smoking and stoned while listening WA and others bands. I saw them in 81, 83, 84 in France, Great memories of the good days ! an old french fan
Bird, rise high from the cinders, leave it all behind, All the ruins and the fire. Bird, raise your head from the ashes - many men lay dead. You can see them like I. Phoenix rise, raise your head to the sky.
Kept me sane in little old Ireland in the seventies.Do my best to expose my 16 year old son to the best of the sixties and seventies, like Camel, King Crimson, John Martyn, Horslips , Jethro Tull, Shit i could go on all night.
This is so easily the best version. They should have been as big as Led Zeppelin. The Ash guitar is so special and distinctive, instantly recognisable. The productions and lyrical tracks are brilliant. Argus is one of the best albums ever, awesome. My favourite UK guitar band ever and still brilliant. US, CSNY.
You are so right Tony. Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, bands like that got a lot of recognition back then and rightly so. However, these guys were right up there with the whole bunch. UNDERRATED!!!!! for sure. Their ballads were second to none.
For me , this is THE best song , in it's best recording . From the second part and on , when the rhythm picks up , I can clearly imagine a Phoenix bird flying , gradually being set ablaze and burning down and then , in the third part , "rising up from the cinders" ,as the verse goes , and as the myth describes it ! MANY THANKS FOR POSTING dave sweet !!!
One of the nicest jams of all time . WISHBONE ASH #2 IN MY LIST OF JAM BANDS. I SAW THIS BAND 3-23-2022 CHARLOTTE,N.C. AND THEY WERE STILL GREAT with Andy Powell. #1- whipping post live Allman Brothers Band.
This is the best version ever. I've heard Wishbone Ash first on tapes and loved them ever since. This version is long enough to complete all the motives. It's always nice to listen one of the masters using Les Paul with feeling .
I have this original LP, and played Phoenix all the time. I think the best Ted Turner soloing ever recorded. Great example of what an old Les Paul with PAF pickups sounds like in the hands of a master. thanks for the upload.
Such a great band ! I saw them on their first Australian tour in Sydney 1975 after Laurie Wisefield had replaced Ted Turner. Around the time of "There's The Rub" album. A great concert !
Alright; I just read the last ten years of responses to this "most excellent" bands' performances, and can only explode with emotion of the music that the masters' of music RAvel.
I had the pleasure of being in the audience at Newcastle City Hall when they recorded some (one) of the tracks on this album, just cannot remember which one.
I had a pool party and couldnt drag the stereo out of tha house, so I took tha 8track out of tha car. Afterwards the next hazy morning, someone left a whole box of tapes and this was in there...boy was I glad, tha first thing I did was crank this or maybe grab a beer...nothins changed...this is still great.
Thanks, great live version, I like all their 6 first albums but I think the best studio album is Argus but I like their first live album a little bit more, great band
Wishbone Ash's party piece.... saw them this week ( October 2019) in Exeter UK some 47 years after the Oval cricket ground in 1972 alongside ELP, Focus and a newish band called Genesis, (I wonder what happened to them?)
I got this double LP back in 1974 and discovered this absolutely amazing version of Phoenix. Unbelievably perfect in the execution by the twin guitars of Andy and Ted, not forgetting the rhythm section holding down the fort at the back. This is without doubt one of the best live performances ever. The only other such live performance I could mention is "Lost Woman" by The James Gang Live in Concert.
I thought at my age of 64 I thought I would have grown out of Wishbone Ash- but their music is still like sweet custard to my ears, and still will be at 84 years of age.
Peachtree Toner Oh my one will NEVER do such a ghastly unimaginable thing.
I'll be 64 in August (2019) and still love them

Amazing.... You don't hear music like this these days anymore.
Maybe our parents thought the same!
My favourite band of all time, this double live album is some of the best music I've ever listened to thankyou Wishbone Ash.
The original lineup was indeed the best.

This is what I call a Masterpiece of Rock ... still as fresh as 45 years ago!

It still sounds fantastic. Glad to have this album, highly underrated band.
Upton's introductory drumming is brilliance. Upton is and was always the best drummer of Wishbone Ash music. PERIOD!!!
For all lovers of melodic rock guitar this must be one of the greatest songs ever. Ted is playing incredible. Love it !
I can't say how many times over the past forty-eight years this song has provided hope when there was none anywhere else. Thanks for posting it.
This is the most amazing song that you will neva forget .Jennie in az.
This is the best version of one of my all time favorite songs! From maybe the best 'live' album ever. It just don't get old...

@mags jay Austin Texas- Sept 19th- 2021.
What great guitar tone on the opening! This kind of this is lost to the current musicians...
Takes me back to my youth and life was more simple and less stressful
And music was beautiful
Introduced to W. Ash via The Who ❗ Edwardsville, Ill. 40 ? years ago❗😄

One of the very best live albums from a decade when there were some real beauties. Why this band wasnt monster huge is beyond me?
They were my favorite too for some time. Other than The Beatles of course. Also Yes. I really like Dates 2 from the mark 2 WA .
Two lead guitars, what a great idea!
