I ordered both recently and came to the same conclusion most people are commenting: the R1700BT is a little brighter and my pick for "winner" of the two sound wise. The 1280 still sounds good, boosting the treble a little improves it too, but with everything at 0, the 1700 in an easy win. Vocals and live music sounds much more natural on the 1700. I don't see an issue with not having a sub on either set - there is plenty of bass for most of the people that will probably be buying this speaker. Note that the 1280 has a digital out and cox out, that the 1700 does not. This may factor in some peoples decision as the 1280 will be easier to connect to most TVs via the digital out (i actually found this super annoying, since I then needed to use two separate remotes to control the tv and then the sound).
Aesthetically, it's a hard pick for me. I do like that the 1280s have a flat front as opposed to the 1700s slant. This has to do with where I have the speakers mounted. I like the 1700 cabinet well enough and the build quality is far superior to the 1280, but something about the 1280 color scheme draws me to it more (both were the wood grain versions).
    Hope this helps.

Hi, just wanted to touch more on the idea about controlling the 1280's tone, adding more treble to get close to the 1700 brighter sound. Do you think it's possible to do that and save money and getting more options in terms of outputs as well.

I've watched sooo many video comparisons at this stage and thanks to Digital Stereophony and the user comments I've just ordered the R1700BT for the best overall value/price and sound quality.

Yes, definitely muffled sound in the 1280's, first demo revealed it right the way. 1700's have much clearer and fuller sound.

    • @DikiBolz

Vocals are clearer with 1280 because 1700 is more mid scooped. The other point of view is that 1280 has less pronounced highs which opens up the space for upper mids.

I did a side by side test with these speakers and this is very accurate. The 1280db has slightly deeper bass but the 1700bt is SO much crisper with a much larger sound stage. The 1700bt is better overall, especially for movies as it's much easier to hear dialogue with the clear separation of sounds.

Bought the 1280db at first cuz I was on a budget. Today I got the 1700bt on sale for 110$. Instantly sold the 1280’s to my dad. There is no going back lol. I was so torn apart choosing between 1280t and 1280db at first and eventually went with the db’s just because I’ve got a potent motherboard on my PC which has digital output and I was thinking that’s going to make a difference, but eventually I feel like I made a mistake since the db’s sounded so muffled. Lucky for my dad though is that he needs the BT mode. Now with the 1700bt’s it’s day and night difference and I’m no audiophile by any means I just wanted something decent for my gaming rig in the 100 euro range and I feel like these are unbeatable, they are definitely worth the “entry-level audiophile stereo speakers” tag I have read on various reviews about them.
And of course thank you for these videos. Really helped me finally making a decision.

I'm currently using the R1280DB's, the R1700BT's, the R1850DB's, the R2000DB's, and the S350DB's (2.1 system). In each case, the sound quality go's up a notch or two as you climb the model ladder. In a real world scenario, using great cables, etc., you'll find that although the 1280's are nice (especially for the money), they are a bit boxy sounding on some material. When you jump to the 1700 BT speakers, the sound becomes a bit more open (and yes, just a tad brighter if you want to use that term - but still nicely balanced). I've got several DAC's (that I switch back and forth via a switcher) and you should hear the unbelievable high-end sounds coming out of the R1700BT's whn compared with a DAC like the iFi ZenDAC - just remarkable and breath-taking.
Now if you jump up to the RR1850DB's, you will begin to really notice a difference as the speakers are even more dynamic, have more bass and are even more open - more so than "next step up" R2000DB's. The Edifier line of speakers are surprisingly superb for the money and if you are careful with your other gear and accessories (such as using upgraded RCA cables, a great DAC, upgraded USB cables to connect to a PC for instance, etc., the Edifiers then become audiophile quality transducers to be sure. The only issue I have with the majority of Edifier speakers is that they use these old fashioned PC type of cables to connect the speakers. And the lengths of these cables are ridiculous - I believe they are 15-16' in length. Since many of us these Edifier speakers in a near-field environment by our desktop PC's (or laptops), having that long of a cumbersome PC style of speaker cable is ridiculous. Both the R1700BT's and the R1850DB's use the same type of 4-pin cable. I actually found a vendor on eBay that sells 53" versions of these cables - which comes to around 4.5 feet, which is ideal for a PC setup. Here is the direct link to that cable. I've already ordered 3 sets of these cables - they are quality using belden cable. The link is (just cut in paste if the link doesn't allow you to click on it):
    www.ebay.com/itm/GENUINE-MOLEX-4-Pin-53-High-Quality-Speaker-Cable-for-Edifier-R1700BT-R1850DB/333630116398?epid=1953258580&hash=item4dade7922e:g:JlUAAOSwB4Je7QyY
Only the 1280DB's allow for conventional speaker wire to be used. and I use a better grade 14 gauge variety. On all of the others they use either 4-pin or 5-pin old fashioned DIN cables - which are almost impossible to find anywhere. However, I've managed to crack the code and I've had Blue Jeans Cables map out these cables and they made me some nice audiophile versions of these cables (5-pin) for the R2000DB and they sound wonderful.
    Have a great day!

Upgraded USB cables for better sound? :/

    • @MrBenherrmann
      @MrBenherrmann 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@kamashi85 I am copying this brief article from David Salz from Wirewold. He says it best - better than I could - see below:
Are USB cables really just 1's and 0's traveling down a wire? If not then what? Digital signals are actually square waves that are detected by the receiver when they pass a voltage threshold. Any variation in the shape or timing of these waveforms can cause errors in these signals.
How sending a file of music is different than that of an image to print? It is just data after all. When a file is saved or sent to a printer, the error correction system in the receiving device can ask the sending device to resend the file until it confirms that the file is completely correct.
Streamed music signals do not benefit from this resend function and therefore error correction systems cannot replace missing or corrupted data.
What is happening inside a USB cable that could impact the sound or information being transmitted? The normal losses of cables will round and tilt the signal waveforms, creating data errors that cause audible losses, tonal coloration and distortion. Those losses and colorations can easily be heard when standard USB cables are compared to reference adapters made from USB plug contacts soldered back-to-back. Designing a USB cable for minimal loss and maximum waveform fidelity is the only way to minimize these losses.
Separate power and signal? Computer power supplies are notoriously noisy and that noise can compromise the fidelity of USB audio. Most USB cables do not isolate the noisy power conductor from the signal conductors, so noise can mix with the signal and it can also enter the DAC through the 5 volt USB power conductor. Therefore, the 5 volt conductor needs to be isolated from the signal and filtered of noise or replaced by a separate quiet power source.
Noise? Noise can also be generated from static charge interaction within the cable. This triboelectric noise adds roughness to the signal waveforms. That roughness creates additional timing errors (jitter) in the signal. Reducing this noise enables cables to sound closer to the purity of the reference direct connection.

Hi Berned, sorry for the late reply but i hope you can help me. do you think that the s350db is an upgrade over the R1850DB or even the R2000DB. I'm not a basshead but i want a good par of sepaaker (2.0 or 2.1) for my pc (music, movies and gaming). thanks for the help in advance

    • @MrBenherrmann
      @MrBenherrmann 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@DiogoSotero Well, let's clarify here first. Did you mean comparing just the bookshelf speakers by themselves (without the subwoofer on the 350)?
I think the R1850DB and the R2000DB are superb speakers. Obviously, the R2000DB will give you a bit more bass due to the 5" woofer. It is of "my opinion" that audio quality-wise, both speakers easily beat the 350's. The 350's will obviously go lower because of the added subwoofer. During my tests, the 350's will first impress you - and this could also be psychological due to how gorgeous they look (especially the bookshelf speakers). But on extended listening, you find that the mids and highs are a bit shrill when compared to other Edifier speakers.
Right now I am listening to a pair of R1850 DB's and also connected is the Edifier T5 subwoofer, which is basically the same subwoofer as on the S350 - but with more controls, etc). This combination easily beats the S350's with a much smoother midrange and superb highs. And the lows are handled quite well. I just got finished listening to Aaron Copland's "Fanfare for the Common Man," and the sheer impact was amazing with this setup (1850's and the inexpensive T5 subwoofer).
Now if you don't want to go the subwoofer route, then yes, the R2000DB is an ideal trade-off. It has a nice full (rich) sound and you will be surprised at how much bass that baby pumps out. I can heartily recommend just those speakers alone also.
The sky's the limit here - so many Edifiers to choose from.
      Ben

Thank you very much for your great vids, your channel is fab for music lovers in need of a good comparison between brands. During many times of listening to this video I noticed more and more that individual instruments on te 1280DB have much more character than on the 1700BT. This is very noticable during the classical music, the cello sounds full and warm. Accoustic guitar sounds very natural, so do piano notes. At first glance the 1700BT speakers seem more open, but the sound is (imho) 'tuned to please' with way to much high frequencies, no natural sound, mainly bass and highs. So last week I decided to buy the R1280DB and all I can say is: wow! After 4 days of breaking in they sound amazing. One of my test CD's is by the Crash Test Dummies (album 'God Shuffled His Feet' with MMM x3 etc) and I hear all kinds of new little effects, riffs and individual background singers. I am very, VERY happy I bought the R1280DB speakers, they are a marvel. The bass is full and punchy, but not overpowering the mids and highs. You still hear melody in bass lines. They sound bright, warm, never tiring and very natural. I'd buy them again, and again. I'm hooked. Greetings from Holland!

Okay, so nobody ( as far as 10 comments down) thought about the tone controls of both speakers. So, I was wondering, would the R1280's be a better option because of the output options by tweaking the treble to achieve close to clarity sounds of the R1700? I mean, the bass and treble controls are there for a reason right?
Judging from the comments below, some people prefer the crispness of the 1700 and some people find it harsh. So, wouldn't the R1280 be the best overall if you could just tweak the treble to match the 1700's?

1280 is warmer, 1700 is neutral. The 1700 hit the high notes a lot more confidently while the 1280 were recessed. Both were great but definitely prefer the 1700. The R1280T sounds exactly as R1700BT ( good for rock music ) BUT THE 1700 has more power! R1280DB is kinda flat just like his big brother thE S2000 PRO ( good for acoustic music folk songs and oldies like beatles ) BUT THESE LITTLE DIFFERENCES CAN BE ADJUSTED BY THE TREB AND BASS TO SOUND EXACTLY THE SAME, YOU CANT GO WRONG ANY ONE OF THESE JUST PICK YOUR NEED IN TERMS OF POWER... im currently using the th S2000 Pro and sounds amazing, i test both A200 airpulse and S2000 pro, money wise i got the S2000, ok so i figured out that the edifier has 2 different settings, which and which? Hehehe its color coding, the black or dark in color is always in V setting and the light color like the R1280DB is the normal setting ( flat ), but again you can always change ur equalizers to sound exactly one of them because Edifier have this signature sound within their speakers including headphones, jeez try the new ANC headphone from Edifier it will blow your mind. Ok so there you go i hope it helps a lot of viewers...

Just opened and setup the R1700BT. Bought on sale for $134 AUD. My review is 3.5 stars. Good sound but the Treble control doesn't do much, and mine is not properly aligned (the groove at 12 o'clock is at 1 o'clock on mine; the Bass knob is fine). The speakers have a nice weight and feel like decent quality, except the wood effect feels a bit fake. I would recommend a minimum 5" driver (R2000DB maybe) for anything bigger than a bedroom. I got the Mackie CR5X on sale for the lounge room after my KRK 6" became faulty.

Seems all these guys fail to take one thing into an account, and that's that both these speaker systems come equipped with (easily reachable) equilizers on them for both bass and treble. Yes, out of the box 1700 sounds better, but what can you do with it? It lacks mid-range, and treble is already there, kicking ass and balls, you can only turn it down a notch, and that's a stupid thing to do. Its sound is already as good as it gets, with only minor bass adjustments, according to individual preference. And its high range does that slightly annoying hissing noise that i assume would only get louder if you turn up the treble. On the other hand, while in full balance 1280DB sounds kinda weak, its sound is fully in balance, mids, lows, highs. Which makes it perfect to adjust with equilizers! And mids are simply there as is! Unlike on 1700! You can't correct the lack of mid-range on bass and treble equilizers! Shit, if i always kept my old ATP3 equilizer on zero they would be mediocre AF. Don't underestimate the power of good treble/bass adjustments. Although, i do think that the spectrum of sound is still slightly going to be narrow compared to 1700, even with some fine-tuning. I would still have to test them myself, but i'm pretty sure that with some minor work on the sound spectrum 1280DB could kick ass of both 1280T and 1700BT.

1700 sounds like it has boosted bass and highs, and lacks in the mids. That's where the 1280 is better I think. A few tweaks on the treble and bass knob on the 1280 might do the trick, might sound even better than the 1700.

But when I listen to it on my phones the 1700 has a lot of treble, almost hurting the ears and it lacks medium when it comes to the electric guitar parts, snares, brass on the jazz. while the 1280 that sounded muffled now sound good becausa it has everything that 1700 lacks in medium

My solution is to buy both so I get the best of both worlds! But its cleat that the 1700 is miles and miles better on the top end and mids are less muddy but the bass on the 1280 can not be denied. I think 1700s lack bass, which is incorrectable ... 1280s lack mids, which is easy correctable. So 1280 for allaround, or 1700/1800 for bigger space (like over 20sq. meters). Coz where I live 1700s are 30% pricey, and they are definitely not 30% better, even with that much power in them.
