I live in a part of Phoenix famous for it's mid-century style. Super easy to find old furniture by the curb for free. I love it. I walk 2 hours a day and often find things for free. Dressers from 1930's & 40's are common. I find so many I break them down and use the wood to build built-ins and other things. Currently making cabinets for my kitchen remodel all from salvaged material. Chairs, couches, entertainment units, toilets, sinks are all very common. We have city bulk pick up 4x a year and plenty of great items to be found. I garden and many of my plants were found curbside. Garden hoses, all I want. Great fun treasure hunting.

My parents were both 82 when my mom passed away. A year later my dad sold his big house and moved into a cute 2 bedroom. He lived there for 2 years and now at age 90 he divides his time between me and my family in Kentucky and my brother and his family in Green Bay Wi. Everything in my parents house were original to the build in 1967 ! My dad also has shirts from the 70’s and 80’s that he still wears. He’s the same size he’s always been. 170 pounds at 6’1 “. He walks a lot and eats super healthy. Just got his blood work back and it’s perfect ! 😊
My dad bought a bedroom set (headboard, night stand, chest, and double dresser with mirror) when he retired in 1967 from a very good furniture store. When he died, my sister moved the set to her home and has had it ever since. It still looks exactly as it did the day he bought it. 56 years old! Quality counts.
Unfortunately, so many household items aren't made using quality supplies and those things necessary for the product to last an extended period of time! My mother saved and bought me a Bassett canopy bed when I was 5. Now I'm 65, and it's still in great shape!

When I was 19, I found a dresser in the vacant apartment next to mine and took it in. Turns out, it was a high quality, solid wood dresser build in 1964. I’ve moved more times than I can count since then-and that thing weighs a ton-but 20 years later, I’m still using and loving it every day.

Great video, Dawn! Makes me homesick for my daddy. He passed 3 years ago this coming May. I miss him so much. He was a lot like your dad. Super frugal, super handy and saved everything. Yes, I couldn't agree more. Such a lovely home, well cared for and love Dawn's Dad resourcefulness and intelligence to handle so many projects on his own. VALUE, definitely a key word for me. What a great way to make a decision about a purchase or project that needs to be done. Loved this video too!
Many of my childhood friends parents bought. one home, added an extra bedroom & T V Room. They all remained there until they passed. They travelled the world and lived simply.
I gave up cable a few years ago and don't miss it. I used to love to watch the ID channel and HGTV, but there are so many things on youtube. I find that the older you get, the less you care about having the nicest, latest trends. You just want to be happy, content, and live peacefully without debt.
I didn't think I could live without cable but tried cutting the cord 8 years ago. I was shocked I didn't actually miss it. In fact I became more active and had more time to do things I liked a lot more. Cable was actually kind of stressful. There was a lot of "news" and things that were entertaining but stressful. Like looking at a car wreck. Can't not look, but not nice to see. I think not having it improved my life. I looked for other things and even people to remove from my life if they were really making me happier. Surprised how many things I didn't need and was better off without.
When you take care of your things they last forever. He's things aren't old, they're " very vintage" 😊 Your Dad is a very wise man. The apple didn't fall far from the tree. Thank you so much for sharing that with us ! ❤️
As a retired CPA, I want to thank you for this video and commend your father's wonderful, non-wasteful lifestyle. His life is materially rich and his home, auto, etc. are very nice! This truly gives hope to those on limited incomes. HOWEVER, you are apparently not considering the "non-monthlies," such as property taxes, an occasional medical/dental bill not covered by insurance, occasional need for a new roof, furnace, appliance, repairs he can't do himself, etc. These can easily, over time, double his yearly expenditures. Folks planning retirement need to consider this.
It's become a very greedy world! Your dad is lucky he can do his own home repairs and remodeling. The way he lives, makes me think of Prepper Princess 😄 I am still using my dressers I bought when I started working at age 16 while I still lived at home with my parents, many moons ago. That's a nice neighborhood and nice home. Look at that pic of you! What a cutie! Thanks for the tour.
Your father has a beautiful house! Dawn, you kept repeating over & over how old everything is. There’s nothing wrong with that. Your dad is in his 80s, I wouldn’t expect anything less. I actually really liked the bedroom set in the room you were staying in. My husband is also a diy’er, & has done everything in our house all these years. I’m very fortunate that he is so handy & has saved us so much money.
You're right about your husband. My husband's the same way. It does become dangerous. My husband is 74 and climbed on the roof to remove a limb from a live oak tree. He engineered ropes so it wouldn't crash down on the roof. I had my finger on 911 the whole time, lol. If your husband's like mine, you have many exciting experiences in store!
I like your Dad. I am frugal also but have never been capable of home repairs usually. Some minor tasks I can do. He sounds sharp in mind and physically fit. Much respect!!

I love your father's home. It is beautiful! I love his furniture also, back then, the furniture was made to last, not like the laminated particle board crap they make now. When he retired, he should have started giving classes in do it yourself classes. Beautiful pictures, he sure knows how to decorate well!
I LOVE all that nice wooden furniture and your dad's decor! I'd give anything to have my grandparents' furniture from years ago. Vintage everything is very popular, and the resellers would love to have what your dad owns, lol. Your dad reminds me of my mom's father. He stayed slim and trim, ate healthy, and when I was a kid, I remember watching him dive off the diving board at a swim club he and Grandma had joined years ago. Unfortunately, however, he was a lifelong smoker but managed to live to 78, when he died from a heart attack. He loved his Banlon shirts and Goldtoe socks and had every color, lol. Your dad's place looks so nice and the neighborhood so neat, no grass, lol. I'm always fascinated by states like Arizona and no grass to mow, what with my living in Ohio and all the greenery that needs constant upkeep in the summer. Thanks much for giving me another good memory of my childhood years in the 60s.
Your dads a smart man. I think we could all take lessons from him. So many people waste money on things they don’t need. I’m guilty of that too. He really has taken good care of his things.
I still mow my lawn, fertilize, and pick up leaves every fall; there's an expense but my lawn mower is 23 yrs old and only pull cord and cable replaced in those yrs. Your dad gives me inspiration at my 70 yrs. I do have internet and enjoy studying history so I get my money's worth having internet but got rid of cable tv 8 yrs ago. Cheers.
I can see for sure that the furniture is very old. That's good because it's sturdy and if it doesn't need to be replaced, it shouldn't be. Your Dad has a nice home. I wish him well.
I'm happy he saves. It's good that he has solar. He saves fhe planet resources....My respect to him Dawn. And to you since he saves alot of his MOLLA!! 😊😊😊
Hi Dawn! Thanks for the tour of your dad's place. Your dad is a very intelligent as well as wise man. He's learned over his lifetime to be content with what he has...just because a person can afford something doesn't mean it's a wise decision to purchase it. By eating smaller meals, your dad is reaping a two-fold benefit...keeping physically fit as well as making possibly 2 meals from what might have been one, thus saving yet being able to go out to eat. Nice video, thanks for sharing!
I really admire people who tackle tasks like laying tile and other home repair and renovation projects. It is indeed a great way to save money! I, unfortunately, am not "handy," but I do what I can to help keep our home in good repair. Kudos to your Dad!
It's not hard to live this frugal, I do it. I do it almost the same way as him, but updated my wardrobe over 2 yrs back in 2016. It's all about not over spending, and not living beyond your means. Understanding wants vs needs. My vehicle is also from 2016 , just hit 38 k miles mostly traveling 10 to 16 hours to see family every year. I can afford to fly but who wants that hassle. Plus I check out different towns every year during my travels. Cant do that on a plane. I love the freedom of retirement and taking care of my home, and yard, coming and going when I please. He doesnt sound frugal just sounds aware of finances. At 86 great he can still take care of most things by himself.
If I wasn’t with my husband this what his home would look like. We’re in our 50’s. Hahaha! You’re dad is 100% spot on! And oh yes what a cutie in that military photo. Much love to you and your family.
Your channel popped up on my feed tonight. I can appreciate your dad as I am the same way. I will be 79 in April. I am still living in the first home we purchased in 1971. It is furnished almost completely with furniture from my grandparents and parents. The walnut dining room table, hutch, and buffet has to be at least 100 years old. Two cherry bedroom sets and the maple living room furniture belonged to my grandparents from the 1940s. An oak bedroom set which has a chifforobe was bought in 1942 when my parents were married. I still have a cashmere coat with a mink collar that my parents gave me when I graduated from HS. There are clothes in my closet that I have worn for at least 20 years. I do have Internet, cable, cell phone and landline and spend money to travel. I grow a lot of my food and still do most of the work myself around the house and yard. Thanks for the video. It is good to know that there are people out there that appreciate the simpler things in life and aren't sucked into the consumerism.
my hubby has shirt that were my father's and my Dad pass away in 1900. Were 78 and 80 we find as we age are wants are very small meals simple we hardly go out to eat why because we don't like the food. lol if we need things we have enough money but our wants and needs are just not desirable . I and my hubby love giving our family things while we a live to see them enjoy them too. Now they never ask for a thing My grandson at 23 just bought his first house I ask him what he wanted and he nothing. His Mom is getting him kitchen aid mixer he love making and eating home made pasta so he doesn't know it but I am getting all the attachment for this mixer it will last him a life time and maybe after were gone he'll will smile as he makes his pasta and think of his Nana and papa who love him.
your dad is all the better for eating smaller portions of food , as long as it is well rounded and healthy and he is not skimping on nutrition.... most of us should be like him on that one.
First time watching! We really enjoyed this video and the lighting was just fine. We would have loved if you did a little interview with your father. The first thing I thought was, "this man was in the military", then you showed his picture 😊 One way we've saved a ton of money is we cook every meal at home. We went plant based almost 11 years ago and you wouldn't believe how much we've saved not purchasing dairy, meat, and processed foods. We also shop at Aldi. We eat brown rice, vegetables, fruit, beans, and lots of sweet potatoes. Eating this way has kept us out of doctor's offices and we take 0 medications which also saves a lot of money. It's not for everyone but we want to feel good, save money, and our health is more important to us than anything else. Thank you for sharing this video. Nice job ❤❤❤
Great guy looking after himself and not feeling he has to keep pace with the world’s crazy consumerism, just hope he has some fun with his money and isn’t just squirrelling it away for someone else to spend.
Your dad keeps the place really neat and clean! Ok that the furniture is old. No tv sound actually. My closets should be like his. I think you’ve just inspired me to give away more things I don’t need. Thanks. 😊
Older towels are so durable and well-made; keep them and buy them if they are reasonable at any yard or estate sale. The new ones don't last very long.
I’m gonna say that old furniture is 100 times better than the new crap that falls apart. I would love to have some of that old furniture.

I'm always fascinated by states like Arizona and no grass to mow, what with my living in Ohio and all the greenery that needs constant upkeep in the summer. Thanks much for giving me another good memory of my childhood years in the 60s.
I’m willing to bet your dad bought good quality well made items. Especially his clothes to last that long.
God Bless your Dad - I'm contemplating proposing ~~~
Your dads a smart man. I think we could all take lessons from him. So many people waste money on things they don’t need. I’m guilty of that too. He really has taken good care of his things.
Thank you
Admire your dad, a lot to be learned from him.
Cheers.
That is awesome!
I wish many healthy years ahead young man !
Thanks for sharing this! You come by your frugality naturally. So do I. And our parents thought we weren’t paying attention!
Love that!
I can see for sure that the furniture is very old. That's good because it's sturdy and if it doesn't need to be replaced, it shouldn't be. Your Dad has a nice home. I wish him well.
Thank you
I love his home!! Love the furniture!! Furniture are hardly made of real wood anymore!! I love ❤️ the way he lives!! So neat & organized!! 🤗🦋
Me too!!
He has a nice home and even though things are old they are in very good shape. You are so lucky to still have him.
Your father is a very wise man. I agree with him 💯%
I'm happy he saves. It's good that he has solar. He saves fhe planet resources....My respect to him Dawn. And to you since he saves alot of his MOLLA!! 😊😊😊
Thank you love
Your father is a jewel ❤ thanks for sharing.
😊 thank you
I love the way your Father lives❣️🤩😍
I like your dad's mindset when it comes to money
I really admire people who tackle tasks like laying tile and other home repair and renovation projects. It is indeed a great way to save money! I, unfortunately, am not "handy," but I do what I can to help keep our home in good repair. Kudos to your Dad!
Totally agree!
Dawn, thanks for sharing your dad’s home and his wisdom in saving money. What a brilliant and disciplined man! So much to learn from him.
Love to see the cross on the wall!!! His priorities are RIGHT.
Everything looks nice. You can tell the owner has pride in his home as it is clean and well cared for. What an inspiration!
As we get older we eat so much less i am 63. I admire him, from England ❤ Who cares how old clothes are, if he still fits them 👏👏👏👏 Get over yourself.
Your dad is awesome ! I can see how you are like him. ❤
I like your dad's mindset. His furniture is lovely and he's neat and tidy. I love his old fashioned ways.
You are so sweet
Welcome aboard my friend
my hubby has shirt that were my father's and my Dad pass away in 1900.
How sweet of you
(Here via the sidebar or whatever.)
Your father's house is beautiful! I hope he has many more healthy, good years.
Thank you so much
They don't make them like your Dad anymore. ❤
I agree
your dad is all the better for eating smaller portions of food , as long as it is well rounded and healthy and he is not skimping on nutrition.... most of us should be like him on that one.
What a smart clever man .Great frugal dad 👨. Bless him 🙏. We should all learn from him .Old is gold ❤🎉❤❤❤
Thank you
I think its a beautiful home,Dawn with lovely furnishings! He certainly is a very wise man!
Thank you
Aww, I would love to have seen you interview your sweet dad.
Me too 😊
He's a wise man!
Your dad's house looks great! How nice that he is handy. That in itself saves a ton of $$. Love how he takes care of things too.
Your dad keeps the place really neat and clean! Ok that the furniture is old. No tv sound actually. My closets should be like his. I think you’ve just inspired me to give away more things I don’t need. Thanks. 😊
Your dad's house is very neat and clean. The old furniture is awesome 🌻
I think so too!
Older towels are so durable and well-made; keep them and buy them if they are reasonable at any yard or estate sale. The new ones don't last very long.
Your dad is soooooo smart and wise.
Thank you
