    I've just come from another video that attempted to explain crossing shots. The guy obviously knew what he was talking about but the explanation was dense. This tutorial on the other hand simply and succinctly explains the technique that Ben employs. Thanks for the video.

    The "let the clay beat the gun and then accelerate through it" that Ben talks about has really worked for me on the birds this season because it guarantees barrel speed and follow through, for me. Totally different way of working and I really like it.

    I really like these videos. I've shot a lot of skeet but recently started sporting. Ben's coaching is spot on in my opinion, and definitely seems to be helping my scores.

    Been trying this today and I must say I’m still missing most crosser shots. I think I tried everything but something still very off. Starting to think a shotkam might be a good investment.

    For someone like myself who is new to the sport of clay pigeon shooting, and is still learning about the basics.
    Apart from the obvious being taking/booking in lessons, what would be your advice on allowing enough lead of "Game" style clays.

    Great video but far better to teach maintained lead for a new person - the variation of targets produces different speeds of swing. So when you mount on the target you have to change your method/speed of swing to hit the bird. Agree with everything except mount on the bird and pull away. But everyone to their own! You are a fantastic shooter Ben - and a lovely guy.

    Looking at the other videos of this very interesting series I learned about the concept of the "bajonet mount"
    As I understand the theory of Mr Husthwaite's concept his technique is based on a mount to a predetermined insertion point about half way between "viewpoint" and "killpoint" without any ! sideways movement. In his theory he requires a
    solid mount on the flightline with the head on the stock and the eyes on the target before any sideways swing is allowed to start. Right ? If I watch the the footage of the shotcam videos i beleive that he starts turning with the clay and inserts
    to the flightline and at the clay with an already sideways moving gun. To my understanding this is what he calls a "sliding mount" and this is to my experience the most effortless and smoothest way of getting in sync with the target as it has a few distinct advantages:
    - smoother insertion
    - target speed and gun speed are matched long before the gun comes into play
    - less visible target speed as gun and target merge into another
    - more time for the gunmount as I mount and swing at the same time therefore i am either on the line of the target faster
    or if i use the saved time wisly my gunmount (the No 1 reason for many misses) can be more precise.
    - If the gun is already in motion at about the equal speed when it meets the target along the flight line it is a smoother start with the target
    - when the gun comes into the face of the shooter while the gun is already on line and at equal speed than the biggest advantage is that "rib time" is greatly reduced. With "rib time" I describe the amount of time a shooter spends looking along or in this case sideways past the rib at the target without looking at the bead or rib to start measuring leads and causing the gun to stop or slow down during the swing.
    - to my experience the concept of the "bajonet mount" is interesting. Mr Hustwhaites international sucess proves it works for him and many of his students. Theoretically I have either not understood it good enough or I am still not conviced and practically I see many of my own student that stuggle to apply it this with sucess.
    I would like to discuss that professionally if possible
    To conclude I would like to bring up this little provocant comparison which might not be right ?
    If we drive into traffic of a motorway/highway it proofed useful to have an acceleration lane to ease merging into traffic. This is the "slide into traffic" approach inspired by John Bidwell´s Move Mount and Shoot.
    The Husthwaite "bajonet style" of merging into highway/Motorway traffic would be a stop sign at the end of the acceleration lane to stop and wait for the one gap in traffic moving towards you to jumpstart your vehicle into the gap.
    What would your rather do ?

      Hendrik Strothmann mate for the life of me I cannot strict bajonet mount on anything....always some degree of starting off the move with my shooting I think.
      Having said that, this concept has helped me smooth out and speed up my pull away. Tendency to get too careful if I dont have a strict mount point.

      @jdouglasj2000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hendrik, I do not understand why he uses a bayonet mount in this video and a sliding mount in other videos. Do you?
      Second, do you understand why he’s advising us to hold our movement on top of the bird in this video, but advises to let the bird pass us in other videos?

  • @jdouglasj2000
    @jdouglasj2000 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Two questions:
    1. He explains the bayonet mount, but he does not describe the circumstances under which he recommends using it. Under what circumstances do you use it? (I saw another crosser video where he did not use it)
    2. In another crosser video, Ben recommends letting the target pass you at the viewpoint and then catching up and passing the target with your lead. In this video, he’s advising that we don’t let the target pass us, but rather start the movement on top of it. Why does he advise to stay on the target in this video?

      My reading of it is the clay is slowing quickly due to the distance from the trap,using the" letting the target beat the gun "would mean to much gunspeed meaning missing in front?

    • @JHOLE21
      @JHOLE21 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this was quite awhile ago but every single clay station you're going to use a slightly different method. There is no "you must do this 100 percent of the time" technique.

    Any chance you can talk about cartridges Ben..? I see at the start of this video you are using 8's and not 7.5's can you kindly explain the reason? I would have thought 7.5's better as its a bigger shot size and thus better for longer range clays as it retains energy better.....Id like to hear your views on cartridges....Thanks..

    • @pbgd3
      @pbgd3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      not Ben but I strongly suggest you do some pattern board work with your gun and your chokes.
      Extreme example but I shoot 28 gauge a good bit and I load 8.5 shot. At 40 yards the pattern density is low enough that 7.5s even being larger and holding more energy start to have holes in the pattern that are unacceptable. Does you no good to have a big shot if the bird slips through untouched. Ironically I carry about 10 7.5 shells when I shoot 28 because of the rabbits and during summer our trap setter is sometimes evil and will sometimes have clays going through enough cover that I like to have a bit heavier shot.
      Now granted a 12 has a lot more pellets but clays still break with those 8.5s at 40 yards.

    Why not maintained lead, Ben? Tracking the bird and pulling infront requires the body to accelerate. Maintained lead, there is no acceleration. For me its much easier.

    • @michaelhigbee4151
      @michaelhigbee4151 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cycgnr I personally had a really difficult time switching from maintained lead which I had used in the four years that I’d been shooting, to a tag and lead. It just gives you a better sense of the speed and line of the bird. I’ve seen my scores improve more in the last year and a half using tag and lead than the previous four using maintained.

    Hi Ben I see the lead and my barrel with one eye shut should i do this, im right handed and right master eye but see the barrel / clay picture better with the left closed when shooting pull away .Should i do this or strive to shoot both open .My left eye is actually really bad visually but i tend not to see my barrel very good with both open ????? Thanks Stewart
